The Horizons-2 satellite, launched in December 2007, is jointly owned by Intelsat and JSAT’s U.S. Subsidiary, JSAT International Inc. (JII). Horizons-2 will primarily serve DTH customers in Russia who will be utilizing its wide coverage beam and highpower Ku-band transponders, by ensuring consistent signal reception from Moscow to Siberia. Since the inception of the Horizons Project in 2011, JSAT has expanded its satellite coverage with its partner Intelsat through services on the Horizons-1 and Horizons-2 satellites offering coverage of North America. Now, with this latest dynamic move to the Russian region, JSAT will be able to build on its partnership with Intelsat and provide additional coverage opportunities for its customers. Hughes Provides Airborne Solution for U.S. Government November 7, 2011 - Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HUGHES) announced it has been awarded a contract to provide satellite communications for an airborne solution to be utilized by a U.S. government agency for in-flight intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), including air segment, ground segment, and network management services. The Hughes airborne solution employs the advanced HX System, including the HX satellite Gateway, HX 200 satellite router and Expert Network Management System (ExpertNMS). Globecomm Introduces Tempo Enterprise Media Appliance November 8, 2011 - Globecomm Systems Inc. has launched its new Tempo Enterprise Media Appliance, designed to deliver live and on-demand content to desktops, mobile devices and televisions. TeleCommunication Systems Partners with Hughes to Enhance Global Secure Satellite Network November 8, 2011 - Hughes Network Systems, LLC (Hughes) announced that TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) will incorporate the Hughes HX VSAT system in its TCS HX Enabled Secure Satellite Network. The network service, which will be sold by both TCS and Hughes, will provide international satellite coverage for government and military customers, enhancing TCS's C4ISR prominence in secure communications solutions. The TCS HX Enabled Secure Satellite Network will support voice, data, and video communications. Ideal implementations for the Network include Command and Control (C2) operations and Intelligence/Surveillance/Reconnaissance (ISR) transport, as well as to provide Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) capabilities for warfighters deployed in combat and peacekeeping missions. EUTELSAT's W3C Satellite in Full Commercial Service November 9, 2011 - Eutelsat Communications announced the full entry into commercial service of W3C satellite at 16 degrees East. The transfer of all traffic, including over 480 television channels, onto W3C from the EUROBIRD™ 16, W2M and SESAT 1 satellites was completed by Eutelsat's control centre, working in close collaboration with clients and providers of uplink services. With the high-capacity W3C going on-line at 16 degrees East, Eutelsat is further equipped to service dynamic satellite broadcasting markets in Central Europe and Indian Ocean islands. Over 11 million homes in Central Europe and 500,000 in Indian Ocean islands are already equipped to receive broadcast services from this longstanding Eutelsat neighbourhood. Hughes 9202 BGAN Terminal Receives Inmarsat Type Approval November 9, 2011 - Hughes Network Systems, LLC announced that its new 9202 Class 2 portable terminal has been fully Type Approved by Inmarsat, with shipments beginning in December 2011. Building on the success of the Hughes 9201 Class 1 BGAN terminal, the Hughes 9202 is the world's smallest Class 2 BGAN terminal on the market, and is ideal for government and non-government organization (NGO) personnel such as first responders, public safety and mobile health care workers, as well as remote personnel in the utility, oil and gas, forestry, and telecommunications industries. The only commercial-grade Class 2 terminal available with a weather rating of IP55 (enclosure protected against dust and water jets), the Hughes 9202 incorporates a wireless access point, full 64kbps ISDN data capability, built-in RJ11 connection for voice and fax service, and is extended L-band ready. RSCC’s First Ka-Band Earth Station Opened at Dubna Satellite Communications Center November 9, 2011 - Russian Satellite Communications Company (RSCC) continues to upgrade its ground infrastructure for monitoring and control of the existing and prospective RSCC satellites. At Dubna SCC near Moscow, RSCC has opened the first Ka-Band satellite communications earth station. The Dubna SCC is an RSCC subsidiary. The Ka-Band station is intended for in-orbit tests of Express-AM-series satellites that carry 2030 GHz transponders as part of their payload modules. The earth station was built under the modernization and retrofit program designed to enhance automated monitoring and measuring system in preparation for the upcoming launches of RSCC satellites. O3b Networks Set to Virtually Double Fleet Capacity as Financing is Secured to Build Four More Satellites November 10, 2011 - John W. Dick, Chairman of the Board of O3b Networks, announced that the company has raised US$137 million for the construction of four additional satellites that will boost both capacity and redundancy over the emerging markets. The additional spacecraft, set to launch in 2014, will nearly double the capacity of O3b Networks' initial fleet of