1. CW GARDENING CLUB
Hello again fellow gardeners.
Autumn here again, though there doesn't seem to be as much colour as normal on the trees and
shrubs. This year, everyone seems to have had a bumper crop of fruit.
As the hours of daylight get less, and plants shut down for the winter, now is the time for a
general tidy-up of lawns and borders. Don't be too harsh when cutting back perennial flowers and shrubs,
as the dead foliage can give some protection against severe frosts.
The club has it's next meeting on Wednesday 23rd. November, when our guest speaker is Mrs
Jenny Storey. She takes a whimsical look at life in a talk, with the intriguing title; "AND ANOTHER
THING".
As usual, meetings are held in the Church Hall, starting at 7.30 p.m.
For more info ring Alan on 01522 750349
2. CHERRY WILLINGHAM LADIES GROUP
Next Meeting: 7.30pm November 2nd in the Church Hall.
Our guests are: Claire and Keith Laffin.
The topic is: ‘Not my fawlty’
Refreshments: £1 per evening for members, (non-member £2 per meeting).
New members always welcome!
3. CHERRY WILLINGHAM WI - OCTOBER MEETING
The Church Hall looked at its best for our Harvest meeting. Three new members came, and so did one
welcome visitor. A table was piled high with gifts to be auctioned in aid of the Lincoln Community
larder, and members had set tables in a most attractive manner for our coming Harvest Supper.
Our Quiz team had come second at Harby, only two points behind the winner, so Jane, our President
thanked them warmly. The Rev Sue Bradley had just returned from a meeting at the Denman, the WI
College near Oxford, she encourages WIs to include Science in their annual programmes. She also gave
us advance news about the next fitness challenge, which will involve swimming and walking.
The visit to Denby Potteries had been a success, and our next outing is at the planning stage. Tickets were
on sale for the next meeting of the Lindum Group at Fiskerton Village Hall, Tuesday 25th October @ 7.30
when Gerry Burrows will whisk us back to the Swinging Sixties, tickets £3.50 for a good evening out.
Christine Dawson updated us with news of the progress of our sick members. Her visits are greatly
appreciated when one is not well.
Then came the event of the evening, Robin Leak showed us how to arrange flowers, not just sticking
them in a pot, but in a prizewinning manner. He told us of the varieties he used, the reason for colour
combinations, and his amusing anecdotes reflected the immense pleasure his hobby has given to him and
the many that have envied his ability.
Hazel Cropley and Ann Driver were the joint auctioneers; between them they raised £60 for a most
worthy cause. The Competition, A Favorite Flower was won by 1st Margaret White, 2nd Annette Edgar
and 3rd Cynthia Field.
A reminder, our meeting on Wednesday 9th November is at 7pm to 9.30 pm at CHERRY WILLINGHAM
AND REEPHAM VILLAGE HALL! It is a Friendship evening with 42 members visiting us from
neighboring WIs. Members attend free, Guests £2.50. The entertainment will be by “A Touch of Class”,
and there will be a Buffet Supper. It is good to have plenty to which one can look forward!

4. Parish Council News: Ways for you to get involved!
A chance to make a difference to our village
There is currently a vacancy on the
Parish Council. If you would like to make
a difference to the village, have some time
and skills to offer, are over 18 and have
lived here for more than twelve months,
please consider putting yourself forward to
be co-opted as a Councillor. To apply, you
need to send a letter to the Millennium Hall
for the attention of the Clerk by 16th
November.
The letter should indicate your connection
with the village, any particular interests you
have in the life of the village and detail the
skills and experience you have to offer.
Applications will be considered by the
Council on 21st Nov and all applicants
notified shortly afterwards. If you want to
know more before making a decision to
apply, please contact the Parish Clerk.
The Cherry Willingham News: read on!
The CW News exists to allow village organisations to communicate with residents about their
activities, services and facilities. We know that these organisations value it and that the majority
of residents find it informative. Oversight rests with the Parish Council though most of the credit
goes to Keith Deeley for his hard work as its Editor and we are very grateful to him.
However, the Parish Council has now resolved, for a variety of reasons, that it would be
beneficial for this oversight to be handed over to a 'management committee' composed of
representatives of village organisations and interested local residents. An initial meeting with
representatives from some of the larger village groups has already been held. By the time of
publication, we expect the core of the management team to have been established. However, if
you belong to a village organisation that is not yet involved or would be interested in being part
of this project simply as a resident of Cherry Willingham, please let the Clerk have your contact
details and she will pass them onto the new team.

