VRI Data Issues and Warts Not Sufficiently Restocked - NSR Not Sufficiently Restocked or NSR is a code found under the attribute Non Forest Descriptor. This is a FIP (Forest Inventory Planning data model) classification based attribute only, and is retained for the purposes of business transition from FIP to Vegetation Inventory Although NSR code is carried in the VRI data model, it is no longer collected or assigned during an update or a VRI inventory. However, the old F records (identified by Inventory –Standard = “F”) still contains this code. NSR in the inventory was collected until 1998. Any NSR is likely to be at least 8 years old and is possibly free growing at this point. There are 2 attribute fields which describes the forest cover type, whether it is capable of supporting or not supporting commercial forests. The Non-Forest Descriptor is distinctly different from the Non-Productive Descriptor found in the Polygon Record: The Non-Forest Descriptor indicates that the forest cover polygon is potentially productive (NC, NCBR, NSR), but is not currently supporting commercial forests. It is also used to determine potential areas for silviculture treatment and to determine the net land base for Timber Supply Analyses.; Non-Productive Descriptor indicates that the stand is not capable of supporting commercial forests (A, R, GR, AF, NPBR, NP, Swamp, etc. – for a comprehensive list, refer to vri data dictionary http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/hts/vridata/standards/index.html). The non-forest descriptor is tied to the polygon table, and the non-productive descriptor is tied to the layer table. To determine the polygon status of NSR, it is recommended you use the RESULTS tables (Whse_Forest_Vegetation.Reslt_Forest_cover.Stocking_Status_Code). It is more current and is the original source.
