LISGAR COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE

COURSE NAME: Grade 9 Academic Mathematics

COURSE CODE: MPM1D/G

COURSE WEBSITE: lci-sheremeto.wikispaces.com

Teacher: J. Sheremeto E-mail: julie.sheremeto@ocdsb.ca

Office: Room 309

OVERVIEW:

This course enables students to develop an understanding of mathematical concepts related to algebra, analytic geometry, and measurement and geometry through investigation, the effective use of technology, and abstract reasoning. Students will investigate relationships, which they will then generalize as equations of lines, and will determine the connections between different representations of a linear relation. They will also explore relationships that emerge from the measurement of three-dimensional figures and two-dimensional shapes.

Students will reason mathematically and communicate their thinking as they solve multistep problems.

OVERALL COURSE EXPECTATIONS

Number Sense and Algebra

• demonstrate an understanding of the exponent rules of multiplication and division,

and apply them to simplify expressions;

• manipulate numerical and polynomial expressions, and solve first-degree equations.

Linear Relations

• apply data-management techniques to investigate relationships between two variables;

• demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics of a linear relation;

• connect various representations of a linear relation.

Analytic Geometry

• determine the relationship between the form of an equation and the shape of

its graph with respect to linearity and non-linearity;

• solve problems involving linear relations;

•determine, through investigation, the properties of the slope and y -intercept of a linear relation;

Measurement and Geometry

• determine, through investigation, the optimal values of various measurements;

• solve problems involving the measurements of two-dimensional shapes and the surface areas and volumes of three-dimensional figures;

• verify, through investigation, geometric properties and relationships involving two-dimensional shapes, and apply the results to solving problems.

Mathematical Processes

In addition to the course expectations, the following skills will be further developed:

● Problem Solving

● Connecting

● Reasoning and Proving

● Communicating

● Reflecting

● Representing

● Selecting Tools & Computational Strategies

EVALUATION

Your final grade in the course is based on the following:

Term Work based on course expectations 70 %

10 % EQAO Summative

Exam 20 %

100 %

ASSESSMENT & EVALUATION METHODS

Activities and group work: We will do activities in groups to explore and gain a different understanding

of concepts and practice with the mathematical processes. Some activities

will combine multiple strands. Your participation will be observed and appreciated.

Practice: We will have worksheets and homework for you to practice and reinforce concepts taught in class.

Quizzes: We will have quizzes to check your understanding of the concepts and your communication of ideas.

Review Work: At the end of each unit, before the test, you will be assigned Review work.

This will give you more practice to make sure you are ready for the test.

Tests: A test will be held at the end of every unit and is your opportunity to show what you can do.

Performance Task: Every unit will include a performance task. These will be handed in to be marked.

HANDLING ABSENCES & LATES

If you are absent for any reason (e.g. field trip, illness), you are responsible for any missed material and discussion. A note from your parent or guardian must be provided for each absence. If you know of an absence in advance or have missed a formal evaluation, please see your teacher to make the necessary arrangements.

EXPECTATIONS OF OUR CLASS

 respect yourself and others

 bring a positive attitude

 learn by doing: try everything (in class and homework)

 take responsibility of your learning

 if you have questions or need clarification, make sure you get it

 use available resources: yourself, discussion board, classmates, textbook, teacher

 come to class on-time and with the appropriate materials

Bring these materials to class each day:

Textbook – Covered • Notebook – Neat, orderly and up-to-date

Scientific Calculator • Pencils & an eraser

If someone has difficulty meeting the class expectations, the following steps will occur:

1) The student will be reminded of the expectations

2) A student – teacher conference occurs to discuss the student’s progress and specific behaviours

3) Contact will be made with the student’s parents to help support student's success

4) Have a parent – teacher – student conference to discuss specific goals and steps to achieve them
