Dear Member You are cordially invited to the 17th Annual General Meeting of SESSA to be held on Thursday 15th May 2008 at 11.00 at City University, Northampton Square, London EC1V in room 3C main building. There had been some issues which had arisen as a result of this and in particular the matter of coin tossing to decide the winner of some matches. AGREED: This matter should be referred to the SESSA Committee for resolution and decision 3 Minutes of 2005/2006 AGM The minutes were agreed as a true record and there were no matters arising. 4 General Secretary’s Report The year started off in the usual manner with 8 teams withdrawing from the nine Divisions. We only managed to replace one of those. Unfortunately one Team withdrew from Division Two East. This left only four teams in the Division giving them only six League Fixtures. Division Two South had two Teams withdraw. Again they only had six League games. The outcome of the Divisions was amazing as five of the nine Divisions finished with the top two Teams finishing on the same points. In four of the five cases, the Team being shown top on the website with the better Goal Difference, were in fact Runners Up. This is because our rules state that “If two Teams are equal on Points the first deciding factor is the result between the two Teams”. In four of the cases the Runners Up had beaten the Team at the top in the League game. As a result were the champions. It still does concern the committee that there are a number of teams that play in other competitions that cause a disruption to the SESSA League fixtures. The Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst are one of those teams who have not completed their League fixtures for the last two years. As a result it is proposed not to accept them into our League next season. It is not fair to our students who just want to play their football from week to week. The Cup was a major disappointment. We start late in order to allow the BUSA Teams to participate in the competitions. We do struggle to get all the Rounds in on time if the weather is bad. This year the weather for the 1st and 2nd Rounds was awful. I did suggest that we abandon the Cup this year when 36 of the 96 1st & 2nd Round of the Cup and 1st Round of the Plate went to the Toss of a Coin. To me it was a bit of a farce as so many good teams went out on the Toss of a Coin. However, Finals Day did go ahead as planned on the 25th April, and was extremely successful, thanks to Bob Glozier’s organisation. There were a couple hic-ups when Lewisham turned up late for their Challenge Plate Final, so delaying the start by 15 minutes. Hackney Community College turned up 30 minutes after the scheduled Kick Off time for their Regional Cup Final. We were going to award the game to the University of Greenwich, but to their credit they wanted to play. It was cut down to 35 minutes each way with Greenwich winning 3-2. We will have to put into place some sort of rule to penalise Teams that are late to avoid this happening again. The Women’s 6 a-side League, pre-christmas, was excellent with 22 entries. This was split into two Groups of 11, attending on alternate weeks. The top 3 in each Group then had a Play-Off in December, with Berkshire College of Agriculture winning for the second year running. The Runners Up this time were London Leisure College. As last year the post Christmas 6 a-side was disappointing. Attendance was well down and many Wednesdays cancelled. Thanks must go to Stella Sipple, once again, for providing us with the venue and Referees for the 6 a-side. Without her valuable contribution we would be struggling. The Women’s 11 a-side Cup had 12 entries. This is the highest so far. Unfortunately after the Groups had been formed we had three withdraw. However all Teams had a minimum of two games with London Leisure beating Bedford College in the Final at Fords on 25th April. The committee met to discuss League business on two occasions in the season. Thanks to Seb, Stella and Bob for their input and to Rowan for his input and providing the facility for the meetings. I must also thank Claire, at Anglia Ruskin (Chelmsford), for all her help in putting together the Handbook. It is an arduous task in the summer, but she does a fantastic job. Thanks Claire. I am sorry that I cannot attend the AGM but I am willing to continue my role as Secretary, if re-elected. 