To be accountable for defining and ensuring that agreed professional standards are reflected in practice within the day therapy services. To be accountable for the overall management of day therapy, recruitment, deployment and supervision of staff and volunteers ensuring the co-ordination of all services provided to the patients. Optimise the cost effective use of all resources including monitoring the day therapy budget. To promote an environment conducive to the training needs of staff and volunteers and participate in teaching. To provide professional leadership. Key Relationships Accountabilities (Duties & Responsibilities) Clinical Work with the multidisciplinary team to provide a high standard of specialist palliative care to patients and their carers within the day therapy setting. To hold clinical responsibility for the development and maintenance of a problem solving approach to the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for all patients. To act as a specialist resource for patients, carers, staff, volunteers and nonspecialist groups of staff. To be responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of agreed clinical policies and procedures. To ensure that review and regular update is undertaken in line with the changing and developing service within Marie Curie and nationally. Foster a sensitive and caring environment for patients, carers, staff and volunteers leading the day therapy teams by example and professionalism. To maintain/develop clinical skills through regular direct clinical input. 1 June 2011 Managerial To manage the day therapy services ensuring the effective deployment of staff, allied health professionals, complementary therapists and volunteers to meet care needs. This will include overseeing duty rotas, anticipating problems and, where they exist, and taking appropriate action. Develop and project manage new service interventions/ activities to meet the needs of patients and carers Participate in the management ‘on-call’ rota for the Hospice. Participate in the Hospice’s Personal Performance Review and Development programme undertaking PPRDs with team members and assisting them to formulate their Personal Development Plans, as well as ensuring appropriate system for reviews of all team members including volunteers. Ensure all activities are consistent with Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Hospice’s policies. Be responsible for the recruitment, selection and management of nursing staff, allied health professionals and volunteers for day therapy services. Undertake management of sickness, absence and performance issues, reporting to the Hospice Manager. As a member of the Operational Management Team participate in the development and implementation of the Annual Business Plan. Be responsible for infection control within the day therapy service. Manage day therapy stocks and staffing within identified resources and contribute to budget planning for the day therapy service. Communication Develop and maintain robust systems to ensure effective communication between patients, carers, nursing staff, allied health professionals, volunteers, the wider multi-professional team, community and hospital teams and other primary care services. Co-ordinate referrals to day therapy services ensuring effective and efficient admission of patients, liaising with referrers and the hospice clinical team. Participate in or lead with senior medical staff the weekly MDT meetings, ensuring effective patient management including timely discharge. In co-operation with the Hospice Manager and other senior colleagues, develop systems to support user feedback. Ensure effective record keeping and documentation. Promote an open and honest culture which reflects a ‘can do’ attitude. Clinical Governance Play a key role in Marie Curie Clinical Governance Programme, participating in, and supporting research and audit both within the Hospice, regionally and nationally. Actively encourage and participate in the Clinical Supervision process. Develop research based practice and lead practice development activities. Develop clinical protocols to facilitate practice developments, benchmarking where possible, to ensure that the Hospice adheres to best know practice and makes optimum use of resources to achieve the highest standards of care and service. Maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, staff and volunteers, ensuring that staff and volunteers are aware of their responsibility in relation to health and safety, and cleanliness. 2 June 2011 Investigate all accidents, untoward incidents and complaints relating to the Day Therapy Unit reporting to the Hospice Manager and ensure that appropriate action is taken in accordance with agreed policies and procedures. Take an active role in quality assurance initiatives and implementing resulting action plans. Professional Development and Education Working closely with the senior clinical team, promote an environment conducive to the development needs of staff and volunteers, and participate in the teaching of staff including clinical staff, student nurses, visiting students and volunteers. Ensure nursing development is consistent with Marie Curie Nursing Strategy and national guidance. Take responsibility for the educational needs of Day Therapy staff members, and where appropriate work with the Hospice Manager and Practice Educator to develop programmes to meet their needs. Co-ordinate areas of expertise within the team in conjunction with the wider clinical teams. Oversee and participate in induction programmes for new staff. Ensure all Day Therapy staff participate in mandatory update training. Adjust scope of practice where necessary to improve patient care. Adhere to NMC Code of Professional Conduct or equivalent in the performance of clinical duties and to be professionally accountable for all actions while on duty. Keep up to date with current issues in nursing and changes in clinical practice, and to ensure ongoing personal development in line with NMC requirements or equivalent.
