J. CLARKE RICHARDSON COLLEGIATE MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT Principles of Mathematics, Grade 9, Academic MPM1D Course Outline Course Description This course enables students to develop generalizations of mathematical ideas and methods through the exploration of applications, the effective use of technology, and abstract reasoning. Students will investigate relationships to develop equations of straight lines in analytic geometry, explore relationships between volume and surface area of objects in measurement, and apply extended numeric and algebraic skills in problem solving. Students will engage in abstract extensions of core learning that will deepen their mathematical knowledge and enrich their understanding. Course Strands Number Sense and Algebra Linear Relations Analytic Geometry Measurement and Geometry Units of Study Unit 1: Review of Essential Skills Unit 2: Polynomials Unit 3: Solving Equations Unit 4: Modelling with Graphs Unit 5: Linear Relations Unit 6: Measurement Unit 7: Geometry Resources McGraw-Hill Ryerson; Principles of Mathematics 9 (The replacement cost is $90) If a textbook is returned in damaged condition, the textbook will need to be replaced. Course Evaluation Seventy percent of a student’s final grade will be based on assessments and evaluations conducted throughout the term. Thirty percent of the final grade will be based on a final evaluation administered towards the end of the course. Term Work (70%) Knowledge /Understanding Thinking/Inquiry Communication Application Homework Check 40% of term work/28% of final mark 10% of term work/ 7% of final mark 7% of term work/ 5% of final mark 36% of term work/25% of final mark 7% of term work/5% of final mark Final Evaluation (30%) EQAO (Review package and exam) Exam 10% (of final mark) 20% (of final mark) In addition to course expectations, students are to demonstrate learning skills in each of their courses. Teachers assess student progress in the five learning skill categories: Works independently Teamwork Organization Work Habits Initiative Teaching and Learning Strategies A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be incorporated throughout the course. Accommodations and Modifications Teachers must use strategies and evaluation procedures that include accommodations and modifications to meet the needs of exceptional students as outlined in their Individual Education Plan (I.E.P.) Evaluation Rules Students are expected to complete all course work assigned to them. Homework will be checked on a regular basis. If a student is absent from class, it is the student’s responsibility to inquire about the work that he or she missed. Students are not to miss a test and/or assignment without parental communication with the teacher.
