From the commencement of this course, there is a focus on gaining a strong foundation in the communicative skills of listening and speaking, as well reading and writing. While the concentration is on classical Arabic, there will be some exposure to dialect through proverbs and music, which builds up vocabulary as well as encourages students to learn about the customs and traditions of the Arab world. We will work to master use of the dictionary with chapters from contemporary Arabic literature. Student participation and group activities encouraging conversation in Arabic are vital to the course. Course is conducted entirely in Arabic. We will meet Monday, Weds, and Friday from 11:30-12:20, and students will have one hour long AT sessions on Tuesday and Thursday. For every hour of class it is expected that the student prepares and studies between 2-3 hours on their own. Since language learning is a cumulative process, students are expected to attend all classes. If class is missed, the student is responsible for the material. Any student who misses 25% of the course will automatically receive an F. We will have an Arabic table every Wednesday at 12:30 at Vail Commons. An Arabic film will be shown every Wednesday night from 7:00-9:00 in 1086 Chambers. There will be other extracurricular cultural activities, which will be announced throughout the semester.
