AnaG: hi Linda
JeffreyBl GOOD Q Alli
LindaEl: trouble logging in
MichelleJM: having a little bit of difficulty getting hands on text
BrettLS: how should we pace the reading?
MarkJ1: The book choice is up to you. Free pick.
BrettLS: what due by when
AnaG: book choice other than the 4?
TravisR: is the book report on one of our texts or one a different one?
LindaEl: Interested in the book choice thing too
LindaEl: any?
JeffreyBl: Management book
MarkJ1: Glad we are only doing one question at a time
LindaEl: right any management book?
TravisR: lol
AnaG: lol
MarkJ1: I might get lost otherwise
BrettLS: this is slow for us in TI
TravisR: i already started typing mine :)
AnaG thinking travis is in the same wave length..oooo
MarkJ1: Well I'll just try to speed up Brett
BrettLS: not you...i mean we're typing fewer questions than we usually do
BrettLS: per minute
JeffreyBl: So the management book of choice bookreport due in Malibu at F2F correct next item
MarkJ1: The book report is up to you! Pick what you like and share it with us
LindaEl: that will change Brett
LindaEl: in that case..I've already picked mine out
AnaG: due f2f? or amazon?
JeffreyBl: Question on the business plan
MarkJ1: Lets make the book report due by the end of the term on Amazon.
AnaG: nice
LindaEl: Also Brett's question about pacing of reading
JeffreyBl: Pacing
MarkJ1: I think we decided this morning to read Einstein 1st
MarkJ1: Does that work for you folks as well?
AllisonKF: Sure
JeffreyBl: Einstein is readily available?
MichelleJM: yes
LindaEl: very interesting so far
JeffreyBl: affirmative
MarkJ1: If so the order of reading suggested by the morning folks is on the transcript from this morning
TravisR: that's the one I'm waiting on, but I can catch up. Any idea where we'll go from there
AnaG: no problem..
MarkJ1: I posted it in our group at www.teachade.com
TravisR: cool
CelesteA: saw the order on the morning transcript
JeffL: nice site BTW....
JeffreyBl: Give it to us Celeste
MichelleJM: any guidelines on text at all? ...really wide open?
MarkJ1: Really wide open...try to make it relvant to this class ...but there is wiggle room there too
CelesteA: Tranny's on the cadre site Blake
LindaEl: am I suppose to already know about teacheade?
BrettLS: are the morning sessions always going to dominate the order of things like that?
JeffreyBl: Yeah its in my hand too still looking
TravisR: and on Santa Monica and Vine
JeffreyBl: I think the morning crowd is a bit impulsive to be making such important decisions!
MarkJ1: I'd like to use www.teachade.com as our asynchronous environment.
CelesteA: good question Brett
LindaEl: as opposed to BlackBoard?
AnaG listening to Brett and celeste
MarkJ1: I have a Pepperdine group there. You can go in and register
(for free) and join the group
JeffL: nice! Who runs Techade, Mark?
MarkJ1: Yes..Linda..no Blackboard at least until f-2-f
MichelleJM: is there a reason we aren't using bb?
LindaEl: Thanks, just need to know where I'm to be
JeffreyBl thinking if it ain't broke don't fix it
JeffreyBl: Jk
AnaG: why is "Done deals" before Manageme ntchallenges?
TravisR: BB is broke
JeffreyBl: lol
MichelleJM: I'm not a teacher
BrettLS: guess that's the prerogative of the morning folk
JeffreyBl: Well Im not a corporate busybee
LindaEl: new BB Travis
BrettLS: ana
MarkJ1: Teachade is a My Space for teachers....no problem if you are not a teacher..
MichelleJM -P
JeffL: BB is always down... btw- you guys know that wavenet's error page is the
3rd highest hit for pepperdine?
JeffL: lol
AnaG: wondering too...
AllisonKF smiles
MichelleJM: funny jeff
JeffreyBl: and they are still not Vista compatible
LindaEl: lol Jeff
MarkJ1: Syllabus questions?
AnaG: mark..we have non teachers here
JeffreyBl: Yes there are 3 assignments total..
AnaG: i mean industry folks too
JeffreyBl: the business plan the book report and what is the 3rd again?
MarkJ1: I'm an industry folk too Ana...what is the concern?
JeffreyBl looking
AnaG: just going on michelles question
MichelleJM: lol...nice Ana
AnaG: lol
JeffreyBl: don't forget the www.bizplanit.com
MichelleJM: sorry, was thinking there was a fee to use teachade
MarkJ1: No fee to use the site.
