Today’s revenue management systems, incorporating traditional elements previously found only in billing systems and customer relationship management systems, are now moving into new spheres with new products and services creating payment platforms for boosting profitability. Policy formulation and the effective regulation of telecommunications have been identified as critical prerequisites for success if we are to derive the benefits promised by market liberalisation. The role of the government in policy formulation is well-defined – its role in regulation perhaps less so. Fixedmobile convergence is creating fresh challenges and increased complexity. This session will examine these and other issues, on both the local and international fronts, and give valuable insight into the way ahead. South Africa along with most of the developed and developing world suffers from a shortage of ICT skills. A number of initiatives from government, quasi government and business are currently addressing this challenge. In this session we examine some of these initiatives and finish by debating; “ are we on the right track – are we succeeding – what more can we do”. 07:30 REGISTRATION REGISTRATION REGISTRATION 08:30 Effective Strategies for Active Revenue Management Jeremy Deaner, VP Group Sales EMEA, Convergys, UK Update on Current Status and What’s Ahead Mandla Langa, Chairperson, ICASA Developing ICT Skills in South Africa – from demand to delivery Mateli Mpuntsha, CEO, ISETT SETA 09:00 New Realtime Payment Method for new services in fixed, mobile & converged networks - Madelein van den Berg, Technology Solutions Manager, Siemens Telecommunications Policy or Policing – Government’s Role Andrew C Barrett, MD, Barrett Group Inc, USA Building the School Infrastructure – Rodwyn Grewan, CEO, SchoolNet SA 09:30 Techniques for Minimising Fraud Losses Nick Dunlop, Director: Fraud Management Group, Alcatel UK South Africa’s Investment in a Telecommunication Infrastructure – the truth behind this apparent liberalization Edwin Thompson, Regulatory Director, UUNET SA Youth Internship Programme – Developing ICT Skills Alan Hirsch, General Manager: ICT/Electronics Industry, Trade & Investment South Africa, DTI 10:00 From Network to Customer Centric Business – How can Telecoms leverage their customer assets Kris Tokarzewski, CRM Solutions Manager, SAP Mobile Telecommunications – Competition or career? In this session we look at a number of leading edge applications and developments from Swedish companies and their global partners. IP, or Internet Protocol, lies at the heart of modern communications. From Internet access to the growing field of IP telephony (including VoIP), IP is central to the explosive growth being experienced in telecommunications worldwide. Unfortunately, this rapid growth has not impacted upon much of the African continent in the same way that it has elsewhere, and so this session also focuses on the role that IP can and must play in extending cost-effective communications to the whole of Africa. Variously regarded as the last mile, the first mile, the golden mile…, access solutions are the key to ownership of the customer. Much development has taken place in other areas to increase bandwidth capacity, but the access domain remains the bottleneck in terms of high-speed delivery to customers, especially residential customers. Incumbent operators throughout the world own this part of the network and are not going to give it up easily. New developments in access technologies will go along way to overcoming these issues. 14:00 Cost Effective Solutions for Rural Areas Henrik Björendahl EMEA, Allgon Systems, Sweden IP- Foundation of New Market Innovations in Africa Rob Strange, Market Development Manager, Cisco Systems CDMA2000 Access Technology Dr Rao Yallapragada, Director of Technology Marketing, Qualcomm, USA 14:30 Communications for all Pieter van der Westhuizen, Senior Manager: Mobile Systems, Ericsson VoIP and Internet Telephony – their role in opening telecommunications markets Mike van den Bergh, Regional Director, Gateway Communications Supervised Public Access Eckart Zollner, Business Development Manager, PSITEK 15:00 TEA TEA TEA 15:30 Attracting and Managing Content Providers – providing customers with what they need on time Anders Kinberg, Marketing Director, Blue Factory, Sweden Public Telephone and Internet Services in Africa - the telecentre & cybercafe market Mike Jensen, Independent Consultant Making the Business Case