eight Medium Earth Orbit satellites, which are scheduled to be launched in early 2013. The expansion of the fleet from eight to twelve satellites will increase the company's throughput by more than 90% through a combination of the additional beams deployed and the enhanced link efficiency that a larger constellation of satellites can deliver. The company has already sold a little over a third of its capacity on a global basis with the contracted backlog now standing at over US $600 million. APSCC Monthly e-Newsletter 2 December 2011 Boeing Receives Additional Wideband Global SATCOM Orders November 13, 2011 - Boeing received a US$1.09 billion contract modification from the U.S. Air Force adding funding to the existing Block II follow-on contract for full production, launch and on-orbit activation of the seventh Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) satellite and procurement of long-lead materials for an eighth satellite. The authorization also includes options for the full production, launch and on-orbit activation of satellites eight and nine. The additional orders are part of the WGS Block II follow-on contract awarded in August 2010. The contract includes production, launch site activities, and initial orbital operations and checkout for each satellite. Boeing also is working with the Air Force on potential upgrades that would further increase the satellites' capacity and operational flexibility. Gilat Enters Strategic Alliance with RTComm and NIIR for Ka-band Network November 14, 2011 - Gilat Satellite Networks Ltd. announced that it has signed agreements with Russian-based service provider RTComm, the satellite service arm of Rostelecom Group, Russia's national telecommunications operator, and with NIIR FSUE, an institute for technology advancement of the Ministry for Telecommunications and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation. As part of these agreements, Gilat will supply network equipment and Ka-band end-user terminals for RTComm's future constellation of multi spot-beam satellites. The cooperation between the parties includes transfer of technology required for local manufacture in Russia, and R&D cooperation. As part of a frame MOU, the parties signed two specific agreements which will go into implementation this year. SES’ QuetzSat-1 Satellite Fully Operational November 14, 2011 - SES S.A. announces that the QuetzSat-1 satellite is fully operational and ready for service as of November 10th. QuetzSat-1 was successfully launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on board an ILS Proton Breeze M booster on September 30th, 2011. QuetzSat-1 is fully contracted to a subsidiary of EchoStar Corporation. The spacecraft is an all Ku-band high-powered (20-kilowatt) communications broadcasting satellite with coverage of Mexico, USA, and Central America. QuetzSat-1 is based on Space Systems/Loral's highly reliable 1300 satellite platform and carries 32 Ku-band transponders. It provides the flexibility to support a broad range of applications and technology advances and provides high power for advanced DTH television. The satellite is designed to deliver service for 15 years or longer. Intellian Announces Upcoming Release of Two New 3-Axis TV Antennas November 15, 2011 - Intellian Technologies announced the upcoming release of two compact 83 cm (33 in.) 3axis stabilized TV antennas. Shipping in March 2012, the Intellian t80 and t80W are ideally suited for 80ft plus yachts requiring a compact antenna size with global satellite TV service reception. The Intellian t80 antenna locks onto satellites quickly and provides seamless operation in all regions, offering global coverage. The antenna delivers this performance by utilizing a fully stabilized 3-axis platform, as well as a fourth axis for LNB auto-skew control. In addition, built-in as standard, the internal GPS combined with Intellian’s patented Wide Range Search (WRS) provides the fastest satellite acquisition possible. Multiple HD receivers can be connected to the system as standard, providing a truly hands off global coverage depending on the regions visited. Cobham Selected by MIL-SAT Communications for US Navy Contracts November 16, 2011 - MIL-SAT Communications, a long time distributor of Cobham’s Sea Tel satellite terminal range, has selected the Sea Tel 2.4 meter 9797B marine stabilized satellite communication terminal to fulfill a recently-awarded US Navy contract. More than 2,000 similar Sea Tel products have been shipped to customers worldwide from Cobham Antenna Systems, in Concord. The US$11.9 million firm-fixed price, indefinitedelivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract awarded to MIL-SAT by the US Navy requires a supply of Sea Tel antenna systems for the Force Training Assessment Department at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Corona Division. ViaSat Demonstrates 8 Mbps Airborne Broadband Satcom November 17, 2011 - ViaSat Inc. conducted a major public demonstration for members of the U.S. armed services during which it unveiled the industry’s highest performance mobile broadband system using an ultrasmall aperture 12-inch Ka-band tracking antenna. Representatives from the Air Force, Army, Marines, and Special Forces communities witnessed multiple applications including full-motion HD video running concurrently over a secure, encrypted mobile satellite network. The network included the ViaSat VR-12 Ka