COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This low-intermediate-level ESL course provides instruction and practice in the listening comprehension and
speaking of academic English and the development of academic vocabulary and critical thinking skills.
COURSE PREREQUISITE (S):
ESLX 0811or assessment testing
RATIONALE:
This course is the second course in a sequence of Academic Listening and Speaking courses. It prepares lowintermediate-level ESL students for success after completing the high-beginning-level entry course in the ESLX
program. It combines specific listening and speaking instruction with academic content and opportunities to
expand critical thinking skills.

Upon completion of ESLX0812, the student will be able to:
1. Predict content and identify main ideas and details in audio presented at level-appropriate speed with
70% accuracy.
2. Identify and use relevant, level- and content-appropriate vocabulary and appropriate pronunciation and
intonation in oral presentations with 70% accuracy.
3. Identify and use standard grammatical forms in speaking and writing with 70% accuracy.
4. Integrate information from multiple sources for use in oral presentations with 70% accuracy.

TOPICAL UNIT OUTLINE/UNIT OBJECTIVES:
1. Unit Outcomes:Role-play a school committee discussion reaching a decision about the school dress
code.
Listening objective: Listening for main ideas and specific details; understanding speakers’
attitudes/intonation.
Speaking objective: Drawing attention to main ideas.
Vocabulary objective: Identifying and using collocations of nouns with verbs.
Grammar objective: Present continuous verbs.
Pronunciation objective: Interjections and intonation.
Critical thinking objective: Integrate information from multiple sources; anticipate arguments contrary
to one’s own.
2. Unit Outcomes: In a group presentation, describe key aspects of a building that the group members have
designed.