LindaEl: Do you want us in groups for project prior to F2F?
MarkJ1: You can simply register and join the pepperdine group.
AnaG: done
BrettLS: what is the posting expectation in Teacherade weekly?
JeffreyBl: I visually scoured the tapped in session from the morning and I cannot find the order of the books.. Will someone please check that
TravisR: wow that was fast ana :)
MarkJ1: Shall we address the business plan assignment next?
AnaG passing the espresso to travis
JeffL: sure
JeffreyBl: Sure
MichelleJM: yes please
LindaEl: sure
AnaG: einstein..MBV..Done Deals..Management challenges
MarkJ1: I don't have posting expectations. I leave it to you to post when you think you have something to say
LindaEl: very cool
JeffreyBl: Cool deal
MarkJ1: Please allow me to say this now...this is your learning experience and I want you to make the decisions as to how much you participate and contribute
JeffreyBl: Thx ana
AnaG smiles
MarkJ1: Clearly I expect you to do the assignments
JeffL: thanks Mark... much appreciated...
JeffL smiles
AllisonKF smiles
MarkJ1: Business Plan?
JeffreyBl expressionless
JeffreyBl: Yes
CelesteA: understood and appreciated
BrettLS: how does that synchronize with an a-f numerical score system on the syllabus though/
LindaEl: please- clueless
MarkJ1: You can group up when you are ready
MarkJ1: You may pick a business plan model of your choice
MichelleJM: done
MarkJ1: I will put up some options in teachade
MarkJ1: Feel free to pick the one that works for you and your team
AllisonKF: Sounds good
MarkJ1: This assignment is your opportunity to investigate something that you may be interested in doing for real
AnaG: that was quick mihcelle
MarkJ1: or it may simply be practice
MichelleJM: it went quickly
MarkJ1: you decide
BrettLS: so would starting a film production company be appropriate for the biz plan?
MarkJ1: Yes Brett
LindaEl: or a consult group?
MarkJ1: Yep!
JeffL: sounds fun Brett! what will you be shooting?
AnaG: lol
JeffreyBl: Or for profit reading language consultancy
MarkJ1: Works for me Jeffrey
JeffreyBl: nice
BrettLS: a sample pilot to shop around to tv or cable
TravisR: would it be ok to do a business plan for a current business
(if you never had one)
LindaEl: or a franchise or boutique?
MarkJ1: Yes Travis...
MarkJ1: What kinf of boutique Linda?
TravisR: is it bigger than a bread box?
LindaEl: gifts, decor
LindaEl: girlly stuff
JeffreyBl: How much of the plan is to be intertwined with tech?
BrettLS: what is the enduring understanding you want us to develop for ourselves in doing the biz plan Mark?
LindaEl: or do we need to focus on the technology side
MarkJ1: Sure...but why are you spending money on this degree...:-)
LindaEl: just questions/
JeffreyBl: TO make money
AnaG: to linda..thatl wodu be tech stuff if it is online..
MarkJ1: Ah good point Ana!
JeffL: Jeff- or at least to pay back the loans...
AnaG: hmm..maybe jewelry? wuold that count?
LindaEl: an online boutique then ana
JeffreyBl: Ana the degree is in tech
JeffreyBl: Although point well taken
MichelleJM: really jeff thought it was in Education
LindaEl: tech shop online then
TravisR: it could be virtual jewelry
MichelleJM: lol
JeffreyBl lol
MarkJ1: Hey, as I said this is your learning experience!
BrettLS: what is the enduring understanding you want us to develop for ourselves in doing the biz plan Mark?
CelesteA: jewelry for secondlife characters
MichelleJM: business plan to sell on Second Life
AnaG: yeah.. you love jewelry..do an online boutique..
JeffreyBl: Listening to mark
LindaEl: lol celeste
AllisonKF: Jewlrey that holds memory sticks
JeffL thinks the creative juices are flowing... lol
TravisR: wow, i was just joking and you guys turned it into something viable
CelesteA: I was joking too, but we were on a roll.
JeffL thinks Celeste and Travis should joke more often
MarkJ1: Brett, after this exercise you should be able to look at any enterprise you may want to engage with and understand it in financial terms
BrettLS: thanks
MarkJ1: You should also have confronted some value questions
MarkJ1: What you value!
AnaG: sometimes..what we value does not make money..
