GOAL
o To diagram and better understand alternation of generations in a moss plant.
MATERIALS
o Paper
o Colored Pencils
o Diagrams of the moss life cycle (277 in text)
PROCEDURE
1. Diagram and label all stages moss life cycle.
2. Be sure to include all the following
a. Draw and label the Sporophyte Stage
i. Zygote
ii. Beginning growth of sporophyte
iii. Ending growth of sporophyte
b. Draw and label the Gametophyte Stage
i. Spores being released
ii. Spores germinating
iii. Gametophyte growing
iv. Male and female reproductive structures
v. Sperm fertilizing the egg (need to show water droplets where this
happens)
3. Be sure to show that this is a cycle (best to do drawing in a circle rather than a straight
line)
4. Be sure all stages are listed in the diagram (stages are listed from A – D in your text)
5. Use pen to label and trace drawing.
6. Drawing will be graded according to rubric below.