5 Financial Statement The finances of the SESSA Football are incorporated into the main SESSA accounts and were dealt with under the SESSA AGM agenda item 6 Results Secretary’s Report League There were many withdrawals and Ken Pearce was able to replace most teams with the exception of Div 5 East which had only 5 teams. Even when the season started there were some withdrawals which again meant less matches played. In the main teams organisers were able to keep in touch with each other and report results. There were still a few teams who did not communicate. These teams were sent fines and their entry will cost more next season when their fines are added to their entry fee. This is not efficient but should in the long run either bring down costs for the efficient teams or by contributing to SESSA stop annual fees being raised. £230 was raised this way this year. I feel that this should be repeated and inefficient teams will then be able to subsidize efficient teams. Most teams were incredibly excellent and many results were on the internet by Wednesday evening. The table shows how many results were input by teams, matches awarded or Void (Void means no result = no points) Div Prem South Matches 36 Put onto ‘net Awarded 18 3 Void 5 Prem East Prem North One North One South One East 36 28 27 21 36 20 21 11 15 13 3 3 3 1 5 1 Two North Two South Two East 36 24 12 20 19 10 6 3 1 1 4 0 3 Poor teams Lewisham RMAS Hackney CC Newham FE Some inefficient teams were refused entry into the cup competitions. Congratulations to the many teams who managed to play contact opponents, report results and enjoyed the league competition. My Thanks go to the efficient team organisers who make my job easy and to Ken Pearce who telephones around to make sure results are reported and matched rescheduled. 7 Cup Secretary’s Report There was a record entry by teams from outside SESSA leagues. Entry was again restricted to 32 teams for each Cup, so that meant some league teams were disappointed. 2006-07 Cup and Plate Women’s Challenge Bedford College 1 Portsmouth Uni 2 Bedford College 2 Lewisham College 2 Bedford College London Leisure 2 0 3 4 0 7 Intermediate Portsmouth Uni 5 TVU 2 NEWVIC Barnfield College 3 7 3+6 3+7 Regional Hackney Com. Col. Greenwich Uni 2 Anglia Cambs 1 Middx Uni 4 The first round was postponed for a week due to the poor weather. Remember it did not stop raining in February and early March. This meant that with cup matches being played each week there were too many games decided on my desk with the toss of a coin, as follows, Challenge Intermediate Regional Cup 8 of 31 7 of 31 14 of 31 Plate 7 of 15 5 of 14 4 of 14 Bowl/Spoon 1 of 10 2 of 6 3 of 10 This means that of 31 matches in the Challenge Cup 8 were decided either by the toss of a coin or awarded because a team could not/would not play = nearly one third of all matches. If anyone has a better system please get in touch/ I do not like this, but the weather has been particularly poor for three weeks and decisions had to be made. Progress to the finals was subsequently straight forward. This year teams had to apply to progress to the Bowl and Spoon so there were less games awarded than last year. This change was a success. The finals themselves were played in good spirit and there were mainly very close matches. My thanks go to Ken Pearce, the Officials and ground staff on the day. My congratulations to most of the teams who showed discipline and I hope enjoyed the day, win or lose. One problem was two teams who could not get there in time. I was close to awarding a Cup Final for the first time ever. If it had not been for the opposition wanting to play I would have cancelled one final and awarded the game to a team who was kept waiting for an hour before they were able to play! Thanks to the majority of teams and organisers who keep in touch and have made the cup competitions a success and have enjoyed this years competition. 2 3 2 1 8 Sixes Report Another good day at Taplow Utd FC. 18 teams competed for the cup with University of Herts ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams reaching the final. The standard of play was high and we had a good mix of teams with the smaller colleges competing against the larger universities. Well done to Uxbridge College and Enfield College who reached the semi-finals. I would like to express my thanks to the groundsman who once again produced an excellent playing surface. 9 Election of Officers for 2007/2008 President: To be agreed General Secretary: Ken Pearce Results Secretary: Bob Glozier Competition Secretary: Bob Glozier 10 Rule Changes AGREED and addition to Rule 22 b) v) Each Cup will be restricted to a maximum of 32 Teams. Priority will be given to teams playing in the SESSA League providing that they have fulfilled the obligations in d). 