1.4 - Presidents Report 2008 Sport is often quoted as an extra curricula activity. I like others regard all activities which take place during the school day including the Key Learning Areas as curricula contributing to a child’s development and sport is one of these. With this in mind it is worthy of note that of the teams that represented the NSWPSSA there were notable results in School Sport Australia Exchanges of placing first in the Boys Cricket and Rugby Union , second place in Rugby League, both Boys and Girls Football and both Boys and Girls Touch Football and third placing in Tennis and Netball. It must be noted that every team is regarded as being a success for all the team members involved, regardless of the team’s final placement in the exchange. I congratulate all our conveners, coaches and managers on the professional way they have undertaken their roles for the benefit and betterment of the students in their care. Further thanks must also go to the regional conveners, coaches, managers and especially to the regional sports organisers for their diligence and application. I would also like to thank the members of the executive for their work throughout 2009 and in particular our treasurer John Lingwood who will not be standing for re-election. John, thank you for your work over the years not only at state level but regional, district and school levels. It would be remiss of me not to mention our executive officer Neil who has the task to guide the Association on a day to day basis. Your efforts and the dedication and efforts of the team at the state sports unit are truly valued. Once again thank you. I mentioned earlier School Sport Australia. NSWPSSA and CHS are strong participatory members. As part of raising the awareness of School Sport Australia I give the following information about School Sport Australia. It is funded by and accountable to the Australian Education Systems Officials’ Committee (AESOC) and has been authorised by that body to undertake the role of coordinating and conducting a broad range of school sporting programs for all students commensurate with their age and ability in an educational environment. School Sport Australia activities are interstate programs offered to students attending both government and nongovernment schools. These activities are the culmination of state based programs and offer gifted and talented students the opportunity to participate in higher levels of school sporting competition. These events are an integral part of the School Sport Australia program, not only for their sporting benefits, but also for the immense educational, cultural and social benefits they provide for the participants. In the Under 12 years Exchanges, NSWPSSA participates in all 13 SSA programs and 1 affiliated program. NSWPSSA has hosted Golf and Tennis this year with Softball to come. In 2009 we will host Track and Field, Cross Country, Basketball and Hockey. This year has seen the NSWPSSA undertake strategic planning. Some of these future directions involve tenure and succession planning, raising the profile of the Association both within and without the teaching/school environment, initiatives to be trialled in training and development and improved communication and data gathering techniques. I have had the pleasure this year to represent the NSWPSSA on the Pacific Schools Games Steering Committee that has organised the NSW team for the games during December in Canberra. I would at this point, like to acknowledge efforts of Dave Power, Chair of the committee, Ross Morrison the Executive Officer and Lucette Meekins who have organised and outfitted the NSW team which comprises of 950 members. Along with this I have represented the Association on the Premiers Sporting Challenge, which to date has 342 primary schools involved with a total participation of 68,570 children. A truly remarkable effort! In conclusion I would like to thank the NSWPSSA council for allowing me the opportunity to take the chair as president for 2008 but remind all of us of the difficult task ahead. The Association is top heavy with knowledge and experience amongst all our elected officers viz. executive, convener’s, coaches and managers. Knowing that within 10 years, a third of these will have retired. It is now that we should be active to encourage from the grass root up, more involvement by young teachers in school sport. Let it not be said that at the end, that after all was said and done, more was said than done.
