Roy Marsh. Chair of Ordsall & Langworthy Community Committee Do you remember the Spanish children who came to Seedley in 1937? In June 1937, during the Spanish Civil War following the bombing of the Basque region of Spain, a group of Basque orphans were evacuated to Salford. These children stayed at Harold’s Memorial Orphanage on Seedley Road, and went to school at the Friends Meeting House (now the British Legion) on Langworthy Road. Local people raised money, gave toys and arranged seaside outings for them. Local artist Claire Hignett and researcher Steve Cunio are trying to find out more about these children and this little bit of forgotten Salford history to make a piece of art work and to record people’s memories. They have already uncovered a photo of the children from a lady called Vicki whose mum used to play with them. Claire and Steve would like to hear from anyone who was a child at the time and who remembers anything about them; they will now be in their eighties at least! They are also trying to find any photos of the orphanage; it was the big old house on the triangle of land between Seedley Road and Sandy Lane that was knocked down 10 to 15 years ago to make way for new houses. If you have any information about the children, the orphanage, the fundraising, other links about Salford and the Spanish War or would like Claire to come and talk to your -1- group please contact her at info@clairehignett.co.uk There is more information about the children on Claire’s website www.clairehignett.co.uk -2- -3- A new multi-sensory room is now open in Salford Bubble tubes, fibre optic lights, sensory wall, infinity tunnel, UV lighting, soft play and a film wall with high definition projection are available at Fit City Ordsall. Swinton still a pig farm, And Worsley it would seem, To be a church set on its own, With fields for miles around, And Eccles would be far too small to be thought of a town, But Salford wasn’t made by an immortal in the sky, It’s made from sweat and blood of man and pain that made us cry, These dirty streets contain our love, our past, our dreams, our fears, It’s not just bricks and mortar, But the struggle through the years, But for all the change it’s still the same, I know it may seem odd, This city came from man, Much more than just from God.
