The ‘Vernieuwingsimpuls’ scheme offers personal fellowships to talented researchers in different stages of their career. Project proposals can be submitted to NWO each year, and selected candidates will have to present their proposal to a committee. The deadlines for this year are: Grant Yrs after PhD Amount For Deadline Veni 0-3 € 250.000 candidates’ postdoc salary 6 January 2010 Vidi 3-8 € 800.000 salaries for PhD students and/or postdocs 4 October 2010 Vici 8-15 € 1.500.000 salaries for PhD students and/or postdocs 31 March There are two important modifications in the procedure with respect to last year’s round: Limited submission possibilities for Veni and Vidi: With effect from 2011 a new submission condition applies to applicants. For the Veni and Vidi rounds, researchers may only submit a proposal on two occasions. Only applicants who had already submitted a proposal twice before 2011 may make a third submission via a transitional arrangement. For Vici, researchers may submit a proposal on three occasions. New deadline Vidi: The deadline for the Vidi round in 2011 is 4 October. With this change the deadline is shifted from February to October. For applicants who fall outside of the submission conditions as a result of this shift in deadline, a transitional arrangement applies: applicants who gained their doctorates between 1 January 2003 and 4 October 2003 can submit a Vidi proposal. Researchers who do not need to make use of the transitional arrangement fall within the standard conditions of the Innovational Research Incentives Scheme. NWO has information days on 17 September 2010 and 7 October 2010. See below. Potential Leiden candidates are requested to inform their Institutes Scientific Director. Within all faculties there is support for the preparation of the application and for the interview. For further information contact Anke Klerkx. The focus in the region Zuidvleugel Randstad in which Leiden is located is on projects that fall within the economic clusters: 1) Harbor and Industry Complex 2) Glass agriculculture suppliers 3) International Justice, Peace and Security. The focus of projects within this theme should be on economic development related to the cluster, not knowledge development itself. 4) Life & health sciences. The focus of projects within this theme should be on facilitating knowledge transfer from knowledge institutes to companies, or improvement of middle (MBO) and higher education (HBO) education to solve the shortage of qualified technical staff. EU-Japan Coordinated Call. ♣ 16-11-2010 Energy international research staff exchange scheme with US and Japan Leiden External Funding Newsletter no 25 – November 2010 6 The DG RTD's Directorate for Energy has launched a call for a researcher exchange programme in the field of energy open to research entities from the EU, US and Japan. This unique pilot action aims at providing support to European energy research entities in order to establish or reinforce long-term research cooperation by exchanging researchers for short periods between Europe and the US or Europe and Japan. The scheme is very similar to the Marie Curie International Research Staff Exchange Scheme (IRSES) launched in 2008: The staff exchange programme can have a maximum duration of four years, while the maximum duration of the individual staff exchanges is one year. The amount of the fixed EU contribution is € 1900 per exchanged staff member per month. Researchers participating in this exchange programme will be “seconded” from their research entities maintaining their salary and the possibility to return to their institution of origin after the exchange programme is concluded. http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/dc/index.cfm?fuseaction=UserSite.CooperationDetailsCallPage&call_id=316 16-11-2010 FP7-ENERGY-2011-1 Energy .2011.2.3-2: Development of design tools for Offshore Wind farm clusters Energy.2011.2.5-1: Thermal energy storage for CSP plants Energy.20112.5-2 Advanced heat transfer fluids for CSP technology Energy.2011.3.7-1: Development of new or improved sustainable bio-energy carriers Energy.2011.4.1-1: Revisiting solar-thermal systems for using breakthroughs in scientific and technological fields Energy.2011.5.1-1: High-efficiency post-combustion solvent-based capture processes. This will be achieved through a transnational networking mechanism, aimed at structuring the existing high-quality initial research training capacity throughout Member States and associated countries. ♣ 17-02-2011 ERA-Net BiodivERsA: Preannouncement of joint call scheduled BiodivERsA is a network composed of national organisations funding or managing research programmes on biodiversity across Europe. The objectives of this ERA-Net are to promote the cooperation between funding agencies and to coordinate research programmes to eventually develop and implement joint activities. The call will address the following themes: a) Relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem services; b) Valuation of biodiversity and ecosystem services (monetary and non-monetary), and better incorporation of biodiversity and ecosystem services into society and policy. For further information please see: http://www.eurobiodiversa.org/content/view/262/1/ 17-02-2011 FP7-Marie Curie 2011-Int’l. Research Staff Exchange Scheme The Marie Curie International Research Staff Exchange Scheme is an action that aims to strengthen research partnerships through staff exchanges and networking activities between European research organisations and research organisations from countries with which the European Union has an S&T agreement or are in the process of negotiating one, and countries covered by the European Neighbourhood policy. Compared to individual Marie Curie Actions, that provide mobility possibilities to individual researchers, this new action will provide support to research organisations to establish or reinforce long-term research cooperation through a coordinated joint programme of exchange of researchers for short periods. ♣ 17-03-2011: Call for proposals for the Marie Curie Action IRSES - International Research Staff Exchange Scheme IRSES aims at strengthening research partnerships by providing financial support for short period staff exchange and networking activities between European research organisations (based in EU member states or associated countries) and research organisations either located in countries with which the Community has an S&T Agreement (e.g. USA, China) or in countries covered by the European Neighbourhood Policy (e.g. Georgia, Syria). LIFE+ is the only funding instrument of the European Commission to exclusively support environmental projects. The programme addresses projects that are both concerned with the protection of nature and the environment as well as halting the loss of biodiversity in the EU Member States. LIFE+ grants are divided into three sections: - LIFE+ Nature and Biodiversity - LIFE+ Environment Policy and Governance - LIFE+ Information and Communication The European Commission recommends that proposals should be prepared as soon as possible on the basis of the 2010 application package available online. Since there probably will be changes as far as application and submission procedure are concerned, the Commission advises to read the application guidelines carefully. An updated version of the application package 2011 will be provided with the publication of the calls.