Heritage Project
Preserving memories of our recent past
The Heritage Committee, led by Parish and District Councillor Anne Welburn, are
trying to gather together all the more recent memories of the village to compliment
the older information already known. It is their intention to collate all the interesting
historical facts about our village into a format suitable for access by all of our
residents.
To help them realise their ambition, they are asking for anyone holding old pictures,
artefacts, letters or historical documents to allow them to be copied/scanned so that
they can be added to the file for posterity. Anyone wishing to help with the Project
will be more than welcome. Please make contact via the Clerk.
Parish Council News: Continued…..
 Hawthorn Road Bus shelter: After extensive consultation the Parish Council
Village Improvement Committee has put on hold the provision of a bus shelter in
the Hawthorn Road area. LCC Highways have advised that the only suitable site
for a shelter is on the North side of Hawthorn Road; this lies within the Reepham
Parish boundary and, therefore, work cannot be undertaken without their
consent. At this time, Reepham Parish Council is awaiting feedback on their new
High Street shelter before considering placement of a second shelter. Cherry
Willingham Parish Council is willing to contribute substantially to a bus shelter in
this area, if and when agreement is reached with both Reepham Parish Council
and Reepham residents.
 Police alerts: Lincolnshire Police have set up an alert email system that will
advise of problems in your local area. You can register to receive notification at
this site: https://member-admin.neighbourhoodalert.co.uk/54/admin-area.
 Meetings of the Council: The next meeting of the Council will be on 21st
November in the Millennium Hall at 7.30 p.m. (Note: The December meeting has
been cancelled for administrative reasons.) Residents are welcome to attend and
raise issues at the commencement of the meeting. However, please note that
Councillors cannot enter into discussion with you at this point and you cannot
speak once the formal business is under way, although you are welcome to stay.
 Contacting us: Cathy Ruston, our Parish Clerk, works part-time but can be
contacted as follows: by phone on 01522 753398 (answerphone available), by
letter to the Millennium Hall, in person at the Hall between 1.30 & 2.30 p.m. on
Tuesdays or 10 to 11 a.m. on Fridays (subject to operational requirements) or by
e-mail to Cathy at cwparishcouncil@gmail.com.

9. CHERRY WILLINGHAM FC.
With only three games played since the last issue, results have not been good.
We visited Wild Life Athletic for an Autumn Cup Group game with a depleted team and suffered the
consequences with a 6-1 defeat. We have to get a result in the next game to stay in the group.
We followed this with 7-0 win over Market Rasen Town in the Innes Cup Competition.
Back to the league, we were disappointed to lose 2-1 at Saxilby after dominating the game but just
could not put the ball in the net.

13. LINCOLN LIONS MAKE HISTORY
Lincoln Lions have presented a cheque for £10,001.50 to the Lincoln Breast Unit at the Lincoln
County Hospital. This was the largest amount that the Lions have raised in a one day project in their
41 year history!
The money was raised from sponsorship from the Three Fifties Cycle Ride which saw people, aged
from 16 to 71 years of age, gamely cycling a 50 mile circuit around Lincoln on May 27th. This was a
magnificent achievement for all on what was a very windy day.
Lincoln Breast Unit will be using the money to purchase vital equipment to allow lypomodelling
procedures for which ladies have to travel much further afield at the moment.
8
Lincoln Lions also have made a major announcement new initiatives that they will be promoting in the
next 12 months. This announcement covered environmental projects, key fundraising events, an
emphasis on new youth initiatives and the launch of the Three Twenties Cycle Challenge!
The Three Twenties Cycle Challenge will see Senior School students, aged between 11 and 18,
cycling 20 miles around a special course inside RAF Scampton, each raising at least £20 in
sponsorship for teenage Cancer Trust. It is hoped that each of the schools in around Lincoln will
nominate at least 20 students to take part. It is envisaged that the event will be held on April 29, 2012.

another’s life.