airborne satellite antenna and ArcLight® 2 modem mounted to a mobile vehicle. As the mobile vehicle drove around the Carlsbad area, the tracking antenna maintained its link with the satellite while demonstrating simultaneous encrypted HD video backhaul, video conferencing, IP phone communications, and http web browsing. APSCC Monthly e-Newsletter 3 December 2011 Thales Alenia Space and ISS-Reshetnev to Bolster Partnership by Creating Joint Venture November 18, 2011 - Thales Alenia Space and ISS-Reshetnev signed a MoU as the first step in creating a joint venture between the two companies. Thales Alenia Space and ISS-Reshetnev have carried out advanced work since 2004, combining their high standards in terms of quality, design and development, to jointly win contracts. This was initially the case for the Express A and AM series of satellites for the Russian operator RSCC. To date, Thales Alenia Space has participated in 30 programs in conjunction with Russian industry. Through this latest accord, the two companies agreed on a framework and a timetable for talks to create a competitive commercial and industrial joint venture, capable of assembling and integrating communications satellites and payloads for the Russian and international markets, as well as developing a new platform and equipment for high-power communications satellites. Globalstar Signs Agreement with Thales Alenia Space to Return Second-Generation Satellite to Service November 21, 2011 - Globalstar, Inc. announced the signing of an agreement to develop satellite software to enhance operations of the Globalstar second generation satellites. As Globalstar has previously announced, one of twelve new second-generation satellites that have been launched is not currently providing service due to an issue with two of its momentum wheels. According to the agreement, Thales Alenia Space will develop and provide the software necessary to adapt the in-flight configuration for this satellite, allowing it to return to service and sustain operations compliant with the objectives of its 15-year mission. This solution is expected to be implemented in stages over the coming months and is intended to be available for other satellites, if they experience similar issues in the future. Comtech EF Data and Thrane & Thrane Conclude Maritime Solution Interoperability Testing November 22, 2011 - Comtech EF Data Corporation and Thrane & Thrane announced the successful completion of interoperability testing of the SAILOR 900 VSAT marine stabilized antenna systems and the ROSS Open Antenna Management (ROAM) protocol. The interoperability will enable the SAILOR 900 VSAT antenna systems on maritime vessels to globally roam across multiple satellite beams, maintaining connectivity moving through different satellite footprints and enhancing communication capabilities at sea. The ROAM protocol offers a common management interface for Comtech EF Data's Roaming Oceanic Satellite Server (ROSS) and third-party Antenna Control Units (ACUs) by providing a generic set of commands, information, interfaces and status queries. ROSS is an integrated location server that works in conjunction with Comtech EF Data's Vipersat Management System to facilitate on-the-move satellite communications for oceanic vessels. Romantis Extends Occasional Use Capacity Lease on Express-AM44 November 28, 2011 - Romantis has signed an extension to its agreement for the occasional-use bandwidth on the Express-AM44 satellite (11 degrees West) with the Russian Satellite Communications Company (RSCC). Under the terms of the contract extension, Romantis will use Ku-band capacity on Express-AM44 European beam to further support its expanded occasional use services. Romantis is providing this bandwidth on-demand for media, business and government since September 2010 offering efficient, just-in-time video, voice and data communications. Romantis established single point-of-contact customer support and convenient web-based online booking and carrier monitoring tools that allow broadcasters and media companies to effectively plan and manage transmissions on-the-fly. Customers are offered flexible throughputs – from a couple of MHz for standard video or data and up to the entire transponder for HD transmissions. Milbank Advises O3b Networks in US$137 Million Satellite Financing November 29, 2011 - International law firm Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP has represented O3b Networks in their US$137 million financing for a series of 4 additional satellites to support super-fast broadband connections to Africa and other emerging markets. In 2010, Milbank represented O3b Networks in its US$1.2 billion financing of the purchase from Thales Alenia Space of its first eight medium earth orbit satellites. This year’s financing of four additional satellites will serve to significantly boost both the throughput and redundancy of the O3b constellation, virtually doubling its capacity through a combination of additional beams and enhanced link efficiency. The Project has a multi-sourced financing structure which brings together one export credit agency, four commercial lenders, seven development finance institutions and nine equity investors. Cobham SATCOM Antenna Selected by Virgin Atlantic Airways for 747 Upgrade Program November 29, 2011 - Cobham’s HGA-7001 SATCOM high gain antenna subsystem has been selected by Virgin Atlantic for the airline’s Boeing 747 