This specification covers a single layer Index Testudo 16 P, Testudo P Selftene and
Testudo 20 P membrane system, including all flashings to concrete and block substrate
surfaces below ground, in keeping with the Code of Practice for Torch-on Bitumen
Membranes.
The extent of work covers the waterproof tanking to foundation and wall surfaces with
Testudo 16 P 3mm membrane and under-floor slab with Testudo 20 P 4mm membrane.
The Index Testudo 20 P 4mm membrane is either loose laid install over compacted
sand-binded hard fill or over site concrete prior to pouring floor slab.
The membrane system incorporate double layered membrane to all internal and external
corners, at foundations to wall junctions and around all protrusions. including piles, pipes,
etc.
The Index membrane is to be protected by Tefond on Protecto sheet as covered in
section 7.
Index membranes are covered under BRANZ Appraisal 768 (2012) copy obtained off our
website www.hitchins.co.nz
Installation work carried out by an approved Hitchins’ Gunac applicator in keeping with
the Hitchins installation manual and good trade practice.

Products

Index Indever or Formseal Primer is a plasticised bitumen coating to seal substrates.
Index Testudo P Selftene is a modified 2mm bitumen membrane.
Index Testudo P 16 3mm is a 160 gram polyester reinforced bitumen membrane with a
Talc finish and is torch applied.
2.4 Index Testudo P 20 is a 4mm 200 gram polyester reinforced modified bitumen
membrane with a Talc finish and is torch applied or loose laid.
2.5 Tefond is a profiled extruded polypropylene sheet 2.400mm wide by 20 metres long roll
to provide protection to tanking membranes before back-filling, improved drainage and
can be used by itself behind garden retaining walls.

New concrete needs to cure for a minimum of 14 days, preferably 28 days.
Pre-cast concrete panels to be free of boxing release agents
Concrete or concrete lime block substrate should be free of concrete splashes, lumps,
nibs or sharp edges, large holes or defects. Flush out where necessary.
Internal corner ideally should incorporated 25mm concrete or plaster fillet/cove,
otherwise the applicator should install Hitchins bitumen Triafili cove.
External corners ideally slightly rounded or bevel shaped.
Surface to be free of contamination, dirt, be clean and dry.
For loose load membrane system, the ground compacted with hard-fill coarse sand
binded and firmly shaped.
Site concrete cured minimum 7, preferably 14 days.
Working Conditions

Ideal and practical working space is to be provided for the installation of the Index
membrane systems.

Excavation to depth to enable membrane to be continued down bottom of foundations.

Priming
5.1
To dry, clean concrete apply full coat of Index Indever primer or Hitchins’ Formseal
primer.
5.2
Recommended to apply second coat of Formseal primer to light weight lime concrete
blockwork surface.
Underfloor Membrane Installation

Plan all work, pre-cut Testudo membrane to suit height drop requirements.
Install Testudo 200mm flashing strips to all internal and external corners, foundations to
wall junctions, around protrusions, columns, beams, etc
Install the Testudo 16 p 3mm membrane plumb to the vertical surface by torch-on heat
fusion or Testudo P Selftene by peel and adhere.
When installing the Testudo 16 P 3mm membrane to walls, remove backing film off the
Testudo Selftene Tex at foundation and bring Testudo 16 P down over for a total seal or
weld to the Index Testudo 20 P membrane.
Continue with installation by over-lapping new sheet by 75mm and heat weld joints for
good seal.
Mould and weld flashings to all protrusions, then seal around with Tixophalte Sealant.
Check all overlaps for total seal, where required gun apply a bead of Tixophalte Sealant.
In general ensure the Index membrane system is installed to a high standard.
Recommended to install a holding bar at top edge of Index membrane.

Install Index Testudo 20 P 4mm membrane to site concrete by heat fusing to substrate,
flashing to sumps, around piles, adjacent walls, etc.
Alternatively loose lay Index Testudo 20 P 4mm membrane to prepared ground.
Overlap all subsequent Index Testudo 20 P 4mm sheets by 75mm (minimum) and heat weld
all joints.
Flash Testudo 20 P 4mm up the boxing by forming and shaping but not adhering to boxing.
Alternatively install Testudo Selftene Tex membrane by adhering to base membrane but
loose laying to boxing with the release film left on.
Check on all welds to ensure a high standard of installation.
Protect with Tefond installation from floor reinforced and concrete pour.
Installation of Wall Membrane

Trench to be free of extensive water flooding and muddy conditions.
Install Hitchins’ Tefond profiled protection sheet to the Index waterproofing membrane.
Where appropriate, install Hitchins’ Geo-textile cloth over Tefond to provide improved
drainage down the wall.
For structures built into the bank, Tefond should be brought out into the base of the
trench, drainage pipe installed and pea metal placed over.
Fixing of Tefond at top only with provided propriety Tefond fixing nails and plugs.
Care is required when backfilling.
The alternative is to install Hitchins’ Protecto sheet by adhering to the membrane with
Tixophalte.

Remove all excess materials, equipment and debris, clean up and leave site tidy.
Warranty
10.1 Hitchins’ supplied waterproof tanking membrane and protection systems covered under
Product System Durability Statement in keeping with the Building Code.
10.2 Provide the property owner with the Hitchins Product Performance Warrantee for 15 year
period.
10.3 Provide the property owner with your Workmanship Warrantee or applicator Producer
Statement as covered under contract documentation.