11 Acceptance of proposed system and dates for 2007/2008 In view of many Schools and Colleges moving to 6 week terms, the Secretary was asked to take particular account of term dates when setting next year’s fixtures 12 Any Other Business The Chairman expressed the Association’s sincere thanks to Messrs Pearce and Glozier for another fine year. Netball League AGM 13 Clubs Present and Apologies for Absence As above 14 Organiser’s Report and arrangements for 2007/8 Initial entries to the league were 36 which once the season began was reduced to 31. This meant that more teams than ever were playing SESSA Netball which is the most important thing. A few things did concern me, in particular the number of walkovers and un-played games. This distorted the league and for purposes of marketing information for some institutions. The walkover issue is something we tried to address over the years but is one that constantly seems to be an immoveable barrier. In terms of un-played games there is no excuse. Teams have their fixtures and I am probably at fault for allowing teams to carry games after Christmas. Having analysed the website there is no significant pattern. I am mindful that it is the same institutions who concede walkovers and have games un-played but it is their choice to enter the competition, and if in the end they play half their games then they fulfil the Sessa ethos of students’ playing any sport. It was agreed to change the leagues for next year according to level and region. Games must have two umpires – in the cups as well as the leagues. Teams withdrawing from the league cannot play in the Cup. Team lists should be provided. The top three teams from each league (should they enter 07/08) will form a premier division. The second two leagues would be based geographically. This does put pressure on travelling from the premier league however I believe it will make it more competitive. On the cup side of the competition this is growing I am extremely pleased with the number of non-sessa league teams competing in this competition. We had 47 teams enter this competition which is a further increase on our 2005/06 numbers. I expect this to grow as you will see from the results below the games in the latter stages of the competition match up. However, in the earlier rounds the results are quite distorted. I have recommended at the Netball AGM a structure that runs along the lines of the football competition. Challenge/Intermediate & Regional. Obviously we do not have the same numbers as the football competition and it would have to be tailored to suit our needs, however I think it would make the competition more competitive in all rounds of the competition. I would like to thank Louisa Stormont (BCUC) and Stella Sipple (Middlesex) who have kept me sane through these gruelling 8 months of competition. Also I would like to thank SUUG (my long suffering employer!!) for allowing me to continue running this competition on your behalf. I would like to also thank all the officials, coaches and players of your teams their commitment to your institution makes this competition work. I look forward to more teams entering this competition next year SESSA AGM including Competitions Meeting 14 Apologies for Absence and Members present As above 15 Chairman's Address Once again SESSA has come through another successful year, with the total mechanism better than the sum of its parts. Without volunteers organising, and without the members playing and enjoying it, the thing doesn’t work. Despite the changes in sport going on around us, there is definitely a place for SESSA, but we must adapt if we want to carry on the mission to deliver sport for all. Players must commit to playing at the right level. We have an opportunity to increase competition after Christmas with others finishing. There is less time and budget generally for student sport, and one-day competitions in particular take a lot of organising. Nevertheless the cycle continues and the Olympics might have an effect. We will continue to be flexible and allow BUSA, British Colleges and Schools to enter SESSA competitions. The leagues will not be affected by this ruling. They must continue and be strong. Special thanks to: Sab Ventre for becoming a new organiser and taking over the Rugby The ‘bastions’ at Middlesex for organising and arranging venues Rachel Rogers for the outstanding improvement in Netball organisation Billy Jawandha for continuing to run Basketball and Football 6’s despite having a job outside of student sport nowadays Claire Markwell for managing the SESSA Office at ARU There was a Rugby League event for the first time this year, which wasn’t very successful, but at least we tried. Unfortunately, the Cricket was washed out, and the 40th Anniversary Golf Tournament was lost through a remarkable lack of entries. It seems that SESSA is now running less and less competitions, but we are always open to new ideas and next year we plan to run a Badminton tournament and to resurrect the SESSA Athletics with the help of Middlesex University and the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority. 