IP Address Configuration
The IP address configuration shown below uses VLSM. Some of the Interface
names may differ from those actually used in the packet tracer file submitted
with this report. I was assured that this was not significant. The individual
subnets are shown below the table with their range, network address and the
broadcast address.

Project Costs
In keeping with the case study specification, the network has been
designed allowing for 120 doctors machines and 90 admin machines in each
hospital. However the case study also mentions that there are to be 5 doctors
machines and 2 nurses machines connected to the doctors switch, and 4
administration staff and 1 receptionist computer connected to the
administration staff switch. This projected costing only takes into account the
machines mentioned above, and such cabling to connect these machines to the
switches. If the customer needs to expand the number of machines significantly
in the future, cabling will need to be re-structured to accommodate these
machines. This will incur a new cost not covered in this projection. The cost of
these extra machines themselves are also not included. The cost breakdown at
the end of the report would allow simple calculations to be made to the cost of
machinery and cable.
The first cost in the breakdown will be for the machines themselves. The
case study specifies that the machines should be ‘future proof’. This statement is
non-existent in the technology world as new technology is always being
developed. The machines I have chosen are high spec machines, they should not
need replaced for at least 3 years, perhaps 4 years.
The machine to be used is a Zoostorm 62-4303. The machine has a quadcore processor and 4GB RAM. All machines come with a 19” LCD display. The PC
has all the required ports and Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows
Vista. The machine has a huge specification, full details below, and will have no
problems handling Microsoft’s new operating system ‘Windows 7’ when it is
released. This is one of the most ‘future-proof’ systems available.
Full Spec:
- Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 Quad Core 2.5GHz Processor featuring 1333MHz
Front Side Bus and 6MB Cache
- 4GB DDR2 800MHz PC6400 Memory
- 500GB SATA300 (SATAII) Hard Drive with 8MB Cache
- 20x DVD+/-RW RAM SATA Double Layer Drive
- 512MB Dedicated nVidia 9600GT Graphics (DirectX 10 compatible)
- 5.1 Audio
- Brushed Aluminium and black mATX Case
- 7 USB2.0 Ports (3 front, 4 rear)
- 52 in 1 Flash Memory Card Reader and Writer
- 10/100 LAN
- 19" LCD Monitor with 1440x900 resolution and 5ms response & DVI
- 5.1 Surround Sound Speaker Set
- Black Keyboard and Mouse
- Microsoft Vista Home Premium
- 1 Year return to base warranty on PC base unit
- 3 years on-site warranty on monitor
The cost of these machines is £635.19 including VAT, £552.34 excluding VAT.
The machines can be delivered within 10 working days from the vendor. The
delivery costs will be lumped together, the delivery cost is £7.04 including VAT
for the first 15Kg and £0.34 for each additional Kg. If each computer weighs
14Kg then the total cost of delivering all the machines would be £116.18
including VAT, 97.79 excluding VAT.
Total cost of all 24 machines including delivery is £15360.74 (£13,353.95
excluding VAT). I feel that this cost could perhaps be negotiated as we are
buying many systems in a single bulk order.
The next cost would be for cabling. The most cost effective way of cabling
would be to bulk buy raw cable and RJ45 connectors and assemble the cable on
site. This would ensure minimal cable wastage and cable would be tailored to fit
each customer site. The cost of 305m cable on a drum is £89.29 including VAT
and delivery. Three of these drums will be required bringing the total cost to
£267.87. The connectors for the end of the cable come in packs of 25 and cost
£12.81 including VAT and delivery. 75 RJ45s would be required bringing the
total cost to £38.43. How the cable will be allocated is shown and explained in
the next section of this report. The sockets on the walls will cost £19.84 each, 24
of these will be required. I have chosen to purchase 30 of these to cover for
defective parts and spares for future use, bringing the total cost including VAT
and delivery to £595.20. All of the cabling components will take up to 2 weeks to
be delivered.
Two switches will be required on each Hospital site and one router.
Another single switch and router will be required at the HQ site. The switches
will be 24 port comms express switches at a cost of £51.74 each including VAT
and next day delivery. The total cost of the switches used will be £258.70. The
routers used will be cisco 1841 routers at a cost of £554.28, including VAT and
delivery. The total cost of all 3 routers will be £1662.84.
A technician will be required to complete the job. A technician will cost
£30 an hour. I feel the technician will take a day to install the wiring and a day to
configure the routers and nodes. This brings the total time to 4 days. To allow
for any problems that may occur during the installation it has been decided to
hire the technician for 5 8-hour days, to complete the installation. The technitian
has agreed to complete the cable construction for a fixed cost of £75. This brings
the total labor cost to £1275. This cost includes hire of any tools required for the
job.

Cabling Diagram
The two hospitals in question have the same floor plan. The cables are placed
under the wooden floor and terminate on the afore mentioned RJ45 sockets. The
cabling between the nodes and the core wiring (sockets) is 1m in length. 30 of
these 1m cables will be supplied to the customer although only 24 are required
to connect all the machines, this will allow for easy expansion to the network.
