‘British Bake-off’
Cake Competition
With judging in five categories ranging
from beginners to professionals
9 August / Deadline for registration
15 August / Cake submissions
16 August / Cake judging
17-18 August / Winning Cakes Display
This summer MK Gallery challenges people to design and make an amazing cake for its
‘British Bake-Off’ competition. The event is open to individual cake decorators of all
abilities, as well as children, families and groups. So whether you are a total beginner, a
culinary or cake decorating student or an established master, the Gallery would love you
to enter a cake creation, as long as it is made of real cake and the decorations are edible.
Victoria Mayes of the Gallery’s Learning Team explained the idea behind the competition.
“We’ve devised this fun event and several related children’s workshops featuring sugar
craft to raise awareness of our regular learning and participatory activities. They also
perfectly complement our current ‘ MK Calling’ exhibition, which celebrates creativity of all
kinds including some artworks by Lee Farmer made in cake icing. We hope that this
inspires people to submit some really original entries!”
The deadline for competition registration is noon on Friday 9 August; cakes must be
delivered to the Gallery by no later than 5pm on Thursday 15 August, ready for judging on
Friday 16 August. The judging panel includes Cally Jenkins, Editor of MK News. Entries
will be judged in five categories, with winning cakes from each category remaining on
display in MK Gallery’s entrance foyer over the weekend of Saturday 17 and Sunday 18
August 2013.
The five competition categories are: Children (10 years and under); Children (11-16
years); Family or group entry; Adults (Non-Professionals); Adult (Advanced/professional).
Full details of how to enter can be found on the Gallery’s website at www.mkgallery.org.

fascination with sugar craft to create an unusual collaborative artwork. Come along and
try your hand at creating something a little different.
In addition to his artistic practice, Lee works in variety of art and design-related fields,
including art education and floral and cake design. He loves sugar, chocolate and the
processes of chemistry, assembly and construction involved in designing and creating a
cake. From his initial drawings to his cake designs, Lee enjoys exploring naturally
occurring forms such as details of plant and animal life as well as tattoos and coats of
arms and heraldry for their flattened, simplified visual language.
