The scheme generally supports institutions in establishing new, or enhancing existing, specialist research training provision for doctoral students in the arts and humanities, involving other institutions. The aim of the student-led initiative category is to support the establishment of innovative collaborative research training programmes, originated by and run for postgraduate doctoral students. Awards are worth up to £2,000 each. Eligible types of activities under this call include, but are not limited to: conferences, which must be student-led and student organised; career development initiatives; networks or research forums; journals or on-line web resources; on-line video resources; roundtable events to discuss career pathways and career development issues; showcase/demonstration events to research to local or national employers, government bodies, community organisations, media, primary and secondary educational pupils, etc. knowledge transfer activities, involving interaction between students and non-academic organisations. Applications can be made in this scheme by postgraduate students attending a nationally funded higher education institutions in supervisor. It is not necessary for applicants to collaborate with students at other HEIs in the organisation of the proposed initiative, although this may be appropriate for some programmes, but doctoral students from a range of institutions should be invited to participate. http://www.ahrc.ac.uk/university_staff/postgrad/collaborative_research_training_Scheme.asp BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY Feldman graduate fellowship in sustainable international development Deadline: 31 March 2009 Next due Mar 10 The Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University invites applications for the Feldman graduate fellowship in sustainable international development. The fellowship will be awarded to an early to mid-level career development professional interested in the field of integrated conservation and development. Fellows will participate in an interdisciplinary study of development and project management emphasizing poverty reduction, gender, human rights, and biodiversity conservation. The fellow will complete a year-in-residence and then work at a field conservation site during the second year of the program. The fellowship includes full tuition, fees, airfare and living expenses for the year-in-residence at Brandeis, and airfare and all university fees for the second year fieldwork. The British Federation of Women Graduates invites applications for its Theodora Bosanquet bursary. This bursary supports women graduates whose research in history or English literature requires the use of libraries, archives or other scholarly resources in London. The bursary provides accommodation in a hall of residence in central London for up to four weeks between mid June and mid September. The award is open to women scholars and postgraduate students worldwide. http://www.ffwg.org.uk BRITISH GEOMORPHOLOGICAL RESEARCH GROUP Postgraduate research grants Closing dates: 31 March and 30 September annually The British Geomorphological Research Group announces its postgraduate research grants. These funds are available to postgraduate members registered for a higher research degree. They are primarily intended to support students who do not receive full funding for their degree or where an additional opportunity to add value to an existing MPhil/PhD programme has arisen. The proposal should be relevant to BT business. The scheme is open to lecturers, professors and PhD qualified research students working in fields relevant to a global IT, communications and networking services company. There is an honorarium payment of £4,500 after the fellowship is completed. This award recognises outstanding contributions to psychological knowledge made by postgraduate students whilst carrying out research for their doctoral degrees in psychology. Nominees must have received their doctorate no longer than three years ago. The nominated articles must have been published in refereed journals or be in press. These are designed for students based in the UK working on a Middle Eastern studies topic. The available fund of £1,000 will either be given as a single award or divided into a maximum of three awards. Eligible applicants are research students of any nationality registered in a UK institution. Research and fieldwork are supported by the fund. Applicants must be subscribers to the association within the UK concessionary or the UK lower payment category. Daiwa Scholarships offer young and talented UK citizens with strong leadership potential, the opportunity to acquire Japanese language skills, and to access expertise and knowledge relevant to their career goals. No previous experience of Japan or Japanese is necessary. Daiwa Scholarships are provided by the Foundation to encourage better understanding between both countries. Candidates must be British citizens between 21 and 35 years of age. The following awards are available: long term scholarships cover a whole academic year and are best suited for students wishing to study for a master 1 or a master 2 in a French university or grande école. Scholars receive a maintenance award of £8,000 (in Paris) per year or £7,500 (outside Paris) per year and a maximum contribution of £3,000 per year towards the payment of tuition fees. Please note that the scholarship is for one year only and is not renewable. short term scholarships cover a period of three to six months to carry out doctorate or postdoctorate research in a French research institution or laboratory. To be eligible, candidates must be of British nationality and have an excellent track record illustrating achievements, both academically and otherwise. Language skills are as follows: arts and humanities students must have a good command of French. Science, medicine and engineering students must have a working or good command of French is a plus, but it is not a mandatory requirement. http://www.ambafrance-uk.org/Entente-cordiale-scholarships.html ESCALATE – EDUCATION SUBJECT CENTRE Student Grant Funding 2009 Deadline 26 March 2009 The funding is to enable you to work with fellow students and staff, in engaging