CONTENT: Advanced Repertory provides the environment for creating and mounting new dance
works by both professional and student choreographers for performance. Advanced students will be
required to participate in challenging works by guest choreographers who are invited by the director to
create or remount works selected for their artistic and technical excellence. Advanced Dance
Repertory students will create their own dance pieces in any dance style for performance purposes.
Additionally, senior Advanced Dance Repertory students will be required to choreograph a senior
project in the form of an extended work that will include a solo as well as a group dance.
A. Course Goals and Objectives
Goal
Students will learn a variety of advanced
dances in ballet, modern, jazz and other styles
for performance purposes.
Objectives
1. Students will learn dance repertory by
professional guest artists. The dances are
selected for artistry, content, and technical
range.
2. Students will view videotapes of different
professional choreographers and choreograph
short studies in the styles and forms viewed.
3. Students will develop their own dances in
different dance styles (e.g. ballet, modern, jazz,
folk/traditional).
4. Students will work on solo dances as well as
collaborating in groups of various sizes and
various configurations.
5. Students will use the technical vocabulary of
dance to describe, memorize and teach dances
to be performed.
6. Students will use a wide range of dance,
musical, theatrical, and technological elements
in their original works.
7. Students will learn to critique dance works
and apply the lessons learned to future
choreography.
8. Students will continue to develop their own
preferences in dance styles and performance

1.1 Demonstrate highly developed physical
coordination and control when performing complex
locomotor and axial movement phrases from a
variety of genres (e.g. refined body articulation,
agility, balance, and strength).

advanced level of technical skill and clear intent.
1.3 Memorize and perform complicated works of
dance at a level of professionalism (i.e. a high level
of refinement).
1.4 Apply a wide range of kinesthetic

1. Students will fill out personal goal sheets and make critical and valid evaluations as they
monitor their progress.
2. Students will have rubrics for grading their dance compositions and performances.
3. Students will self-assess dances through peer evaluations and viewing videotaped
performances.
4. Students will demonstrate cooperative learning activities by application of knowledge in
new and familiar tasks during performances of dances that reflect imagination, creativity,
and artistry.
5. Students will fill out specific self-assessment reflection sheets after each performance.
6. Journals will be evaluated periodically by instructor.

F. Assessment Criteria
Student work will be assessed based on the criteria set forth by departmental and class rubrics.
These rubrics are used to grade essays, presentations, performances, projects, and exams. For
high achievement, students should be able to:
1. Formulate a clear and concise thesis statement for all essay work.
2. Organize essays, records and dance presentations so that the audience has a clear sense of
purpose and/or argument.
3. Use historical and literary detail and examples in written work to support the thesis.
4. Use a variety of sources and synthesize the information accurately without plagiarism.
5. Show originality and creativity, understanding and an awareness of multiple perspectives.
6. Show a mastery of mechanics used for communication: grammar, technology, rhetoric and
oratory
7. Show a mastery of technical dance skill, range, and competency in dance composition and
performance.
8. Show leadership skills and organizational skills in running rehearsals and completing
planned timelines with precision.
