Recruitment and retention committee BCPSEA/BCTF – need a committee
Need to improve technology to communicate better

 Reduced by one cohort this year
 Enrollment generally up
 Dual degree program with science – come to Education in second year to do a
practicum and if like it go forward with a degree in each area
 4 year concurrent degree planned TQS 4
 Education minor
 West Kootney education program is on this year
 Criminal record checks are with the Ministry – Attorney General very smooth.
48 hour turn around
 Adult educators Vancouver and Surrey – 2 year program can do program and
keep working.

 Online CRC – smooth. 1 glitch if have two students with first and last name
 Enrollment is up especially in special – paraprofessional, Adult Education
Kelowna. Other districts asking for programs. French is increasing.
 Aboriginal focus group is going well
 Suzanne D. temp dean – search on again
 Financial restraint has meant Faculty Associates reduced to 8 months from 9
months

 Program changes many years. Moving to 4 year concurrent elementary.
Some sec. are after degree program.
 Middle years program going well
 Secondary moving to 16 month program with an optional summer program to
get a degree, otherwise a diploma.
 Trying to be responsive to the needs of the community
 Change is slow – trying to meet needs of district
 Cranbrook moving to 4 year has caused some challenges but under
discussion
 DSTC program in Campbell River – Lorna Williams is spearheading this and
wants to develop a degree program in Saanich area
 Aboriginal course compulsory for all students
 TILMA agreement has us looking at necessary changes. Is this going
nationwide?
 Electronic portfolio going well. Moodle program going well – how we develop
program
 Distance course work is being developed
 Not much employment opportunities for graduates in Victoria area so
promoting rural placements.
 Trans. of seniority has disadvantage some of the young teachers.
 Numbers are consistent but applications are down

 Teachers on letter of permission especially journeymen need to be able to
take summers only teaching programs
 UBC is recognizing Chef Red Seal for 60 credits
 Aboriginal teachers are in more supply in Fort St. John
 Professional Development for newly trained teachers – when get trained get
recruited to the south
 Target for retired teachers to come to the north – 2 year package
 We recruit from East and TQS problem

 Got rid of concurrent program
 Started secondary program

 K – 7 cohort – 32 want to go to before in July
 Debate on secondary. July 10 debate on how that is going to go. Suggest 4
core courses some argument for just Ma and Sc.
5. EDAS presentationRon Pound presented material outlining the Employment Data and Analysis System that
is being developed for the extraction of 76 data elements reflecting all school district
employees. Extracted quarterly from each district, the data warehouse will assist school
districts, the province and university in their individual and collective workforce planning.
The go live date is schedule for January 2009. BCPSEA will house the data and will be
producing regular reports on the workforce. The governance of the data has not yet
been fully developed. More information will follow.

BCTF/BCPSEA/Ministry collect data 14 years ago pin point rural urban issues
SERC study from north last year
Where we are now is where we wanted to be back then
Cusp of collecting data that would be useful
Data will be useful / come to yearly
SFU – this com. doesn’t drive our admissions policy. Potential now possible.
Need the ministry and other players.
With no min people here has been a change in the attitude to the K – 12 system
UNBC – everything had been anecdotal – none of the acronyms were talking to
one another. Spent lots of time
Discuss data and then decide if we move forward
What story do we want to tell
Shared purpose of why we get together
Cost – travel for partners
Ida – value of the committee for BCSTA – good for relationship building – Build
BCSTA/ BCPSEA
Sharing issues of BCSTA with partners
Great to know where teachers are going out of province and Canada
Cathy – this is a good place to get us out of the narrow view of teacher education

Strong message of ABCDE – what information from each university
We need the more global view of what is happening for supply and demand.