and responding to the learning, teaching and training issues of concern to you, eg. to organise a regional workshop or seminar series around your research interests, or to design a mini-research project into some aspect of learning and teaching. Funding is available from £250 to a maximum of £2000. Projects that address one of the following themes: Globalisation, Higher Education Policy, e-Learning, Vocationalism, Widening Participation, Employability, Student Perspectives, Pedagogy and Pedagogic Research, Race and Ethnicity or Academic Activism are most likely to be funded, but other themes may be proposed. EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION OF EXPERIMENTAL SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY Postgraduate and postdoctoral travel grants Deadline 31 March, 30 June, 30 September, and 30 December The European Association of Experimental Social Psychology invites applications for its postgraduate travel bursaries. These bursaries are intended to support: •short visits of postgraduate or postdoctoral students to departments elsewhere in the world in order to conduct new research, complete ongoing projects, or undergo training in a particular methodology or technology; •participation of postgraduate or postdoctoral students in meetings, conferences or summer schools (co)sponsored by EAESP. The applications are open to postgraduate members of the association currently registered for a PhD at a European university and full members who have completed their PhD within 36 months prior to their application. The awards pay for travel to and maintenance at another institution. Eligible researchers must be registered for a PhD or must be postdoctoral scientists who received their PhD within the previous five years. The applicant's home institution must be within the UK. Individual grants will be for a maximum of £1,200, with up to £100 extra available for actual costs incurred in visiting an institution. http://www.eps.ac.uk/grants/studyvis.html Grindley grants No deadline These are to finance travel to academic conferences relevant to the applicant’s work and the society’s interests. Grants are limited to £500. Applicants must be registered for a higher degree and be within four years of initial registration, or postdoctoral workers within two years of having received their doctorate, or retired EPS members. Non-members should be sponsored by a member. Travel under this award must originate from, or be destined to, the UK. These support postgraduates undertaking research projects about Canada as part of their masters, PhD, or other degree at a UK university. Awards are for up to £750 each and cover the cost of a study visit to Canada. Applicants must be British citizens and passport holders.http://www.canadian-studies-uk.org/ FRENCH ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN AFFDU grants Deadline: 31 March 2009 The French Association of University Women invites applications for its AFFDU grants. AFFDU grants support women in any field of study to undertake a period of doctoral thesis research or postdoctoral research in France for non-French students and outside France for French students. The following grants are offered: • • • • • • • • AFFDU award (two to three awards of 1,000 euros to 1,500 euros); Dorothy Leet award (two to three awards of 1,000 euros to 1,500 euros) for a franco-American project; Monique Fouet award (one award of 1,000 euros to 1,500 euros) for a postgraduate student in politics; Elsevier award (1,000 euros) for a mathematics student; Furnestin award (1,000 euros) for a student in animal or marine biology; women and finance award (1,000 euros) for a student in economic and financial studies; Huguette Delavault award (1,000 euros to 1,200 euros) for studies in the sciences or feminist studies; women and the Mediterranean award (1,500 euros) for an Arab student who is a native of the near east. Applicants must be under 40 years of age and must be members of AFFDU or the corresponding affiliate association in their native country. http://www.affdu.fr/actions-venir.php FULBRIGHT COMMISSION Postgraduate Student Awards Deadline 31 May 2009 Each year between 10 and 16 awards are offered to UK citizens for the first year of postgraduate or doctoral study in any subject, at any accredited US institution. Successful candidates will work with the Fulbright Commission and the Institute of International Education (IIE) to find the right course and department for them. The Commission also offers specific awards for Journalism, Film, an MBA at Harvard or a PhD in Science or Technology. 6 Grants are for up to $40,000 paid in instalments directly to the grantee, intended as a contribution towards the first year of tuition fees and general maintenance costs whilst in the US. University application and entrance exam fees, limited sickness and accident benefit coverage, visa sponsorship and participation in a number of Fulbright Scholar events are also included. Candidates must be UK citizens (resident anywhere), hold or expect to obtain a minimum 2:1 undergraduate degree or the equivalent prior to your anticipated enrolment with a US university. Preference will be given to those who do not have extensive, recent experience in the US (6 months). The Foundation focuses on biological, chemical, and botanical science students/researchers, and exceptional candidates from language, music, and art. In recognition of the importance of cross-cultural exchange in today's global society, we also aim to deepen understanding between Japan and the rest of the world. Grants will be awarded to candidates based in or studying in the United Kingdom or Japan, although applicants from other countries may be considered. Candidates from the biological, chemical and botanical sciences, and exceptional candidates from language, music and art are invited to apply. These enable academics in Britain and Ireland to carry out research in Germany for one to six months, commencing between July and December 2008. The grants are open to PhD students who have completed at least one year's research, postdoctoral research workers, and lecturers at the start of their university career. The grant comprises a monthly allowance of 1,000 euros, an initial