Graduate Program:
Master of Science in Information Technology
Project Title:
ITMI Computer Lab
To be completed during the: Spring, 2003 semester
Description of Research:
This project includes all facets of a generalized local area network and client setup. It will involve the
evaluation of an existing TCPIP network, and the reconfiguration, setup and installation of 3 servers and 23
client PCs. The servers will utilize the MS 2000 Advanced Server Operating System, and the clients will
utilize Windows XP Professional. The installations will include the configuration of MS authentication,
installation of application based utility software. Further, Microsoft SQL Server, MS Internet Information
Services, MS Data Analysis Services, and Oracle Server will be installed.
This plan goes well with the requirement that a direct research should combine the concepts taught in
different MSIT courses taken. The project incorporates almost all the MSIT curriculum, including GBA 573
Information Technology Project Management, GBA-576 Data Communications and Networks, GBA 577
Information Systems Design and Development, GBA-598 Database Management, and GBA 578 Web Site
Design and Management. Upon completion the network, servers, clients, and applications will provide the
primary ITMI computer lab and will be utilized for course instruction in both undergraduate and graduate
level computer network, web, and database courses.
Method of Evaluation: (to be completed by faculty supervisor)
The directed research will consist of three parts.
1) An evaluation of the existing computer lab architecture and installations.
2) Design, setup and installation of new ITMI lab residing on a TCPIP network, utilizing Microsoft Servers
and client Operating Systems.
3) A paper of approximately 20 pages documenting the new ITMI Computer Lab architecture, systems and
installations completed in part 2.
