OVERVIEW OF CURTIN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY
Curtin University of Technology has earned a reputation as a dynamic and innovative
Australian University and has gained recognition as a leading provider of education in the
international arena.
Named after John Curtin (1885-1945), Australia's Prime Minister during World War II, the
University strives to uphold his values of vision, leadership and community service.
Aspiring to be a world-class University of Technology, the Curtin community is united by a
commitment to scholarship that embraces teaching and learning and research and
development as complementary and interlinked. Through productive partnerships, the
University strives for excellence in:


Teaching and learning: developing graduates as lifelong learners who make a positive
contribution to society.
Research and development: resulting in creative solutions to significant problems.
Curtin became Australia's first University of Technology in 1987 after two decades operating
as the Western Australian Institute of Technology (WAIT). Today it is the largest university
in Western Australia with over 31,000 students, nearly 11,000 of those offshore and onshore
international students and nearly 1000 research students.
Curtin’s main campus of 115 hectares at Bentley is located 6km from the Perth Central
Business District and is easily accessed by public transport. The Bentley campus provides a
wide range of academic support services and activities, commercial outlets, active sporting
and social clubs, international and other student associations, which contribute to a vibrant
campus life.
Curtin offers over 850 undergraduate and postgraduate courses in business, engineering,
health sciences, humanities, science, mining and agriculture. Our Centre for Aboriginal
Studies offers bridging courses for indigenous students and the Vocational Training and
Education Centre conducts vocational courses at Kalgoorlie and Esperance. Curtin also has
an extensive Research and Development program.
Curtin pioneered the export of education by being the first Australian university to recruit
international students in 1986. It offers teaching and research services offshore in Singapore,
Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and South Africa, and continues to explore new
markets in Vietnam, China, Taiwan, the Middle East and India. It has academic and research
links in more than 35 countries and successful twinning programs with overseas education
institutions.
International students make up almost 40 percent of Curtin’s total student body, the third
highest proportion in Australia with more than 11,000 students drawn from over 95 countries.
As a testament to its commitment to global education, Curtin established a campus at Miri in
Sarawak, the oil industry region of east Malaysia, in 1999 as a joint venture between Curtin
and the Malaysian Government.
9
Curtin continues to develop a range of new degrees appropriate to the international market.
Master programs in International Business, International Studies, Future Studies, Cleaner
Production and an online Master of Business Administration course are only a few of the
postgraduate programs recently developed.
Curtin, in partnership with industry, government and other institutions, aims to move to the
forefront of research and development in specific areas of technology. The University is
committed to positioning itself as a leader in research excellence in Western Australia and the
region, harnessing the strength derived from Curtin's focus on technology. Its approach
articulates a broad view of technology as "the application of creative thinking and ingenuity
to the solution of definable and practical problems in all fields of human endeavour". (Haydn
Williams, Founding Director of WAIT)
The University has a strong research profile in a wide range of disciplines, is involved in
some 52 major research centres and institutes and is a principal member in nine
Commonwealth Cooperative Research Centres.
A major development has been the Strategic Research Alliance between Curtin, the
Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and the State
Government for the establishment of the CSIRO National Research Centre for Petroleum and
Minerals Resources at Technology Park, adjacent to the Bentley campus.