MichelleJM: Ana, that's called "not for profit"
MarkJ1: Absolutely Ana. I hope that question will be addressed in this process
CelesteA: tell me about it Ana
MichelleJM: or "non profit"
LindaEl: I'm interested in a for profit side
BrettLS: or michele..sometimes that can describe for profit that doesn't have an adaptable plan
MarkJ1: Either for profit or non-profit is fine
MichelleJM: lol, that's just red ink
AnaG: okay
LindaEl: sounds interesting
MarkJ1: I've certainly had for profit companies not make a profit!
LindaEl: too bad
MarkJ1: Good learning experience
MarkJ1: So they say!
MichelleJM: I'm guessing it wasn't intentional
LindaEl: Don't want to sound corny but I want to learn as much as I can here
MarkJ1: Right..is it ever?
CelesteA: If you're having IRS issue it might be
BrettLS: well in the Producers it was..
MarkJ1: Good point Brett!
AnaG: I like that show
MichelleJM: Ana, is that your SL avatar?
BrettLS: are there any parts of the plan you'll want to see before the end of the course?
AnaG: yeah..i'm blue with long legs
MarkJ1: I strongly suggest that you take a look at a business plan template and we will us TI sessions to address this assignment in more detail
JeffreyBl: SOunds good
MichelleJM: plan to talk about next TI?
MarkJ1: I'm not sure what you mean Brett.
LindaEl: guidance is good
AllisonKF: Can we email a draft for direction if necesary
AnaG: lots of reflecting to do..before the business plan..
BrettLS: the syllabus indicates it's due at the end of teh semester...i was wondering if bits or pieces would be due at certain points along teh way
MarkJ1: The business plan is due on the last day of the course
MichelleJM: me too Ana
MarkJ1: No bits and pieces just the final when due
AnaG: sigh
TravisR: July 20th?
MarkJ1: We will spend a lot of time on this during f-2-f as well
AnaG: 26th?
JeffL: i think it's the 20th
AnaG: k
MichelleJM: excellent
MarkJ1: Ana, I think reflecting before starting on this assignment is a good idea.
MarkJ1: It really is an opportunity to dream a bit
AnaG: wondering..evaluated for business plan? implementation? sustainability?
MarkJ1: Ana?
AnaG: so end of course..plan and not actual implementation of product>
MarkJ1: Absolutely, just the plan...
MarkJ1: We will also go over the detailed rubric during the f-2-f
AnaG: lots of dreamin to do too..
TravisR: i have am idea that I have wanted to conceptualize, but the tech pieces are still unclear for me. Does the idea need to be completely fleshed out in order to write a solid business plan? Or is the plan just the financial backbone of the enterprise?
MarkJ1: The business planning process will drive you to crystalize you ideas.
That is what the process does best and is a major point in the process
MarkJ1: Sometimes folks decide they can't do the business after doing the plan
JeffreyBl: Is it necessary to work in a group?
TravisR: makes sense...
JeffreyBl: Or suggested for collaboration?
MarkJ1: Not necessary to work in groups at all.
MarkJ1: Feel free to work alone
BrettLS: i once dashed friends dream of opening a boutique business by pushing them to do the plan
JeffreyBl: thx
BrettLS: they saw they couldn't keep it alive and profit
BrettLS: with the resources they had
AnaG: reality hurts
CelesteA: dashed a dream or saved their pocketbook?
MarkJ1: Right Brett I've seen that a lot...BP causes one to move from dreams to the pragmatic
MarkJ1: But first it is good to dream!
MarkJ1: Questions about the Interview exercise?
AnaG: yes..please define tech manager
CelesteA: How will we go about choosing the group questions
MarkJ1: Good questions.
MarkJ1: First
AnaG: morning ti you mentioned a tech manager..director/vp.
MarkJ1: Tech Manager should be senior to you and what Ana said
LindaEl: What kind of permissions are required for this?
BrettLS: how much of a tech environment does it have to be?......can they be in a media print/online mixed organization and be the ceo?
MarkJ1: This will not be an APA assignment as we will not be publishing anything from this exercise
LindaEl: would school district cto / cio work?
LindaEl: Thx
MarkJ1: As long as they manage hi-tech worker
MarkJ1: Yes Linda
LindaEl: yep
JeffreyBl: How about interviewing IT manager at Boeing?
MarkJ1: Great Jeff!
JeffreyBl: Ok
LindaEl: cool idea Jeffb
MarkJ1: We will develop the questionaire as a group in asynchronous mode...