cabin upgrade program to commence in 2012. Virgin Atlantic will retrofit seven of its Boeing 747 aircraft with the Cobham antenna, which will enable Inmarsat SwiftBroadband (SBB) SATCOM connectivity into the cockpit and cabin. Cobham’s antenna sub-system will be retrofitted to the fleet of seven Boeing 747-400 aircraft through an independent Supplemental Type Certificate (STC). Other STCs are in APSCC Monthly e-Newsletter 4 December 2011 progress to certify the Cobham antenna sub-system for retrofit on a range of aircraft platforms. Cobham SATCOM equipment has been certified for forward fit new production aircraft on Airbus and Boeing platforms: 737, 747, 777, A320 family, and A330/A340. SpeedCast Launches Advanced Maritime Broadband Service November 30, 2011 - SpeedCast Ltd. announced the launch of SeaCast SIGMA, a new managed maritime solution that seamlessly integrates a Ku-band VSAT service, an L-band service, and SpeedCast’s value added services. SeaCast SIGMA represents the latest evolution of SpeedCast’s portfolio of maritime solutions under the brand name SeaCast. SIGMA signifies the sum of all parts, as these comprehensive packages include everything that maritime customers need in one convenient service at a fixed monthly fee. It combines unlimited broadband VSAT connectivity with a back-up L-band service, all required equipment, and a wealth of value added services. iiNet and IPSTAR to Retail NBN Co Satellite Service November 30, 2011 - iiNet and IPSTAR have both signed up as retail providers of NBN Co’s satellite service. The two companies are expected to be ready to offer the NBN satellite service early in the next year. And in a further blurring of service lines, Brisbane-based carrier Skymesh – one of the first two ISPs to trial NBN Co’s interim satellite service – will soon be offering fiber services on the NBN, initially in Queensland but with plans to follow shortly in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania. iiNet and IPSTAR are the first providers to sign up under the second release phase, which will see capacity for up to 20 service providers to offer services. The second release service also requires RSPs to use elements of their own network, including backhaul and traffic management, to connect to an NBN Co PoI located in Sydney. The first release product was provided as an end-to-end service by NBN Co. Gilat Introduces Very Lightweight Ku-Band Broadband Solution for Airborne Applications November 30, 2011 - Gilat Satellite Networks Ltd. announced the introduction of a satcom-on-the-move (SOTM) solution for airborne applications, featuring a very small Ku-band broadband antenna customized for airborne use. The solution is comprised of Gilat's MLT-1000 ruggedized spread spectrum satellite modem, RaySat Antenna Systems' SR-71 - a two-way, on-the-move, flat panel tracking antenna, and Wavestream's compact 40W Ku-band block up-converter (BUC) and power amplifier, part of the AeroStream™ airborne product family, all of which have been tightly integrated to produce a lightweight, compact and low-power terminal that is ideal for airborne applications. Thales Alenia Space and Astrium Achieve Initial System Acceptance on Yahsat Program November 30, 2011 - Thales Alenia Space and Astrium Services have achieved the Initial System Acceptance (ISA) milestone, which was approved by the Al Yah Satellite Communications Company (Yahsat) and the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces. The ISA milestone included the delivery of the anchor station assets at the first Yahsat site in Abu Dhabi, as well as the transmission, telemetry and control facilities on the second site in Al Ain City. A number of end user terminals of various types were delivered with an extensive Network Management System (NMS). The state-of-the-art NMS facility provides remote control of all system hardware, delivering exceptional and instantaneous flexibility that reinforces the system's secure communications capability. Yahsat’s second satellite has completed its ground testing and is ready for launch early in 2012. Inmarsat GX Partners with Gogo for Worldwide Aviation Connectivity Service November 30, 2011 - Inmarsat has selected Gogo as its partner in bringing its Global Xpress satellite service to the commercial aviation market. Gogo will distribute Global Xpress service to the global commercial aviation market as a service provider. Gogo's business aviation subsidiary Aircell has also been chosen by Inmarsat as a distribution partner for the business and government aviation markets. Provider of in-air global satellite connectivity solutions, Gogo will begin in-flight testing of the Global Xpress aeronautical services following the launch of the first Inmarsat-5 satellite, which is scheduled for mid-2013, with Gogo offering regional service in 2013 with services for air transport, business aviation and government customers scheduled worldwide for 2014. BROADCASTING MEASAT Brings Second 3D Channel to Region November 1, 2011 - MEASAT Satellite Systems Sdn. Bhd. (MEASAT) announced that HighTV 3D has joined the MEASAT-3 /3a video neighbourhood. HighTV 3D is the second 3D channel on MEASAT’s HD video neighbourhood. HighTV is a 3D entertainment based channel. The channel distributes a full line-up of 3D HD programming, ranging from dramas and comedies to lifestyle and fashion. HighTV provide tens of millions of viewers with access to over 450 