Sentence Workshop:
Through incorporating a mix of patriotism, anaphora and similarities to church sermons,
King has crafted a speech that has withstood the annals of time as a memorable and
powerful piece of literary work.
Additionally, like King’s use of patriotism, his use of religion further unifies the crowd
tha he is speaking to by appealing to their religious beliefs, which can be extended to
their set of morals, which can then be extended to their very character. By appealing to
something so basal and fundamental, he evokes from the crowd a strength and inspiration
needed to fight toward their goal.
Three quote rule. Explain. “We got back a check marked ‘insufficient funds.’”
The repetition of this phrase is the reason the speech is memorable.
In his speech he uses many methods which make it a a great piece of writing. For
instance, his organization, persuasion, and figure of speeches.
His persuasion throughout his speech not only impacts his listeners, it also inclines them
to agree with what he is saying.
King starts off with the line “Five score years ago” (1), a line closely resembling the
famous “Four Score and seven years ago” (1) opening line delivered by Abraham Lincoln
in The Gettysburg Address.
