Are Your Parachutes Packed?
Have You Considered Your Packer?
As we begin a new school year, we find ourselves stocking up
on all sorts of supplies to ensure we are ready for the first day
of school, but have we remembered to check our parachutes?
The following story is a favorite of mine as it reminds me to
think about the impact we have on others. I have decided to
use this month’s administrative corner to share the following
story with you. Perhaps you have heard it before, but it relays
a lesson of critical importance in life. If you haven’t read this
before, take time to enjoy it, if you have read it before ponder
its true meaning and application to life itself. All too often we
may forget about packing parachutes…
Recently, I was sitting in a restaurant in
Kansas City. A man about two tables away
kept looking at me. I didn't recognize him. A
few minutes into our meal he stood up and
walked over to my table, looked down at me,
pointed his finger in my face and said,
"You're Captain Plumb."
I looked up and I said, "Yes sir, I'm Captain
Plumb."
He said, "You flew jet fighters in Vietnam.
You were on the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk.
You were shot down. You parachuted into
enemy hands and spent six years as a
prisoner of war."
I said, "How in the world did you know all
that?"

(Subject to Change)
He replied, "Because, I packed your parachute."
I was speechless. I staggered to my feet and held out a very grateful hand
of thanks. This guy came up with just the proper words. He grabbed my
hand, he pumped my arm and said, "I guess it worked."
"Yes sir, indeed it did", I said, "and I must tell you I've said a lot of prayers
of thanks for your nimble fingers, but I never thought I'd have the
opportunity to express my gratitude in person."
I didn't get much sleep that night. I kept thinking about that man. I kept
wondering what he might have looked like in a Navy uniform - a Dixie cup
hat, a bib in the back and bell bottom trousers. I wondered how many
times I might have passed him on board the Kitty Hawk. I wondered how
many times I might have seen him and not even said "good morning",
"how are you", or anything because, you see, I was a fighter pilot and he
was just a sailor. How many hours did he spend on that long wooden
table in the bowels of that ship weaving the shrouds and folding the silks
of those chutes? I could have cared less...until one day my parachute
came along and he packed it for me.
-- Insights Into Excellence: Packing Parachutes Excerpt from Chapter 16, Charlie Plumb)
As another semester approaches and the school year begins, I encourage us all to
contemplate and consider those who have helped us pack our parachutes both
personally and professionally at the College of Southern Idaho. As a child and as an
adult, I have had the good fortune to have been taught by example through my
parents’ actions and words that the people who have helped shape our lives and
supported us should never go unremembered or unappreciated. The success of one
person greatly depends on the efforts of others to support, give encouragement, and
provide unsolicited help whether it is behind the scenes or on the forefront.
Many students at the College of Southern Idaho depend on us regardless of the
capacity of our positions at CSI, which begs the question, how are our parachutepacking skills as professionals? I feel so blessed that I was afforded the opportunity to
attend CSI as a student several years ago. Like so many of the students we see today,
I was crossing unchartered waters and needed a lot of guidance and support to
realize that my educational goals could be attained, and that what I thought to be
only dreams for myself could be reality. CSI is truly a special place, we lend support to
our students in times of need, we offer friendly smiles, personal connections,
dedicated service, and we are always prepared with a box of tissues at our desks just
in case….As we get busy with life we often forget about packing parachutes and all
those who depend on us to pack their chute well. As we begin a new school year,
don’t forget to recognize the people that you are dependent on or the people
dependent on you. Your packing skills may make all the difference in the world.
Cheers to a great semester!
Kristin