hours of high quality 3D content across Asia and Europe. Arabsat Launches Al Jazeera Sports News Channel November 2, 2011 - The Arab Satellite Communications Organization (Arabsat) has announced the launching of a new dedicated sports news channel, Al Jazeera Sports News, for the first time in the Middle East that coincides with the 15th anniversary of Al Jazeera. The new sports news channel will broadcast hourly news bulletins and 20 sports news programs that will discuss various types of sports on Arabsat. The news program will cover all the major international tournaments and sports events, especially those exclusive to Al Jazeera Sports, such as the Spanish, the Italian, and the French and the European football leagues. The channel will also feature weekly program presenting news about popular sports like basketball, athletics, tennis and motorsports. AT&T and DIRECTV Sign Three-Year Extension Agreement to Deliver AT&T | DIRECTV Service November 3, 2011 - DIRECTV and AT&T signed a three-year extension to their commercial agreement and will continue to offer a co-branded version of DIRECTV’s satellite television service across the 22 states where AT&T offers residential broadband and voice service. This agreement, which has been extended through March 2015, will enable both companies to provide millions of customers with access to an exclusive quadruple-play bundle of AT&T | DIRECTV service and AT&T broadband, home phone and wireless voice services, as well as bundled discounts when AT&T | DIRECTV service is combined with qualifying AT&T services. Through a separate agreement, DIRECTV also sells AT&T broadband services, including AT&T U-verse High Speed Internet, through its sales distribution channels and to existing DIRECTV customers. GlobeCast Brings Trace Sports HD to the Americas November 6, 2011 - GlobeCast has signed a contract with broadcaster Trace to broadcast its new HD channel, Trace Sports HD, on the NSS-806 satellite. The service provided by GlobeCast for Trace includes reception of its European signal in Paris, as well as turnaround uplink and space capacity on the NSS-806 satellite. Trace is a multimedia group and an international brand that specializes in the production and distribution of channels dedicated to urban music and sports celebrities. Trace and GlobeCast have a longstanding working relationship going back several years. YahLive and du Collaborate on Satellite TV Uplink Services November 7, 2011 - YahLive, the UAE based satellite broadcasting company, signed a partnership agreement with du to collaborate on satellite broadcasting services. Under the new agreement, du will establish uplink services to YahLive’s Y1A satellite which broadcasts at 52.5 degrees East. YahLive, a partnership company between Yahsat, the United Arab Emirates-based satellite communications company and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mubadala Development Company and SES, provides multi-purpose satellite communications services to commercial and governmental clients across the Middle East, Africa, Europe and South-West Asia. It has been specifically designed to offer broadcasters opportunities for HD TV distribution and to reach audiences that don’t have access to IPTV and cable networks. Gilat Satcom Selects Tvinci for Satellite-Based OTT TV Offering November 8, 2011 - Gilat Satcom has announced that – together with Tvinci, the Pay Over-the-Top video platform provider – it will offer, for the first time, a full duplex satellite-based OTT TV solution. The solution utilizes Gilat Satcom’s satellite-based connectivity services and Tvinci’s unique Pay OTT platform to deliver accessible OTT TV content across PC, Connected TV, Set-top Box (STB), tablet, and smartphone, to global regions in which broadband connectivity is low. The Tvinci and Gilat combined solution uses satellite communication to deliver video to edge points – for example, at education centers and internet cafes – before being pushed to end-devices Over-the-Top. This enables viewers to consume compelling pay-OTT content such as Hollywood movies and popular TV series across PCs, tablets and smartphones. Al Jazeera Balkans Chooses Eutelsat's W3C Satellite to Launch its New TV Service November 10, 2011 - Eutelsat Communications announces that its W3C satellite has been selected by Al Jazeera Balkans to broadcast its new network to viewers across Bosnia-Hercegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Kosovo and Montenegro. Al Jazeera Balkans has signed a multi-year contract with Eutelsat for capacity on W3C for its new channel which will go live tomorrow at 6 pm. Al Jazeera Balkans is the 23rd to launch in the Al Jazeera network. (GTSS) and Asia Broadcast Satellite (ABS) announced that they have signed a deal valued at over US$ 125 million for multiple transponders on a condosat and lease basis to augment its multiservice capacity on ABS-2. Subsequent to the multiple transponder lease agreement announced in 2009, GTSS has developed its platform services, including TV channels contribution and "Raduga TV" Russian and CIS DTH business, which led GTSS to make a strategic investment to purchase additional condosat transponders on ABS-2, scheduled to be launched in early 2013. ABS-2 is currently under construction and will have 89 active C, Ku and Ka-band transponders across 10 different beams with a design life of 15 years. It will be located at ABS' prime orbital