23. CHERRY WILLINGHAM POND – PRESS RELEASE
History and the Great Crested Newt meet in Cherry Willingham
A medieval carp pond is the focus of an exciting project being undertaken by the Parish
Council and local residents to preserve part of the village’s heritage which is the habitat of a
colony of the protected great crested newt. Over the last two years the pond and its
surrounds have been sensitively restored for the benefit of local wildlife and residents.
Now, with the help of a grant of £15,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), pupils at the
village’s schools will work with residents to research more of the history of the village, to
ensure that residents have the opportunity to learn about their heritage, and to promote
the biodiversity of the area for future generations to enjoy.
The pond is all that remains of a once extensive network of ancient carp ponds. It is in an
archaeologically and historically important area of village history as the grass surrounds
cover some Saxon remains while the ponds were part of medieval church life. Excavations in
1980 located evidence of occupation from the 5th to the 12th centuries including a sunken hut,
drainage gullies, fences and an iron-smelting furnace.
The Doomsday survey of 1086 states in the Gullingham Lawress, “There is a church and a
priest, two fisheries of 32p and forty acre of meadow. Value £5.0.4p” Since then the ponds
have been mentioned in Whites Directory 1872, Nikolaus Prevsner’s book on Lincolnshire
Villages and P.L. Everson’s archaeological findings in 1991. The manor, opposite the Church
was owned by the Marmion family in the 15th century with the two ponds shown on the Tithe
Map with the field name of Cross Homestead.
Mr Martin Snee, Deputy Head at Cherry Willingham Community School, commented, “We
welcome this exciting project which will engage our students in their local history and
ecology and will build on work undertaken by them earlier in the year.”
Emma Sayer, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund East Midlands, said, “We at HLF are delighted
to be able to give the project at Cherry Willingham our support. By giving young people from
across the community the chance to explore and learn about their local history, and the
impact this has had on our land and biodiversity, we can help ensure that our natural
environment is preserved for future generations to enjoy.”

CHURCH ROOF NEWS FROM CHERRY WILLINGHAM
It would be easy to think that since the extensive scaffolding went up around Cherry
Willingham Church that nothing much has been happening. However, that’s not the position
so we hope that the following will give you an indication of the progress so far.
First of all it’s worth emphasizing that the Church building is Grade I listed, hence there are a
number of other parties involved in overseeing the work, English Heritage and the Georgian
Society being just two! Every stage of the work is checked by architects before the
conservation workers can proceed with the next stage. It’s also worth emphasising that
financially this is a huge project, and has not been helped by the Government changing its
rules on VAT reclaim at the point that we signed the contracts.
Despite all of this, around 95% of the work to the roof on the nave and chancel is complete.
This has involved removing the covering, taking out wood infested by death watch beetle
and replacing it. New gutters have been put in, joists replaced or pieced and spliced in
where required. New wall plates have been inserted.
One of the hold ups in the work has been the discovery that the Cupola (housing the bell)
was much more damaged than expected and also that it ‘wobbled’ when its surroundings
were removed. The next step then was to await a visit from a structural surveyor and his
report. It was also riddled with rot—wet and dry- and death watch beetle, so all of the eight
supporting post now need to be replaced. They will be prepared (joints measured and cut)
in the contractor’s workshop, as was any other woodwork that was necessary, and then
brought to the church to be fitted. In order to do this the roof of the cupola –which is all
sound—will have to be lifted off.
In addition to this the drainage needs to be dealt with – that will happen in the spring when
we hope that we will be through the worst of the winter weather. All in all this is a big job
and to be honest it’s unlikely that we will get the Church building back to celebrate
Christmas in it. However, we trust that when all of this is done, we will have a roof that will
last another 200 years!
….. and news from GREETWELL
the work continues at Greetwell to improve the facilities in and around the church. In the
last two years, the roof has been retiled, pew cushions replaced, an Eco Loo put in and the
next stage begins in November when the church is redecorated, which means that the
building will be out of action for about 6 weeks, but, we trust, open to celebrate on
Christmas Day.