16 The Minutes of the 15th Competitions Meeting were agreed as a correct record. Organisers Review of 2006-2007 if not already dealt with 17 Basketball - Report 17.1 This season ran with 2 men’s leagues (Premier and Div 1) and one women’s league. The entry for the women’s league was disappointing with only 4 teams competing out of an original entry of 8. The league was won by Hackney Community College Shoreditch, who completed a league and cup double by defeating London Southbank University in the final. The mens leagues had higher numbers entered (originally 12 for each), however we ended up with 8 teams competing in the Premier division, and 7 in division 1. West Thames College were Premier division league winners, with Bedford College taking division 1. London Southbank University won the mens cup defeating Hackney Community College Shoreditch in a close final. The cup competitions are both well supported with the standard being raised by the BUSA teams, but it is still nice to see our own sides giving them a run for their money (well done to Community College Shoreditch). I would also like to thank Chris Morris from Community College Shoreditch for once again providing an excellent venue for the cup finals, and also for finding the elusive umpires. SESSA Basketball Cup Final Results: HCCA Women 92 v 32 LSBU HCCA Men 74 v 77 LSBU (after OT....64/64 in regulation time) The Men's Final was a fantastically tense affair in which neither side led by more than 6pts any time in the match. 17.2 2007/8 Continue as before 18 Hockey – Report 18.1 Men’s League It was disappointing to end up with only 2 entries. Winners were University of Westminster with City runners up. Womens League Again dissapointing to get whittled down to 3 but Westminster won again with Writtle coming runners up. Mixed Hockey A few issues with fixtures being played on time and walkovers but a very strong turnout as usual with 14 teams competing. The winners by 1 point in the end were Middlesex but they were pressed all the way by runners up Greenwich (non pub team!) Cups. Mixed Cup was won 2-1 by Brunel with Kingston as runners up. Mixed Plate was won 5-4 by Portsmouth with Middlesex as runners up. Both extremely close matches and it was a shame someone had to lose. Women’s Cup was won by Kingston 2-0 Women’s plate was won by Middlesex 2-1 with Bucks as runners up. Men’s Cup was won at a canter by Portsmouth 8-1 with Greenwich as runners up. Mens plate was won by Herts 6-2 with Portsmouth as runners up. 18.2 2007/8 Planning on organising a 6s tournament along the lines of Women’s Football to encourage more Hockey. Members entering SESSA competitions should declare their levels to aid fair sport. 19 Rugby – Report 19.1 Final League Table University College Chichester Men’s 1s SESSA College of Law 1st XV University of Portsmouth 1st XV SESSA University of Westminster 1st XV SESSA City University London Men’s 1s SESSA Thames Valley University 1st XV SESSA Writtle College Men’s 1s SESSA Barnfield College 1st XV Berkshire College of Agriculture Rugby Universities at Medway 1st XV 27pts 23 21 21 21 17 12 10 7 -6 The league season proved to be highly successful this year and all teams managed to play at least 70% of their games. In total there was 45 games played with only 7 walkovers given to teams. University College Chichester won the league on the last day of the season with a close 7-0 win over College of Law. This has been my first year of organizing the league and I feel that everything went very well and problems were very few and far between. There are a few issues that need to be looked at and we hope that there will be more teams entering the league next year making it more competitive and exciting. Cup Finals day at Esher RFC was a success and the feeling was that we should have this as a yearly event for all teams. We had 20 teams take part this year, which was superb. Next years competition will have a few rule changes and all teams will need to register their team before the first round and fill out team sheets before a game. (Team sheets will then be sent to myself, those teams that do not send in a team sheet will forfeit the game) St Marys were Challenge Cup winners. Writtle 2 were Challenge Shield winners. Bucks 2 were Challenge Cup Plate winners. Anglia Chelmsford were Challenge Shield Plate winners. 19.2 2007/8 Plan to have a 7s tournament next year and also try to run a Women’s 7s along the same lines as the Women’s Football. Referees courses are free from the RFU and members will be encouraged to send people on them. Planning to try for teamsheets next year. 19.3 Rugby League Tried to run a tournament which was promoted by Southgate. They invited lots of people – especially from the North of England. Only Hull came. They played a match which Southgate won, but they should not really call themselves SESSA Champions as has been spotted. It was agreed not to repeat the experiment. 20 Events 2007/8 20.1 Athletics – one day indoor event in the autumn at Lee Valley – S Sipple 20.2 Rugby – as above – S Ventre 20.3 Hockey – as above – M Bunn 20.4 Netball – start league later – have Rally too possibly – R Rogers 20.5 Golf – keep trying – R Brass 20.6 Mixed Volleyball – try for a one day tournament – S Dupree 20.7 Rounders – try again for a one day competition 20.8 Tennis – try for September – S Dupree 20.9 Badminton – 1 x singles, 1 x doubles tournaments – J Harbrow THE 16th AGM 21 Apologies for Absence - as above 22 The Minutes of the 15th AGM were agreed as a correct record.
