GRADING POLICY The English Department at DMA calculates grades using the following percentages: Classwork/Homework: 15% Quizzes: 35% Tests/Major Writing Assignments/Projects: 50% The instructor will clarify the category of each assignment beforehand. Weekly vocabulary assessments will count as quizzes. Each of the two Marking Periods in the semester is worth 40% of your final grade, while the midterm and final exam grades are each worth 10% of your final grade. The letter grades can be found in your DMA Handbook. Cadets who earn an A (NOT an ‘A AVERAGE’…an A) on each Marking Period AND the midterm exam will be exempt from the final exam for that course. V. CLASSWORK/HOMEWORK All classwork/homework should be done to the best of your ability. Completing homework on time is an essential part of the class in that it will greatly impact your performance on formative and summative assessments. The DMA policy on late work is now as follows: any cadet who submits work past the due date will be subject to the following: One day late they will receive one letter grade less than what they earned (example: an A paper will now only be able to earn a B, the second day a C, the third day a D) After the fourth day the highest grade they can earn is a fifty percent. After the fifth day it gets listed in the grade book as a zero and cannot be made up. Classwork will NOT be accepted late unless cadet was absent excused. VI. MULTIMEDIA IN THE CLASSROOM This notice serves as a permission slip to allow your Cadet to view PG-13 films in English class with recognized literary merit for the purposes of classroom instruction. Sometimes we come across films that are useful as a teaching tool and serve as a great supplement to a lesson plan. VII. TURNITIN.COM Throughout the school year, Cadets will be required to submit assignments electronically via TurnItIn.com. More information on how to submit these assignments will be given to Cadets at a later date. VIII. ABSENCES 1. 2. 3. Cadets will be allowed to make up any missed work for full credit if it is marked as excused. Any work completed as a result of an unexcused absence would be worth a maximum of 70%. If a cadet is found cutting class, it will be handled according to the Code of Conduct and the cadet will be unable to complete any of the work missed. Cadets will have one day to make up work for each day they have missed. Cadets absent for extended periods of time should meet with me to coordinate a make-up schedule. Early dismissals, field trips, sports activities, etc. do NOT excuse you from turning in work on time. If you are in school for any part of the day an assignment is due, you must turn in the assignment before leaving school. IX. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY Academic dishonesty, plagiarism, and/or cheating will not be tolerated under ANY circumstances. These are serious academic offenses and will result in a zero on the assignment and will be accompanied by disciplinary action. X. EXTRA CREDIT Extra credit opportunities may be offered throughout the semester. Check the extra credit tab on Ms. Carson’s website. Make sure to take advantage of the opportunities when they arise since they may not necessarily fall at the end of the marking period or semester. Extra credit points will be added to your lowest test score. 2