29. FORGET-ME-NOT-CLUB NEWS.
It was Harvest time for the Forget-me-Not Club at the beginning of October. Rev. Sue
Bradley conducted a short service of thanksgiving and we sang a couple of appropriate
hymns. Members were very generous and the table was laden with gifts of fruit and
vegetables. Mr. Roy Percy auctioned each item and the proceeds, for club funds, amounted to
£26.50. In addition we received £75.00 from 3 generous donations from members. Instead of
the usual biscuits with our cup of tea we were treated to cake and chocolates to celebrate the
birthdays of three of our members.
Our recent annual coffee morning, which we held in the Church Hall, was a great success and
raised the grand sum of £259. The chairman thanked all who helped in any way.
At our next meeting we will welcome an old friend, Mr. Paul Hill.
Everyone is welcome to join us at our meetings on the first and third Thursday in the month,
at 2pm in the Church Hall.

35. REEPHAM CRICKET CLUB _- OCTOBER 2011
The summer cricket season has, sadly, now drawn to a close. Quite ironic, wasn’t it, that the
hottest and most settled week of weather was the week after we had finished!
We look back and celebrate a good season again – good in that we enjoyed our cricket
and our times together. We always have stories to tell at the end of a season and it is rarely to
do with winning a match, more often to do with some odd incident that occurred. We like to
think that we don’t take ourselves too seriously, although we still do like to win.
Our final few matches of the season were all about our Sunday team fighting against
relegation and staying in Division 3. The great news is that we managed to do this, but only
just – by 1 point. We went into the last match needing 4 points out of a maximum of 20 to
stay in the division, against our local rivals Cherry Willingham. The match started superbly
for us with one of our young star bowlers, Ben Housam, taking a wicket with the first ball of
the match. Then it became a bit of a struggle, but we finally managed to take a ninth wicket,
thanks to James Bradford – another young star bowler – and claimed our vital fourth point.
Our batting was nothing to report about really so I won’t, but suffice to say that we secured
our place in the division. Well done young stars and older ones who played, caught catches
and fielded well!
So the season has finished – but cricket continues for us as we seek to have monthly nets
and the indoor team begin their quest for honours in October.
I will do a final report in the next issue, when I will report on our awards evening, this
year combined with a milestone for the club as we celebrate our 80th anniversary.
Andy Housam
Reepham Cricket Club Secretary
36. CHERRY TREE CHAMPS
The Domino Team, captained by John Morton, ended a successful summer season as Team
Knockout Champions of the Lincoln Domino League by defeating ‘The Brown Cow’ in
the final.
The Team: John Morton (Capt.) , Brian Birdsall, Hope Irvine, Eric Brocklesby, Jim Blyth,
Kath Brocklesby, Billy Wragg, Ron Green and Mark Wilkins.
Jim Blyth and Eric Brocklesby also emerged as the Pairs Champions defeating a pair from
the ‘Royal Oak, Collingham.
After lingering in the bottom half of the league for most of the season, four good wins at the
end of the season gave the team a creditable third place finish.

38. CHERRY WILLINGHAM WEBSITE
Cherry Willingham Website - cherrywillingham.org.uk - Links to Village Organisations
The original village website was conceived and built during the mid 90's with the intention
of providing information to both village residents and those further afield. Indeed we had
lots of comments from “ex-Cherry Willinghamites” from all over the world who were
pleased to see Cherry on the Web. However, the Parish Council has since developed a
comprehensive website and several of the organisations that had pages on the original site
now have their own website or Facebook pages. Consequently the need for a village one
has declined. The decision has been taken, therefore, to slim down the
cherrywilligham.org.uk site to a simple page that lists the web links to village organisations.
This page will, however, significantly improve the chances of search engines placing the
linked pages on the first page of hits when someone is searching for news of the village and
its activities. So……………..
Village organisations - To make sure your entry is correct please email the link you would
like us to insert to barry.robinson2@ntlworld.com. This service is free of charge to
voluntary groups. I suggest that all organisations, whether or not they have their own sites,
make sure their basic details are also included on the Parish Council site. You can do this by
emailing them to the Parish Council webmaster anne.welburn@btinternet.com.
Local Businesses - If you wish to be included then there will be a small charge. Please email
webmaster@cherrywillingham.org.uk with your details. Alternatively, if any business (or
voluntary organisation for that matter) would like a website or have their existing one re-
20
designed, I can recommend www.BowhunterWebsites.co.uk (contact
webmaster@bowhunter.co.uk tel: 01507 466436) who has hosted and, in recent years, also
managed the village website and who is kindly continuing to host the “umbrella” page free
of charge.
Finally I would like to thank the Methodist Church and the Parish Council for their funding
contributions over the years.
Barry Robinson
