Williston-Elko High School English 3 Curriculum Guide and Course Outline This English 3 class is designed to improve and polish students' ability to read a variety of texts, plan and write for a wide variety of purposes and audiences, apply standard English rules and usage, speak effectively and listen responsively, and develop and apply critical thinking skills. Students in this course will examine American literature to determine and analyze common themes among literary selection. They will read a multitude of literature from each literary period while studying the changing cultural beliefs and values in American history and literature. Advanced reading, speaking, listening and writing skills will continue to be developed and refined. Students will be expected to produce several analytical and argumentative papers and make formal and informal presentations to the class. In addition to the above listed objectives which are a key component of the Common Core 11-12 ELA Standards, special attention will be given to ensure the students’ success on college-entry tests such as SAT and ACT.
