Adaptive Driver Training and Safety Assessment Program
The goals of the program are:
to provide safety assessments for persons with disabilities, elderly
persons, doctors, and caregivers which give concrete information
about the abilities of persons to drive safely on the road;
to provide training to persons with physical or cognitive
disabilities who would become safe drivers after training;
to provide training to persons with physical limitations (such as
amputee, paraplegic, quadriplegic) who can continue to drive with
their disabilities but require adaptive equipment and training to
safely use the equipment;
and to provide teen-aged persons with disabilities opportunities to
have on the road driver training with adaptive equipment, allowing
them to pass the on road evaluation conducted by the DMV. The DMV
requires 14 hours of on the road training for persons acquiring a
first time drivers license. There is no training of this sort
provided by the public schools or any other facility for adolescents
with disabilities.
The evaluation
The program offers a 2 hour evaluation to determine the individual’s
ability to drive. If the evaluation is to determine the individual’s
safety on the road, a report is provided to the referral source after
the evaluation.
If the assessment is for adaptive needs,
recommendations are made for training and equipment after the
evaluation.
The evaluation is conducted by an Occupational Therapist who is
dually licensed as a commercial driving instructor and is recognized
by the Association of Driver Educators for the Disabled (ADED) as a
Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist. The evaluation includes

In-car training
In-car training is provided by an Occupational Therapist who is dually
licensed as a commercial driving instructor by the Department of Motor
Vehicles and certified by the Association of Driving Educators for the
Disabled (ADED) as a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist.
Clients use a vehicle that is owned by the hospital for their training.
Riverside Rehabilitation Institute will provide any adaptive equipment
needed. The car and equipment is available for the road test conducted by
the DMV although the Occupational Therapist cannot ride along.
In-car training varies depending on whether the client’s disability is
neurological or physical, whether they need safety training or complete
driving instruction and whether they need training for use of adaptive
equipment or not. Emphasis is placed on proficient maneuvering (with
adaptive equipment if needed), basic driving skills and safety.
Instruction begins with basic driving skills including steering, breaking
and acceleration. As a person progresses with their training, the
instructor will introduce signals, corners, and other obstacles.
Eventually, an introduction of heavier traffic scenarios is appropriate
with driving in higher speed zones. Finally, the instructor will provide
training in heavy traffic areas such as tunnels and bridges. After
completion of training, the client will have appropriate knowledge and
driving skills needed to pass the on-road evaluation at the Department of
Motor Vehicles.

Tutorial Training: one-to-one instructor/consumer basis
The length of training will vary according to the individual’s needs.
Tuition cost per hour per consumer is $20.00 at the office.
*If the tutor has to travel to the consumer’s home the
cost is $25.00 per hour.
Other costs: Students, who are enrolled in college classes, usually
supply their own text. Tidewater Tutoring is able to
supply many materials from their own array of books,
tapes, etc. However, occasionally, they might need to
purchase a text for student, such as a book for the SAT
or GED test prep. In such cases, materials could cost
from $20 to $40.