Picks From the Shelf
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society – Book – What a refreshing style of
reading. Everything is correspondence. Letters back and forth from an author, her publisher,
a couple of dear friends and members from the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
delight the senses. This Society is from Guernsey Island, one of the Channel Islands between
the United Kingdom and France and the story takes place during and just after the German
occupation of Guernsey. What a fine bunch of folks in this novel. There is even the proverbial
busy-body of a snit everyone loves to be disgusted with. Kris Haney recommended this book
to me. And I highly recommend to all of you. Authors are Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie
Barrows. – Ann Keane, ADC Office Spec.
Two Spirits – DVD – This enlightening documentary from [I]ndependentLens is a must see for
those who wish to understand the concept of having both male and female identities in one
individual. According to ancient Indian beliefs a person held a special prominence in the tribe
if they held both spirits within their body. It was not until Christianity came into play that this
belief was presented as wrong and abnormal. It does not matter what you believe on this
subject—the movie is worth your time and energies. It does not set out to change your mind
on anything—just present the facts regarding the hate crime murder of a Navajo boy named
Fred/Fredrica Martinez—a boy with a family and friends who lived true to himself. This movie
has garnered 6 different awards. – Ann Keane, ADC Office Spec.
Conversations with Lee Kuan Yew, Citizen Singapore: How to Build a Nation – Book – This
insightful little book is written by Journalist Tom Plate and is the first in a series of books that
will be designated as Giants of Asia. I was watching Charlie Rose one night and there was the
most interesting and intelligent elderly gentleman on there. This gentleman turned out to be
Lee Kuan Yew. I decided I had to learn some more about this person because he was so
intriguing. LKY, known as Minister Mentor is a sharp fellow who speaks his mind on worldly
matters and why different forms of government work and don’t work. Everyone might not
agree with his ideas but there is no denying that LKY is a highly intelligent and well educated
individual who cares for his country as a whole. LKY’s methods that have turned into
successes have brought leaders from all over the world to seek his thoughts on matters. This
is a great book to read if you like to enrich your knowledge of the world as a whole. – Ann
Keane, ADC Office Spec.
Land Girls – DVD – A wonderful story sponsored by the BBC for the 70th anniversary of the
start of World War II. Watch the intertwined stories of four young women doing their part for
the war effort by joining the forces of the land girls in taking care of farm duties while the
men are off to war. This movie is well made and the stories will touch your heart. This is one
you want for the weekend because it has two discs with a total of 5 episodes. – Ann Keane,
ADC Office Spec.
If you have a favorite book, movie or CD from our very own CSI library you would like to recommend to
your co-workers, let me know about it. You don’t need to be a professional critic. All you need is two to
four sentences giving info on why you think it is something folks might want to spend their time on. –

