Ms. Goldman’s Scope and Sequence for Gifted Lyceum Sophomores
1st Semester
Introduction and Stories with Holes (2 Days)
Objectives:
1. Students will learn the expectations and the schedule of the class.
2. The class will analyze partial stories until they find the solutions.
Free Verse Poetry Based upon Theme Pictures (3 Days)
Objectives:
1. The class will view theme pictures, like trees, and verbally describe them.
2. Students will use theme pictures to create free verse poetry.
Digital Storytelling of Poem or Story (14 Days)
Objectives:
1. The class will learn how to use a storytelling program.
2. Students will create original computerized movies. They will do voice
overs of their original short poems or stories. They will accompany their
literary work with music and images, including digital photos.
Epidemics that Threaten Current and Future Life (10 Days)
Objectives:
1. Groups will research epidemics that threaten or could threaten life.
2. Groups will create power point presentations, in order to organize and
share their findings with the class in a visually engaging way.
3. From their peers, students will learn about many epidemics that exist.
4. The class will learn about epidemics from a guest scientist.
5. Students will evaluate all presentations, including their own.
The Enlightenment and Mozart (21 Days)
Objectives:
1. Students will read and analyze various texts regarding Enlightenment
ideas and thinkers within historical context.
2. Via discussion and other collaborative work students will gain a greater
understanding of Enlightenment ideas and thinkers as well as their impact
upon western societies and governments.
3. Students will read, perform, write about, listen to, and watch examples of
Mozart’s works for these reasons: to assess how Enlightenment,
Josephine, and freemasonry ideals shaped Mozart’s creations, and to
acquire a deeper appreciation of his music.
2nd Semester, 3rd Quarter
Logic Game: Sudoku (3 days)
Objectives:
1. Students will use their analytical skills to determine patterns.
2. Students will find logical solutions to mathematical problems.
Fractured Fairytales (8 Days)
Objectives:
1. The class will read fractured fairytales to gain an understanding of them.
2. Each group will research and create an alternative ending for a fairytale.
3. Groups will perform their fractured fairytales via Readers’ Theater.
Workable Peace: Role Play (14 Days)
Objectives:
1. Students will gain knowledge about the historical conflict.
2. Students will learn and play their roles with historical accuracy.
3. Groups will prepare arguments and practice negotiation skills.
4. Students will relate their conflict resolution experience to other global
conflicts.
5. Students will evaluate the Role Play and their experiences.
2nd Semester, 4th Quarter
Talk with Karen Shankman, College Counselor (1 Day)
Objectives:
1. Students will become familiar with a valuable resource at Maine East.
2. Many will begin to think outside of the box when it comes to their futures.
Independent Projects (24 Days)
Objectives:
1. With teacher consent, students choose independent projects.
2. With teacher guidance, students plan, research, and create projects.
3. Students share their products with the class.
4. Students evaluate their own process of creation and all projects.
Note: On all class days, usually M-W-F, students will take vocabulary quizzes
and tests from their vocabulary books that must be purchased in the bookstore.
