Chemistry Course Syllabus
New Mission High School
2014-2015
Teacher: Mr. Gene Lee
Room: 234
Phone: (847) 852-0422
Email: genelee10@gmail.com
Overview:
We will study Chemistry by exploring six main units: Matter, Particle Model, Atoms, Counting Particles,
Chemical Changes, and Stoichiometry.
1. How do we view matter? (Answer in terms of the particle you are using to describe matter)
2. How does it behave? (Provide an explanation of the behavior using this particle model)
3. What is the role of energy in the changes we observe?
In Matter (3-4 weeks), we will lay the foundation for the other units by learning about:



Lab safety, graphing, and lab reports
Metric System and unit analysis
Properties of matter: density, mass, volume
During our next unit, Particle Model (3 weeks), we will expand on what we learned in Matter by studying:



How the parts of matter behave when heated
Energy transfer between particles
Laws that govern gases such as carbon dioxide and oxygen
Our next two units, Atoms and Counting Particles (4 weeks), we will learn about:



What the atom looks like
Different types of matter
Figuring out how many atoms are present
Chemical Changes (2-3 weeks) comes next and we will study


Chemical reactions and balancing reactions
Different types of reactions
Our last unit, Stoichiometry (2 weeks), will cover

Predicting how much product will form based on the chemical reaction
There’s no need to be discouraged if this seems foreign to you. It should, otherwise you wouldn’t need to take
this class! We will tackle this material one step at a time and will do our best to build a good foundation in
Chemistry.
I am looking forward to a great year together and hope you are too!
Grading: Your term grade is an average of the following:
Assignments
ASSESSMENTS: Projects (Vehicle, Labs, Projects, Presentations)
Tests (End of Chapter/Unit, Midterm, Final, Mock SAT/PARCC)
Quizzes (Weekly/Daily)
Classwork (Exit Ticket, Practice, Reflection, classwork)

References:
Our main text is Living by Chemistry by Angelica Stacy.
We will also use excerpts from other texts and references as well as professional journals to supplement our
work.
Academic Expectations:
You will come prepared to:
1. Challenge your current knowledge and understanding
2. Solve and think critically about new concepts
3. Try it on (willing to try different things in class)
4. Work with peers to solve problems, and help each other during class
5. Be open to making mistakes, and be open to other students making mistakes (you WILL make
mistakes, everyone does, its OK its how people learn!)
Class Code of Conduct

To be developed later…
Mr. Lee’s responsibilities:

Develop activities to help you learn Chemistry.

Provide appropriate resources to help you complete work.

Return work to you in a timely manner with feedback.

Provide opportunities for extra help, make-up, & enrichment work.

Strive to create and maintain a classroom environment where you and your classmates may learn.
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I would like to welcome you and your student to New Mission High School’s Chemistry class! I am writing to
inform you of some of the class requirements and class expectations. A syllabus will be given the first day of
class with information about the class for you and your student to look over together.
These are the required materials for the class that need to be purchased and brought to class by
September 9.




Tuesday
Pencil or pen
Calculator (only need basic functions) – dollar tree has excellent $1 calculators
Composition Notebook
1 Inch Binder
Chemistry will have labs and activities to help investigate and understand the Chemistry concepts. It is
important for each student to come prepared and ready to learn each day, and take responsibility for the work
in the class. There will be projects and lab reports throughout the class, so ask your child about what is due the
next day.
If you need to contact me my email address is genelee10@gmail.com and my cell phone number is
(847) 852- 0422. I will return your message as soon as possible.
I look forward to meeting and working with you this year.
How you can help:
 Buying the above required materials before Tues September 9
 Making sure your child finishes the assignments
 Calling or emailing me if you have any questions or concerns