New Faces on Campus
Jamie Carter, Replacing Caralee Perry
Office Specialist, Ag Department
Evergreen A40, ext. 6400
Hello. My name is Jamie Carter. I have lived in Twin Falls mostly all of my life. I graduated
from the College of Southern Idaho with my 2-year degree in Psychology in 2009. I recently
came back to school and completed my 2-year degree in Criminal Justice. I have plans of
continuing that degree and obtaining my bachelors in Criminal Justice from Boise State. I have
been very lucky to have been a part of the CSI family for the last few years working with the
Law Enforcement Program. I recently have been given the opportunity to join the team in the
Evergreen building and I am very excited for this new adventure.
Dr. Cindy Seaman, New Position
Instructor, Dental Hygiene
HSHS 1216, ext. 6725
Dr. Cindy Seaman brings 35 years of experience in dentistry to CSI’s Department of Dental
Hygiene. Cindy began her career with a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene, later
completing an MBA and a Doctorate in Organizational Leadership. She has served in
leadership roles in her professional organization, the community, and the dental office. Cindy
and her husband Paul raise purebred cattle and operate a bovine liquid supplement
dealership in Filer with their three Border Collies. “I began in the department as part of the
accreditation team, moving on as adjunct faculty. The college is welcoming and I feel at home
here. I’ve found the values conveyed by CSI align with my own, particularly working together
with the community for the greater good of society. Please stop by the HSHS building and say
hello.”
Brittney Gray, Replacing Pat Selelyo
Biology Instructor
Shields 203A, ext. 6824
Hello All! I am Brittney Gray and am new to CSI. I was born and raised in Orange County,
California where I spent most of my childhood dedicated to playing softball. I moved to
Tucson, Arizona to pursue my Bachelors degree in Physiology. After four long years in the dry
110 degree heat, I decided to stay there for another two years to complete my Masters in
Physiology, specifically focusing on a new and upcoming fitness exercise known as Whole
Body Vibration. While pursuing my Masters, I decided to also get certified as an EMT. I have
an awesome husband, who just ended his five year active duty contract with the United States
Marine Corps and who is continuing his military career with the National Guard. I also have an
amazing 4 year old step son Tyler who is the only child I know that dislikes Disneyland. I
enjoy pretty much anything outdoors such as snowboarding, paintballing, hunting, hiking,
fishing, and MMA/Muay Thai. I absolutely love teaching and am so excited to be working at
this amazing college. I look forward to meeting both students and employees of CSI.
Kory Lloyd, Replacing Mary Beth Crane
English Instructor
Shields 112, ext. 6811
Hello everyone! I have been adjunct at CSI for the last three years and originally started
working with this great institution by teaching in the Adult Basic Education Program. I love CSI
and my association with the students and staff who are here. I have a bachelor’s degree in
business from BSU and knew that if I ever went back to school I would change my major to my
passion—English. I have been reading and writing since my early youth and should have
majored accordingly. After several different business adventures, my opportunity came to go
back to school and thus my Master of Arts in English was born. It was one of the best
decisions I have ever made and I haven’t looked back since my career change in teaching. I
have a great family with six children that keep me busy. We enjoy camping, biking and most
things outdoors. Of course I am always involved in literature and writing and am currently
trying to cure myself of a Dean Koontz addiction. I also love reading the classics and have
three or four in progress. I don’t write as much as I would like to, but that has always been
problematic. I’ve always had too many fires burning at one time, but I’m looking forward to
focusing on one strong blaze as I work with all of you to make CSI a great place to learn and
work.
Jonathan Lord, Replacing Brook Skidmore
Phy Ed Instructor
Gym 226, ext. 6484
Hi, my name is Jonathan Lord, and I am the new Physical Education Instructor at the College
of Southern Idaho. I would like to take a moment to introduce my family and myself. I have
been married for the past seven years to my beautiful wife Sarah and we have one daughter,
Adalyn who is almost two. My wife is an Occupational Therapist and we both enjoy running,
biking and snowshoeing amongst a myriad of other things!
I hold a master’s degree in teaching and leadership, and during my academic career I focused
on developing college aged students and adults through using many training and
development techniques emphasizing outdoor education. I went into this field because of my
passion for student development and mentoring and the role that plays in helping students
realize their potential and skills.
Dan Daggett, Replacing Scott Henscheid
Web Programmer & Developer
GRM/Library, ext. 6847
Dan Daggett (Social Geek) - I’ve been going to and working at CSI for the last 17 years. I went
through the Internet Technologies program here at CSI after which I worked at CSI as the
webmaster for about 4 years. During this time I met and married my beautiful wife
Chika. After leaving CSI I worked in the private industry doing computer support, server
management, and web development. Now I’m back at CSI. More important than any of this is
the fact that Chika and I have a new baby born in April of 2011, Momo. Hopefully in the next
year or so Momo will be up to speed and helping with my computer duties.
Cortney Clark, Replacing Debbie Dodds
Assistant Women’s Softball Coach
Gym, ext. 6495
My name is Cortney Clark and I am from Show Low, AZ. I graduated from Show Low High
School in 2003. From there I attended the University of Arizona on an athletic scholarship to
play softball. After 2 years, I transferred over to Brigham Young University where I continued
to play softball and got my Bachelors Degree in Exercise Science in August of 2008. I got
married July 8, 2006 to my husband Heath Clark. We now have two daughters Addisyn (3) and
Aspyn (2). They definitely keep us busy but are the most awesome kiddos around. After BYU,
Heath and I move back to Arizona for a couple years before I was hired on by CSI! In my free
time I enjoy crafting, being outdoors, working out, and my newest hobby – Team Roping,
although, I couldn’t be more excited about my newest adventure here at the College of
Southern Idaho. I am excited to see what is in store for me and be able to coach some
awesome gals! I know I will meet many new faces around and I am excited to see what lies
ahead.
Nick Aiello, replacing Kris Welker
Assistant Baseball Coach
Gym 133/Clubhouse 224, ext. 6477
Nick Aiello begins his first season with the College of Southern Idaho baseball program as a
pitching coach. Aiello, who pitched for the Golden Eagles in 1999, comes to CSI from the
College of Southern Nevada where he assisted last season.
"Nick has an outstanding reputation as one of the top pitching coaches in the Las Vegas
area," said CSI Athletic Director Joel Bate. "He is highly respected for his knowledge and his
ability to get the best out of his players. With his ties to the Vegas baseball community, it
should open up recruiting relationships in that area. We are lucky to have a former Eagle with
that kind of talent come back to join us."
Aiello came to CSI the first time in 1999 after transferring from Grayson College. That year,
he earned Region 18 Tournament MVP honors in leading CSI to the Region 18 Championship.
He graduated from CSI with an associate's degree in liberal arts.

Tampa Bay Rays in 2001. He played in the Rays minor league organization for three years.

an associate scout for the Tampa Bay Rays.

Eldon Evans Expo Center, ext. 6618
"I am very excited to have Cody join the CSI Rodeo Program as a coach. He had a lot of
success here when he competed for the CSI Rodeo Team and I look forward to working with
him and watching him succeed as our rough stock coach. His professional career has been
exceptional as well. He has qualified for the National Finals Rodeo three times and is on track
to qualify again this year. His experience and knowledge will definitely help our program and
all of our kids and I'm glad to have him on board."

District, conducting three choirs at O’Leary Middle School. She will continue this work during
her first full-time year at CSI. Prior to and alongside her work at the college, Serena
maintained a thriving private voice studio in Twin Falls. Serena graduated magna cum laude
from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California, where she received a BA in Vocal