LindaEl: of from FEd Ex?
MarkJ1: We will discuss in TO also
JeffL: i have a question on timing... the syllabus says... to bring interview to f2f.... we need to get on this soon, right?
AnaG: hmm..looking towards hollywood..something fun..travis?
MarkJ1: Fed ex is good too
MichelleJM: so no IRB?
MarkJ1: No IRB for this exercise
MichelleJM: cool...thx
CelesteA: no IRB, no APA am I dreaming?
AnaG: lol
TravisR: and no BB
JeffreyBl: what is APA?
JeffL: Celeste, Mark did tell us to dream... lol
CelesteA: I MUST be dreaming with no BB
LindaEl: WOW!
TravisR: ok you are so fired jeff
JeffreyBl waiting
MichelleJM: Mark, curious to know if you have any specific questions you'd like us to ask
MarkJ1: Sorry I said APA I instead of IRB
MichelleJM: looking for continuity?
MarkJ1: This exercise will not require us to do a formal paper.
JeffL: good michelle!
JeffreyBl: Mark can you tell us about your background aqnd interests in tech please
CelesteA: We all ask the same questions, right?
MarkJ1: We are going to gather data through the interviews and practice coding and analysing data
MichelleJM: oh...very cool
TravisR: michelle I believe we are developing questions as a group, right mark?
MarkJ1: Yes we ask the different participants the same questions
LindaEl: and doing this at F2F?
MichelleJM: sorry, the syl does say that
MarkJ1: Yes coding and analysis is at F-2-F
JeffreyBl: Will we be doing some sort of post-data analysis comparison as a group?
MarkJ1: Interviews and transcribing before we get to Malibu
LindaEl: got it
MichelleJM: then we'll develop questionnaire during TI sessions?
MarkJ1: We will code the data as a group and develop a set of findings
AnaG: morning TI: schedule interview first and second week of june
JeffreyBl: Asynchronous Michelle
MichelleJM: got it
MarkJ1: Questions will come out of asynchronous primarily
MarkJ1: Right Ana...We should be ready to interview by the second week of June at the latest
JeffL: Mark- so that we can line up the interviews... what time frame might you suggest we make appts. for? When do you see us finishing the questions?
JeffL: lol
JeffL: k
MarkJ1: Thanks for asking Jeff:-)
JeffL: sorry... you read my mind
MarkJ1: Any other questions for tonight?
MarkJ1: We can extend details on teachade
AllisonKF: I'm good for now.
AllisonKF: Thanks!
LindaEl: me too
MichelleJM: I'm good for now
MichelleJM: too
BrettLS: will there continue to be agenda setting in the morning TI that requires reading it before our class?
JeffL: me too
AnaG: good quetion
MarkJ1: Good question Brett
MarkJ1: Book discussions will begin asynch and we will schedule TI for certain follow-up
MarkJ1: I want to keep TI for logistics and support if possible
LindaEl: Do you have a time set for starting book discussions
JeffreyBl: Where are you now?
JeffreyBl: ..
JeffreyBl: I feel like we have established some clear expectations
JeffreyBl: Asynchronous
JeffreyBl: Ignore
MarkJ1: I will post the first thread tomorrow
MichelleJM: how many interviews are you looking for us to do?
MarkJ1: 1 each Michelle
MichelleJM: thx
MarkJ1: Easy right!
JeffL: yep
AllisonKF smiles
BrettLS: so if we're waiting for the book to arrive...
MichelleJM: yes
JeffreyBl Nods head
CelesteA: another good question
TravisR: well just need to find someone in tech world now
MarkJ1: You will have time to catch up Brett
MichelleJM: transcribing one interview should be easy enough
MarkJ1: I use the books as background
MarkJ1: The interviews and business plan are the big assignments
AnaG imagining Michelle transcribing..past life
MichelleJM: funny Ana
MarkJ1: Anything else tonight?
MichelleJM: nope
JeffL: i'm cool
BrettLS: nada
AnaG: nope
AllisonKF: Thanks!
JeffreyBl: Not in particular
AnaG: thanks Mar
AnaG: k
MarkJ1: I really look forward to learning with you all!

Private dialog with: JeffL
JeffL: Mark- regarding research questions.... have you talked with Kay
Davis?
She's planning on working with us on IRB this semester... although she's working on her class syllabus...
JeffL: wondering if her q's are compatible with your q's which then can lead to research?
