Wiese Instructor Email: Lisa.Wiese@k12.sd.us Instructor Website: https://lwiese.wikispaces.com/ Room: Computer 1 (Lab 1) Grade Level: 9-10 Course Prerequisites: None Course Description Computer Applications is an elective class that will count for .5 CTE credit and .5 Elective credit for graduation. Computer Applications will teach computer terminology, application of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint Access), Internet, and Microsoft Publisher. Student e-mail through school e-mail account will also be used. If time allows, we will also be exploring Web 2.0 tools like Goggle Docs, Photo Story 3, Wikispaces, etc. The information learned in this course will help students with future computer and other courses at Howard High School as well as prepare them for future education and careers. Instructional Philosophy Throughout the course, students will be completing projects dealing with Microsoft Office applications. Students are expected to complete all assignments. Student assignments should be thorough and meet industry standards. Student work that does not show an exemplary level of competency will be redone by the student to receive credit. Assessment methods will include daily work, project, quizzes, and tests. Mrs. Wiese’s Expectations from Students Students are expected to purchase a 1” or 1½” binder to keep all material for this class organized. Come to class prepared (assignments completed, pencil/material, etc.) Keep your voice in check Come willing to learn, participate, and have fun Ask if you don’t understand Get assignments before you leave for planned absences (medical, sports, school activities, vacation, etc.) Course Standards Students will understand how to create a variety of documents using word processing software. CA 1.1 Students will be able to modify and manipulate paragraphs and paragraph formatting. CA 1.2 Students will be able to use tables to enhance documents. CA 1.3 Students will be able to customize document formatting CA 1.4 Students will be able to create a mail merge document. CA 1.5 Students will be able to create and use the advance features of word processing software. CA 1.6 Students will be able to format characters and use the Help features Students will understand how to create and manipulate workbooks using spreadsheet software. CA 2.1 Students will be able to format a spreadsheet to enhance its appearance CA 2.2 Students will be able to insert formulas into a worksheet to enhance its functionality CA 2.3 Students will be able to manipulate data within and between workbooks CA 2.4 Students will be able to create charts within a spreadsheet to represent data graphically. Students will understand how to create a database table and forms using database software. CA 3.1 Students will be able to create a database table CA 3.2 Students will be able to create relationships between database tables CA 3.3 Students will be able to perform queries and filter records CA 3.4 Students will be able to create forms in the database CA 3.5 Students will be able to create reports in the database Students will understand how to create a professional looking presentations using presentation software. CA 4.1 Students will be able create presentation CA 4.2 Students will be able to modify a presentation CA 4.3 Students will be able to format the slides in the presentation CA 4.4 Students will be able to add visual appeal and animation to presentation CA 4.5 Students will be able to add visual elements to a presentation CA 4.6 Students will be able to share and present their presentations Major Projects and Assignments (These projects may change at the discretion of the instructor) After each chapter, a project will be done so students can demonstrate the skills they have learned. Word Processing Example: Menu and Newsletter Spreadsheet Example: M&M activity Database Example: Music Database Presentation Software Example: Final Project: Students will complete the “Skateboard, Inc.” simulation in which the student’s role will be responsible for creating a series of document. Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Publisher will be used in this project. Assessment Plan All assignments are designed to show whether students have met the standards for the course. Any lesson questions, projects, quizzes, and tests that are assessed as “poor quality” will be expected to be REDONE for higher credit. Distribution of Grading Components It will be expected that all students do all assignments and taking a zero for an assignment it not an option. Students may also sign out to come in for help during SH. School tutoring days are another good time to come in the get extra help.
