Works Consulted Overview
As you work on your research project, you will need to track your information sources. These
include primary sources (interviews) as well as secondary sources. This information will be included at
the end of your project on a Works Consulted page. You must keep track of the interviews you have with
your subject (personal, phone, e-mail and/or fax) and other family members (mom or grandma might be
able to help you fill in some blanks) in addition to the secondary sources (books, websites, etc…) you use
for your sidebars. In order to prepare you for middle school, we follow the guidelines used at Middlesex
Middle School. By this time, you should have reviewed and practiced documenting research sources in
library.
Attached is information about documenting your sources – please see your teacher or Mrs. Heyde
if you have any questions. Also, included in this packet are bibliography worksheets for you to use.
They will help you keep track of the resources from which you get your information. Make sure you take
time to fill out the worksheets as you go along. It can be difficult to go back and get the information later;
especially if you used library books that cannot be checked out, or were checked out and later returned.
We have also attached a sample Works Consulted page. When creating your Works Consulted
page remember:
-
The author must be given credit whenever possible no matter what type of
resource (magazine, internet article, encyclopedia article, book, etc.)
-
Author’s names are always organized last name first with a comma in between.
-
All entries are organized in alphabetical order (no matter what type of resource).
-
All entries start at the left margin and if there is a second or third line, it is
indented.
-
Each entry is single spaced (if it is more than 1 line), and there must be 2 spaces
between entries.

Works Consulted Construction Rules

Alphabetize by first word, whether it is author or title (do not separate items by
type of resource). If the title begins with “The”, “A”, or “An”, skip that word and
alphabetize by the second word.

Do not number your sources.

Indent the second, third, etc. line.

Do not underline periods.

Single space each entry with a single blank line in between. Type your
information all the way across (natural line break); do not force it to the next line.

Be consistent with the titles, use italics or underline, not both.

Dates are written - day, month year. Example: 14 March 2006.

Date for the online visit has parenthesis and a period on the outside. Example: (25 April
2007).

All web addresses are typed only from double slash to first single slash – hyperlink is
removed and sideways carrots are added on. Do not write in http://
Example: <www.darienps.org>

Be sure to look for the web page title (what information are you reading) and the
web site title (who put that information there).