location of 75E. ABS-2 is specifically designed for a wide range of services including DTH, Cable TV distribution, VSAT services, Data networks and Telecommunications services. ABS-2 will provide expansion capacity to existing ABS-1 customers. High TV 3D Launches via ASTRA 23.5 Degrees East November 15, 2011 - SES has signed a capacity agreement with High TV 3D, a worldwide 3D general entertainment channel, primarily for cable distribution. High TV 3D will be distributed via the ASTRA 23.5 degrees East orbital position (11778.00 MHz, vertical), benefiting from its optimal European footprint coverage and household reach. ASTRA 23.5 degrees East is the home of various international 3D channels such as Brava 3D, Penthouse 3D and the ASTRA 3D demo channel. The 3D programming of High TV 3D ranges from entertainment news and travel programs to drama, comedy, fitness and movies as well as a slate of in-house productions such as reality shows. High TV 3D will broadcast 400 hours of native 3D content during its first year and is creating more than 500 hours of quality 3D content for each year to come. M7 Group Contracts New ASTRA Capacity for Belgium November 21, 2011 - SES has signed a capacity and uplink agreement with M7 Group, the Luxembourg-based satellite television provider, for distribution via ASTRA’s 19.2 degrees East orbital position. The newly contracted capacity on 19.2 degrees East will be used for the DTH distribution of French speaking channels for the Belgian market, including the RTBF channels La Une and La Deux, as well as the RTL Group owned channels RTL TVi, RTL Club and Plug RTL. The channels will be included in the TéléSAT offering, the M7 Group owned satellite television brand for Wallonia. From January 2012 onwards, the M7 Group plans to expand its TéléSAT offering at 19.2 degrees East by the addition of the RTBF channel La Trois. GMV to Provide the Paz Satellite Control Center November 3, 2011 - The mission control center of the new Spanish satellite Paz, due for launch at the end of next year, will be provided by GMV. The contract includes all platform-planning and image-capturing aspects, orbital control and antenna pointing plus management and monitoring of communications and onboard equipment. GMV will also provide the radar-image-distribution and user-management system. Paz is a military earth-observation satellite orbiting at a height of 514 kilometers above the poles. It has been designed for applications of surveillance, high resolution mapping, border control, tactical support on foreign missions, crisis and risk management, assessment of natural disasters, environmental control and maritime surveillance. Each day it will cover over 300,000 square kilometers of the earth’s surface. ASTRIUM Contracted to Build DIRECTV 15 Communications Satellite November 4, 2011 - ASTRIUM has been selected by DIRECTV to design and manufacture DIRECTV 15, a new high-power telecommunications satellite to provide back-up capacity and fleet expansion for television services to US customers in homes and businesses. Based on ASTRIUM’s highly reliable Eurostar E3000 platform, the new satellite, DIRECTV 15, will have a payload comprising 30 high power transponders in Ku-band, 24 transponders in Ka-band, 18 transponders in Reverse Band, and will be able to operate from up to five orbital locations from 99 degrees West to 119 degrees West, covering Continental US (CONUS), Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. DIRECTV 15 is scheduled for launch in 2014. The spacecraft will have a launch mass of 6,300 kg, an electrical power of 16 kW and is designed to deliver more than 15 years of in-orbit operations. Launcher Build-up Begins for Third Ariane 5 Mission November 8, 2011 - The Ariane 5 for Arianespace’s third flight to service the International Space Station has begun its build-up at the Spaceport, preparing this heavy-lift launcher for an early 2012 mission from French Guiana with a European Automated Transfer Vehicle cargo resupply vessel. During activity in the Spaceport’s Launcher Integration Building, the Ariane 5’s core cryogenic stage was removed from its protective shipping container and raised into position over one of two operational mobile launch tables. This cleared the way for rollout of the two solid propellant boosters, which will be mated to the core stage. It is to be followed by integration of the EPS storable propellant upper stage and vehicle equipment bay, completing the basic assembly for the Ariane 5 ES version used on missions with Automated Transfer Vehicles. ILS and Eutelsat Announce Launch of the W3D Satellite in 2013 November 9, 2011 - International Launch Services (ILS) and Eutelsat announced a contract for the launch of the W3D satellite into geostationary transfer orbit on an ILS Proton in 2013. The W3D satellite is being built on the Spacebus 4000 C3 platform by Thales Alenia Space with a launch mass of approximately 5400 kg and a 15 year design life. W3D will be located at 7 degrees East to deliver high power Ku-band coverage of Europe and Turkey for DTH reception, extensive Ku-band coverage across Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia for video links and data networks, and Ku-band coverage of Sub-Saharan Africa and Indian Ocean islands for telecommunications and Internet services. APSCC Monthly e-Newsletter 8 December 2011 Thales Alenia Space to Build Four More Satellites for O3b Constellation