for BWA at 3.5 GHz Paul Alberts, Task Group Leader Access, Siemens Telecommunications 16:00 Revenue Assurance aligned for future technologies Stefan Robsen, Account Director, Visual Wireless AB Quality of Service in the Converged Network David Hill, Principal Systems Consultant, Alcatel SA Migrating to IP – based in Business and Wireless Access Gideon van Zyl, Sales Engineering Consultant: SA, Tellabs 16:30 Creating a Wireless Society Anita Jonsson, Director IT & Telecom, Global Projects, Swedish Trade Council Negotiating the Internet Prof Ernest Wilson III, Director: Centre for International Development and Conflict Management, University of Maryland, USA The Access Paradigm Shift – wireless, wireline, broadband and fibre George Debbo, Technical Director, Marconi Communications 17:00 FINISH FINISH FINISH Tel.Com Africa 2002 PROGRAMME DAY THREE TRACK A Multimedia Chairperson: Peter Davies, CSSA New licenses have recently been granted both in terms of value added content and multimedia services. Multimedia services today are being provided on a common IP Platform that has the potential to severely affect revenue streams of the traditional telecommunications providers. This session will give delegates the opportunity to learn about the options, both commercially and technically, emanating from the implementation of these new services in South Africa. TRACK B TRACK C New & Emerging Technologies New Routes and Services for Africa Chairperson; Hans van de Chairperson: Roger Dawes, EIF Groenendaal, Telkom This session looks first at some of the new and innovative developments taking place in South African universities and technikons followed by a look at emerging technologies about to be introduced into the global markets. These include high altitude transit solutions, integrating copper and fibre for delivery solutions, providing services in metropolitan areas, and a look at the new office environment at which communications originate and terminate. With the NEPAD programme successfully launched, telecommunications will be one of the most important driving forces in developing the African economies. Many African countries are already striving to improve their internal landline and mobile service delivery and expand their Internet connectivity, hence the development of SAT3 / WASC / SAFE submarine cable project linking the continent with Europe and the East comes at a most appropriate time. These initiatives will undoubtedly boost the telecommunications industry and provide many opportunities. 07:30 REGISTRATION REGISTRATION REGISTRATION 08:30 Interactive TV for Africa Nolo Letele, CEO, MultiChoice Connecting Africa to leverage ICT for Economic Development Nombulelo Moholi, Chief Sales & Marketing Officer, Telkom 09:00 Video over DSL Herve Cloarec, General Manager, Thomsom Multimedia Telecon Learning: The Telkom Centre of Excellence – a model for Telecommunication Development and innovation Thami Msimago, Executive : Technology Technology Direction and Integration, Telkom 09:30 10:00 10:30 Technical Challenges facing African Broadcasters - Rufus Andrew, Strategic Market Executive: Communications, arivia.kom Review of the best 5 papers from SATNAC 2002 by Post Graduate Students from Telkom Centre of Excellence at various Universities in South Africa Designing Usable Applications for Mobile Computing - Darelle van Greunen Delivering ATM-based video-on-demand Across Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Lines - Emile W Swanson NEPAD and its role in Developing Telecommunications in Africa Dr Henry Chasia, Executive Deputy Chairman, e-Africa Commission International Interconnectivity Services in Africa Roger Chiume, Group Executive, Sentech Set Top Boxes – opportunities for innovation - Peter Griffiths, Marketing Manager, MediaVerge Solutions Progress Towards Copper Cable Identification - Martin Poole Evaluation of Speaker Identification Using GSM data - Lerato Lerato SAT3/WASC/SAFE Sub Marine Cable and Beyond - Wally Beelders, Managing Executive: International and Special Markets, Telkom SA Ltd TEA TEA TEA Next Generation Networks New & Emerging Technologies continued New Routes and Services for Africa continued Chairperson; Reuben September, Chief Technical Officer Telkom Fast Packet Filtering Using N-Ary Decision Diagrams - Adi Attar A number of new services are being introduced into South Africa over next generation networks offering convergence of voice, data and video via intelligent high-speed network technology.