extra payment towards travel expenses, and an accident/personal liability insurance policy for the duration of the visit. http://london.daad.de/html/mainframe.html?header=header.html&headerContent=05Funding/scholarDHeader. html&content=05Funding/scholarD.html&menu=funding Research Grants for PhD Students & Junior Scholars (7-10 months) Deadline 16 February 2009 This scholarship provides funds for doctoral or post-doctoral students to study and/or conduct research at any German university, research institute, music academy or art college for a total duration of seven to ten months. The scholarship is tenable between 1 October 2009 and 31 July 2010. All applicants, including graduates of German, must take a German language test at a Goethe Institute or with a DAAD Lektor. The test date at the Goethe Institute London is: 2 February 2009, 3pm. The language test is intended to indicate the level of proficiency in the German language and there is no specific pass mark. Only candidates who speak no German at all are exempt. The DAAD expects applicants to make their own contacts with and applications to the German institutions of higher education or research. Evidence of contact, if possible in the form of a provisional letter from a specific supervisor, should be submitted with your DAAD application forms. This programme aims to encourage women to excel in computing and technology and become active role models and leaders. Applications are open to female students entering their final year of a bachelor’s degree, or enrolled in an a master’s or a PhD programme in 2009-2010. Candidates must: • be enrolled at a university in Europe. Citizens, permanent residents, and international students are eligible to apply; • be studying computer science, computer engineering, informatics, or a closely related technical field; • maintain an excellent academic record (eg a first class honours degree). The scholarship recipients will each receive a 5,000 euros (or equivalent) scholarship for the 2009-2010 academic year. anitaborgscholars.europe@google.com INSTITUTE OF EUROPEAN HISTORY Research Fellowships in European History Deadline 15 February 2009 The Institute of European History will be awarding fellowships for a research stay in Mainz beginning in June 2009 (at the earliest). Funding ranges from 6 months up to two years. The research fellowship programme combines research, training and international networking. Appointed fellows will work on their PhD thesis and will live and work at the Institute in Mainz. Postdoctoral projects are also welcome. Applicants must have a solid knowledge of German so as to be able to participate in the discussions at the Institute. According to their special fields and interests, they are invited to participate in many academic activities of the Institute – organizing conferences, editing publications and newsletters, structuring online-databases and administering research funding. Applications for the Institute’s research units are particularly welcome. Fellows will get the chance to play an active role in the research unit they are working in. These units are: 1. Grants will contribute towards travel costs to assist postgraduate students in making visits to archives and other site-visits away from their home institution. Applications may also be made for a contribution towards other research expenses, such as photocopying or microfilming, where necessary. The awards are open to students registered for a research degree with any UK institution of higher education, usually in their second or third year. Preference will be given to members of the society. These assist postgraduate students in attending approved short-term training courses designed to improve skills in historical research, or conferences or other meetings of relevance to a student's research. Applicants should normally be registered for a research degree at a UK higher education institution. The society will also consider applications from individuals who have completed doctoral dissertations within the last two years and who are not in full-time employment. These fellowships are designed for members of national affiliates of the International Federation of University Women. This scheme supports independent research or advanced study at a postgraduate level at an appropriate institution in Japan. Funding of 500,000 yen to 1 million yen is available for periods of at least three months. http://www.ifuw.org/fellowships/japan.shtml LADY DAVIS FELLOWSHIP TRUST Doctoral fellowships Deadline 28 February 2009 (next due 28 February 2010) These allow students enrolled in recognised doctoral programs at universities outside Israel to spend a period of nine to 12 months at Hebrew University in Israel. The stipend is worth ILS3,814 per month and the Trust will pay for a return flight from the fellow's country of origin to Israel.. The selection and nomination of students is the responsibility of the arts training organisation concerned, their nomination being based upon a combination of outstanding talent, potential and their financial need. This scheme has been running successfully for over fifteen years and has supported many postgraduate research activities. Typical awards are to support field expeditions, geological surveys, coring activities, visits to laboratories, purchase of essential field equipment and laboratory analyses. Please note that we are not able to accept applications for radiocarbon dates. These awards are aimed at researchers studying for higher degrees and preference will be given to those who have no source of fieldwork funding or whose access to such funds is limited. To be eligible for the scheme you must have been a QRA member for at least 6 months by the time of application and must not hold a doctoral degree or a tenured academic position. A letter of support from the applicant’s PhD supervisor must accompany the application. Grants are normally for sums up to £600. The award is designed to provide support for field-based research in the subject of geology and related sciences in the fields of: (i) Cenozoic stratigraphy, palaeoenvironments and chronology in relation to hominid evolution; and (ii) British Quaternary stratigraphy, palaeoenvironments and geomorphology.