November 10, 2011 - Thales Alenia Space signed a contract with O3b Networks Limited to deliver four more satellites for their Medium Earth Orbit constellation. These satellites are in addition to the eight already ordered from Thales Alenia Space. The first group of eight satellites successfully passed their Critical Design Review in May of this year and the system is on track for an initial launch in the first quarter of 2013, with service expected to start in the second quarter of that year. Positioned at an altitude of 8,000 km which is four times closer to the earth than geo-stationary satellites, these Ka-band satellites will offer high speed, low cost, low-latency Internet and telecommunications services to people and businesses in emerging markets. O3b Networks will supply trunking and mobile backhaul connectivity to telecom operators at speeds comparable to those offered by Fiber providers. AsiaSat Selects Space Systems/Loral to Provide Two Communications Satellites November 10, 2011 - Space Systems/Loral (SS/L) and Asia Satellite Telecommunications Company Limited (AsiaSat) announced the signing of two construction agreements for two communications satellites, AsiaSat 6 and AsiaSat 8. The contracts include AsiaSat 6 with a C-band payload and AsiaSat 8, with both Ku-band and Ka-band. The two satellites will serve Asia, the Middle East and Australasia and are designed on the decade's proven SS/L 1300 satellite platform which provides the flexibility for a broad range of applications and technology advances. The satellites are planned to be launched by early 2014. With these new contracts Space Systems/Loral has secured six satellite contract awards for 2011. AsiaSat 6 will have 28 high-power C-band transponders while AsiaSat 8 will have 24 Ku-band transponders and a Ka-band beam. Arianespace to Launch Satellite for DIRECTV Latin America November 14, 2011 - Arianespace and DIRECTV announced a new launch contract for a satellite providing services for DIRECTV Latin America. The launch will take place in 2014 from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana on an Ariane 5. DIRECTV has exercised an option in their multi-launch contract with Arianespace for the launch of an additional satellite that will provide services for DIRECTV Latin America. Arianespace has already been contracted to launch DIRECTV-14 and 15 within the same time frame. This new contract is the 9th signed in 2011 by Arianespace for the launch of a commercial satellite. DIRECTV will utilize the satellite capacity to expand the delivery of high definition, 3-D television and cinema programming across Latin America. The satellite, under construction at Space Systems/Loral for DIRECTV, will have a mass of approximately 6.3 metric tons and is scheduled for delivery in 2014. The satellite will be located at the 95 degrees West orbital location. Success of the 1,779th Launch of Soyuz November 14, 2011 - The 1,779th flight of a Soyuz launch vehicle was performed from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Arianespace and its Russian partners report that Soyuz TMA-22 manned transport spacecraft was accurately placed on the target orbit for another mission to the International Space Station. This was the fourteenth Soyuz family mission in 2011. With the introduction of Soyuz at the Guiana Space Center (CSG) and its successful historic launch on October 21, 2011, this famed Russian medium-class launch vehicle became an integral part of the European launch vehicle fleet, together with the heavy-lift Ariane 5 and the lightweight Vega. Offered to the commercial market, the Soyuz in French Guiana is Europe's reference medium-class launch vehicle for governmental and commercial missions. Orbital-Built Intelsat 18 Communications Satellite Successfully Completes In-Orbit Testing November 15, 2011 - Orbital Sciences Corporation announced that the Intelsat 18 satellite has completed its inorbit testing and has been handed over to Intelsat S.A. Intelsat 18 is to be operated at 180 degrees East longitude, where it will provide C-band communications services to eastern Asia, the Pacific and the western United States, and Ku-band communications services to French Polynesia, New Caledonia, eastern Australia and the United States. Intelsat 18 was launched aboard a Zenit rocket from the Baikonour Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan in early October. Two Astrium Space Systems Head for Mars aboard the Rover November 17, 2011 - NASA’s new Mars rover, 'Curiosity', will be launched on 25 November from Cape Canaveral in Florida on an Atlas V rocket. Dubbed the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), the main objective of this mission is to assess Mars’ ‘habitability’, in other words whether the planet is or ever was able to support microbial life. SpaceX Searches for New Commercial Launch Site November 18, 2011 - Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) is seeking a new launch site to meet increasing demand from commercial customers. SpaceX already has an active launch pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida and is currently developing a new launch site at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The company also operates a rocket development facility in McGregor, Texas. Four U.S. states – Virginia, California, Alaska, and Florida – have active launch sites. Given the complexity of developing a rocket launch