LIST #43 HAPPY NEW YEAR! Hi Friends----Well, some time has passed since the DNW sale of part two of the Spence holdings---and time for some observations. Peter Preston-Morley, writing in the CTCC Journal, put it very well---though the money is tighter on both sides of the Atlantic, the sale brought some nice prices. Certain areas, such as antislavery, Pidcock’s, Spence, hanging men, etc, brought very high prices. Also found in the sale were many rarities, and they, too were hotly contested. The balance of the sale certainly had some high quality pieces, but there were only so many Pounds or Dollars to go around, and there were some lots that went for bargain prices---or at least relatively so. Many of the tokens in the sale went back to Longman, Lincoln, or before. Many were purchased from Richard Dalton in 1910, and some came from the Davis sale in 1901. Thus many of the tokens represented were in private hands for 100 years or more. Even large groups of tokens were often special, with varieties not usually found. I was able to buy many lots, and many of them contained pieces that were far better than the average piece seen in commerce. They needed nothing---wonderful color, wonderful surfaces, much red and luster seen. Thus you will find on this list a good many pieces that are special, over and above the provenance--Having purchased a number of collections, and attended the Spence sale, bought many tokens at Coin-Ex, and visited many dealers, I currently have a really nice selection of pieces in superb condition. Tokens from the Spence sale will be listed with an *, usually before the selection. All pieces from the sale will be sent to you with all old tickets and envelopes. If you need something not listed, please ask---I have over 1000 in stock, and only 200 on this list They will be offered as space permits in the future. Some shall be put on the web site. Enjoy the list--Bill 18th Century Token Coinage as Catalogued by Dalton and Hamer. BUCKINGHAMSHIRE SLOUGH 22. 1794. Shield of Arms/Rampant Lion. Scarce. Bronzed UNC, nice $185. SLOUGH 27. 1795. Very high grade pieces are thus all quite scarce. As well, many that were in circulation received edge dings and other scrapes, due to their large size. Issued primarily by large industry, they are a reminder of how industry coped with a lack of change as the industrial revolution gained momentum.
