Emet Valente (Figurative folk genre prints), born in Jolo, Sulu in 1932, fine arts graduate of West Negros University, Bacolod City. Coming to Manila, trained in graphic arts at the Contemporary Arts Gallery as an apprentice to Manuel Rodriguez, Sr. (acknowledged father of Philippine print making). Greatly influenced by Rodriguez, Valente produces multi-colored prints of country folk in an illustrative style with folk flavor. Since the 1970’s, his works have represented the country at Philippine print exhibits in Tel Aviv; Djakarta and Bandung; UNESCO Paris; Hong Kong; Argentina, Brazil, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro; Victoria, Australia; and in recent years, the Wakayama International Print Show,Japan, 1992. From 1979 to 1984, joined group shows in the graphic arts at Print Collections Gallery, Ayala Museum, Philippine Plaza, Print Collection, City Gallery, Argentina. A member of the Mariposa workshop, he has won four awards at PAP exhibits in the 1970’s and 80’s and was First Prize winner, PAP competition of 1989.
