IT IS IMPORTANT TO MEMORIZE THE DEFINITIONS OF: kilo-, centi-, & milliWrite the definition of kilo- 1000 centi-0.01, & milli- 0.001
Here is a helpful rule to remember when converting in the metric system: When
converting from a small unit to a big unit, divide by the appropriate multiple of 10
(10,100,1000,etc.) When converting from a big unit to a small unit, multiply by the
appropriate multiple of 10 (10,100,1000,etc.). You can use the chart above!
How many multiples of 10 is kilo- from deci-? 4 so you would multiply by 10,000
How many multiples of 10 is milli- from hecta-? 5 so you would divide by 100,000
How many multiples of 10 is centi- from milli-? 1 so you would multiply by 10
How many multiples of 10 is (meter) from kilo- 3 so you would divide by 1000
For the following problems, write multiply or divide in the first blank and a multiple of
10 (10, 100, 1000, 10000, etc.) in the second blank.
If you are converting from milli- to centi- you should divide by 10
If you are converting from (meter, liter, gram) to kilo- you should divide by 1000
If you are converting by deca- to centi- you should multiply by 1000
If you are converting from kilo- to (meter, liter, gram) you should multiply by 1000
If you are converting from kilo- to milli- you should multiply by 1,000,000
If you are converting from deci- to (meter, liter, gram-) you should divide by 10
Now try these problems:
7. How many milliliters is 10 liters? 10,000
8. How many centimeters is 220 kilometers? 2,200,000
9. How many kilograms is 0.98 grams 0.00098
10. How many milliliters is 10,005 liters 10,005,000
11. How many meters is 100,200 millimeters 100.2
12. A Tricky Question: How do you convert 100 liters to 10 kilometers? You can't!
