Presented By: Heart of America and Sunflower (Kansas) Chapter Healthcare Financial Management Association Seventeenth Annual Medicare Cost Report Training Seminar Two Levels of Training Beginning Intermediate/Advanced WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY AUGUST 3-4, 2011 Sheraton Overland Park Hotel Overland Park, KS ABOUT THE PROGRAM AND THE PRESENTERS Cost Report Reimbursement Seminar – For CAH and PPS Providers This seminar offers two separate and distinct two-day courses: Beginning and Intermediate/Advanced. The objectives of both courses are to make the Medicare cost report preparer more proficient and effective in the preparation and understanding of the Medicare cost report as it relates to their provider. The seminar will begin with a regulatory update from Larry O’Day, a well known Washington attorney, on the health care reimbursement and regulatory activity in our nation’s capital. A veteran of the health care industry and the political process in Washington on health care laws and regulations, Larry will provide us insight to the current activity and what’s to come focusing on areas that will impact the cost report and other reimbursement opportunities for providers. Beginning Cost Report Preparation Training (two days) Explanation and flow of the hospital Medicare cost report (HCFA Form 2552-10) worksheets Importance and Medicare impact of data maintained by the hospital for the Medicare cost report CAH cost reporting and strategic ideas for proper reimbursement PPS cost reporting, including Medicare bad debts, DSH, interns and residents, IPF PPS and IRF PPS, rural designations CAH and PPS providers will be together on Day 1 and will break out into separate groups on Day 2 to focus on the intricacies of each provider type. Who should attend: Personnel responsible for gathering the Medicare cost report data and those who want to gain a greater understanding of the “what’s and why’s” of cost report preparation. What to bring: A hard copy of your most recent Medicare Cost Report. Intermediate/Advanced Cost Report Preparation Training (two days) In-depth review of significant cost report worksheets including, but not limited to: patient days, wage index, account grouping for cost center preparation, reclassifications, adjustments, cost allocation statistics, etc. Review of the impact of changing cost center order and/or cost allocation basis and Medicare program requirements to change order/basis Review of non-hospital reimbursement systems; e.g., CAH, IPF PPS, IRF PPS, SNF PPS, swing-beds, rural health clinics, etc. Review of IME/GME, DSH, rural designations, Provider based clinics and 340 B program CAH and PPS providers will be together on Day 1 until afternoon break and will break out into separate groups for the rest of Day 1 and all of Day 2 to focus on the intricacies of each provider type. Who should attend: Personnel who have an understanding of the Medicare cost report and the flow of information from worksheet to worksheet in the cost report. Jason Barb is a member of BKD National Health Care Group and provides audit, reimbursement and consulting services to hospitals, long-term care facilities, governmental and not-for-profit organizations. His 13 plus years of experience include implementing new Financial Accounting Standards Board and Governmental Accounting Standards Board pronouncements, technology issues, internal control reviews, preparation of Medicare and Kansas Medicaid cost reports and performing employee benefit plan audits. Jason is a Fellow of The Healthcare Financial Management Association (FHMA). Jason is a certified member of the Sunflower Chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), has been a speaker at the chapter’s annual Medicare cost report training seminar and is co-chair of the HFMA Professional Excellence Committee. He also is a member of the Kansas Hospital Association, Kansas Health Care Association, Kansas Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Kansas Society of Certified Public Accountants. He is a graduate of Pittsburg State University, Kansas, with B.B.A. degrees in accounting and information systems. Sue Brammer, FHFMA, CPA. Sue is the leader of the Reimbursement Team for the Kansas City office of BKD, LLP. Sue has experience in leading Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) contract projects and representing hospitals with MAC audits and PRRB case appeals. Sue has 22 years of reimbursement and consulting experience in health care, assisting hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and other providers with reimbursement, audit and other financial consulting services. Sue is the past President of the Heart of America Chapter of HFMA and is also a Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CHFP) and a Fellow of HFMA. Rebekah S. Grupe. Becky has more than 10 years of experience with Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement and assists health care organizations in dealing with complex reimbursement and cost report matters. Becky reviews and prepares Medicare and Medicaid cost reports for critical access and prospective payment system hospitals, assists clients with low volume payment adjustment requests and is experienced with core-based statistical area wage index reviews. Becky is a member of HFMA and is currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Heart of America Chapter of HFMA. John Harris, CPA. As a member of the BKD National Health Care Group, John has more than 30 years of experience providing audit and consulting services to hospitals, long-term care