site, SpaceX will be pursuing several options concurrently in order to fully understand the pros and cons of each location. China Launches Two Experimental Satellites November 20, 2011 - China put two satellites into orbit from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China's Gansu Province. The satellites, Chuangxin 1-03 and Shiyan Satellite 4 were launched on a Long March 2D carrier rocket. The Chuangxin 1-03, developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, will be used to collect and relay water conservancy, hydrological and meteorological data and data for power supply and disaster relief from monitoring stations. The Shiyan Satellite 4 will be used for experiments on space technologies and environment probe. Developed by the Chinese Research Institute of Space Technology, it is the country's fourth technology experiment satellite. The launch was the 151th of China's Long March series of rockets. Thales Alenia Space to Build Turkmenistan’s First Satellite November 23, 2011 - Thales Alenia Space signed a contract with Turkmenistan Ministry of communication for the design, manufacture and delivery of the first Turkmenistan Telecommunication Satellite. This contract also includes the ground segment means for two Satellite Ground Control Stations, and all its associated services. This high performance satellite within the Spacebus 4000 family for which 16 satellites are currently in use in orbit, will enable Turkmenistan to operate its first National System of Satellite Communications in order to secure and enhance Turkmenistan communication means. The satellite will be based on Thales Alenia Space Spacebus C2 platform. The launch is scheduled in 2014 for a 15 years lifetime. The satellite, of around 10 Kw power and above 4.5 tons’ launch mass, will carry Ku transponders covering large beams over Central Asia Region. ILS Proton Successfully Launches the AsiaSat 7 Satellite November 25, 2011 - International Launch Services (ILS) successfully carried the AsiaSat 7 satellite into orbit on an ILS Proton for Asia Satellite Telecommunications Company Limited (AsiaSat). This was the 5th commercial mission of the year for ILS and the 8th Proton launch so far this year. Built by Space Systems/Loral, AsiaSat 7 is designed to replace AsiaSat 3S at the orbital location of 105.5 degrees East providing television broadcast and VSAT network services across the Asia-Pacific region. This new generation satellite will carry 28 C-band, 17 Kuband transponders and a Ka-band payload. The regional C-band beam covers over 50 countries throughout Asia, the Middle East, Australasia and Central Asia. ISS-Reshetnev-built Glonass-M Successfully Injected into Orbit November 28, 2011 - The Glonass-M No.46 satellite manufactured by Academician M.F. Reshetnev Information Satellite Systems was successfully launched on November 28, 2011. The Krasnokamensk Satellite System Mission Control Center together with the ISS-Reshetnev Information Computation Center has commenced testing the satellite on-board equipment. Upon completion of the test phase the spacecraft will be maneuvered to its target orbit and then put into operation. This is already the fourth launch performed this year within the scope of the federal target program “Global Navigation Satellite System”. The next-generation Glonass-K satellite was placed into orbit in February, 2011. At present it is undergoing flight tests. Later this year the GLONASS constellation was enlarged by 4 more Glonass-M satellites – one was launched in October and another three in November. Mitsubishi Electric Develops C-band GaN High-Electron Mobility Transistors for Satellite Earth Stations November 29, 2011 - Mitsubishi Electric Corporation has developed two Gallium Nitride (GaN) High-Electron Mobility Transistor (HEMT) C-band (4-8GHz) amplifiers for satellite earth stations. The MGFC50G5867 and MGFC47G5867, featuring power outputs of an industry-leading 100W and 50W, respectively, will ship on a sample basis beginning January 10, 2012. Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) amplifiers have been commonly employed in microwave power transmitters. In recent years, however, Gallium Nitride (GaN) amplifiers have become increasingly popular due to their high breakdown-voltage and power density, high saturated electron speed and ability to contribute to power saving and the downsizing of power transmitter equipment. SES-4, which will be the largest, most powerful satellite in the SES fleet, is designed to expand and enhance the company's ability to provide Fixed Satellite Services (FSS) to the Americas, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. The spacecraft is a hybrid C- and Ku-band satellite that will replace NSS-7 at 338 degrees East longitude. China Launches Remote-sensing Satellite Yaogan XIII November 30, 2011 - China successfully launched the remote-sensing satellite Yaogan XIII from Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in the northern province of Shanxi. The satellite was carried into space aboard a Long March 2C carrier rocket. The satellite will be used to conduct scientific experiments, carry out surveys on land resources, monitor crop yields and help with natural disaster-reduction and prevention. The Long March 2C carrier rocket was produced by China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation. This flight is the 152th mission of LongMarch-series carrier rockets.
