1 INTERMEDIATE MODERN STANDARD ARABIC Arabic 102- Instructor Huda Shanawani 3 hours per week, 3 credits COURSE DESCRIPTION: Intermediate Modern Standard Arabic will build on the student’s knowledge of Arabic 101 through the development of the communicative language level via classroom activities, group interaction and home assignments using an Arabic text book, computers and the internet. Students will advance their reading and speaking in various everyday scenarios. There will be an emphasis on audio-oral skills, reading, and advance grammatical structures—including verb conjugation, pronouns, etc *Arabic 101 is a prerequisite. However, a student who demonstrates knowledge of the Arabic alphabet and an ability to read Arabic at a basic level may be allowed to register in this course. OBJECTIVES & GOALS: 1: Communication: Students understand and engage in conversations and correspondence in Arabic to provide and obtain information, express feelings, emotions and exchange ideas. 2: Cultures: Gain knowledge & demonstrate an understanding of the Cultures of The Arab World and gain awareness of the various perspectives of the culture. 3: Connections: Use Arabic to connect with other disciplines and acquire information to further their knowledge of other disciplines through Arabic. 4: Comparisons: Develop insight into the language and culture of the Middle East by comparisons to their own culture. Attendance: Class attendance and timely arrival is mandatory. Two late arrivals count as one absence. Two absences during the semester are allowed. Please note that attendance is part of the overall grade. 2. Class Participation and Etiquette: This course requires active and continuous participation in class. The quality and frequency of your participation will affect the final grade. 3. Assignments: Must be handed on time. Assignments handed late will not receive full credit. If absent, a student must get the home work-assignment from either the instructor via email or fellow students. 4. Missed Quizzes cannot be made up: the grade for a missed quiz is “O”. The lowest quiz grade may be dropped, pending overall performance. 5. Role playing: it is expected that through this course students will utilize and improve their speaking, vocabulary, and grammar skills. At the instructor’s discretion, English may be used to clarify difficult points. Students should expect to engage in conversation in Arabic. While this might occasionally seem to slow down the pace, it actually speeds up the actual learning of the foreign language. This course will take students through the natural pattern of listening, imitating, speaking, reading, and writing.