and other health care facilities. John’s experience includes managing engagements for health care client financial audits, preparation and review of Medicare and Medicaid cost reports, preparation of operating budgets and participation in financial feasibility analysis as well as providing assistance in the area of corporate integrity. John supervises the preparation of all third-party reimbursement reports for hospitals, nursing homes and home health agencies. His services also include contract reviews, negotiations and representation in Medicare and Medicaid audits and exit conferences. John is a member of the Kansas Society of Certified Public Accountants, Healthcare Financial Management Association, National Rural Health Association and Kansas Health Care Association’s Reimbursement and Governmental Affairs Committee. John is a graduate of Kansas State University, Manhattan, with a B.S. degree in business administration. Steve M. Parde. Steve, a member of the BKD Health Care Group for more than 12 years, assists health care organizations with Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement issues and cost report preparation. Steve works with health care providers to resolve reimbursement and cost reporting issues, including, but not limited to, preparing appeals, requesting reclassification and low volume adjustments, providing alternative cost allocation strategies and consulting on a myriad of other reimbursement issues. Before joining BKD, Steve was with a Medicare Fiscal Intermediary for two years. Steve is a member of HFMA and is a Certified Healthcare Financial Professional. S. Craig Steen, CPA. Craig has more than 31 years of experience in health care, including 15 years with a Medicare fiscal intermediary. Craig focuses his time in assisting health care organizations with cost report preparation, analysis of new and existing Medicare regulations, appeal and settlement issues and compliance issues. In addition, Craig helps hospitals with wage index issues, Medicare bad debts, interns and residents, organ transplants and disproportionate share adjustments. Craig is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association in Oklahoma and a member of BKD’s Regulatory Advisory Committee. Kevin E. Wellen, CPA. Kevin works exclusively with health care clients, including academic medical centers, community hospitals, medical schools and managed care organizations. Kevin’s broad experience includes financial audits, financial feasibility studies, compliance, litigation support, third-party reimbursement consulting, preparation and review of cost reports and appeals. Prior to joining BKD, Kevin worked for a national not-for-profit system as a regional Director of Finance and Reimbursement for four years managing various aspects of finance, budget and reimbursement for multiple hospitals, including two academic medical centers, one children’s hospital and a rehabilitation hospital. Kevin is a member of BKD’s Regulatory Advisory Committee. William D. Clark, CPA, CHFP. Bill is a member of BKD National Health Care Group and assists health care providers with analysis of new and existing Medicare regulations, appeal and settlement issues and compliance matters. He has more than six years of experience in health care and has helped many hospitals across the U.S. in areas such as Medicare bad debts, wage index and disproportionate share. Bill has presented multiple educational seminars on Medicare reimbursement issues to hospital executives throughout Oklahoma. Bill serves on the board of directors of the Oklahoma chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association and chairs the membership committee. Bill also is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Oklahoma Society of Certified Public Accountants. Bill is a Certified Healthcare Financial Professional. Larry Oday. For more than 20 years, Larry’s practice has focused on health care legislation and insurance. His legal career includes work in corporate, government and private practice settings. During his service with the Health Care Financing Administration (now the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) in the early ‘80s, Larry had lead responsibility within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for the design, enactment and implementation of the Hospital Inpatient Prospective Payment System. Devon Haase Kim. Devon is the Executive Director at Haase and Long. Haase and Long provides a suite of solutions designed to create maximum revenue from the self-pay population in today’s health care facilities. Devon has a B.A. in Mathematics from Baker University. Kecia Kesler. Kecia is the owner of ARSI and serves as the President and CEO. Since 1992, she has grown the three person operation into a team of nearly 90 strong. Her main responsibility is sales and marketing, along with performing onsite consulting for clients to assist in developing Admissions and Billing Best Practices. For six years, she has served as Corporate Sponsorship Chair for the Sunflower HFMA Chapter and is very active in the Wichita Metro Area Chamber of Commerce, currently serving on its Business Services Advisory Council. She is a Business Plan Advisor for Youth Entrepreneurs Kansas (YEK) and on the Board of the Fundamental Learning Center. Ms. Kesler has been designated a Certified Healthcare Collection Specialist through ACA International. For two years in a row, her company has been a finalist in the Wichita Chamber’s Small Business of the Year Award and also recognized as the “Best Places to Work” in the collection industry.
