Develop an understanding of
And apply proportionality

A comparison of 2 quantities by division.
◦ a:b, a/b, a to b
4:3, 4/3, 4 to 3
◦ Ratios can express part to part, part to whole, or
whole to part relationships
◦ Often written as fractions in simplest form
◦ Ratios that have the same value are called
equivalent ratios
Write the ratio as a fraction in simplest form
1) 6 boys to 4 girls 2) 8 students to 20 desks



A ratio that compares 2 quantities with
different kinds of units.
When a rate is simplified so that the
denominator is 1, it is called a Unit Rate.
◦ Useful to compare
Find each unit rate
1) $300 for 6 hours 2) 220 miles on 8 gallons
3) Which is the better buy
12 oz. for $3.28 or 16 oz. for $4.04


A rate that describes how one quantity
changes in relation to another.
◦ Usually expressed as a unit rate

Example pg.293

The rate of change between any two points
on a line in a coordinate plane.
 Tells how steep the line is, it is constant
slope = change in y
change in x
vertical change (up, down)
horizontal change (left, right)


To convert from one customary unit to
another:
◦ Multiply from a larger unit to a smaller unit
◦ Divide from a smaller unit to a larger unit


You could also multiply by using a conversion
rate.
For example 6 feet x 12 inches = 72 in.
1
1 foot
COVERSIONS
• Length
• Capacity
1 foot (ft) = 12 inches (in.)
1 cup (c) =8 fluid ounces (fl oz)
1 yard (yd) = 3 ft
1 pint (pt) = 2 c
= 36 in.
1 mile (mi) = 5280 ft
= 1760 yd
= 16 fl oz
1 quart (qt) = 2 pt
=4c
= 32 fl oz
 Weight
1 gallon (gal) = 4 qt
1 pound (lb) = 16 ounces (oz)
= 8 pt
1 ton ( T ) = 2,000 lb
= 16 c
= 32,000 oz
= 128 fl oz
