APPENDIX A
BMCC ACADEMIC SENATE
RESOLUTION TO INSTITUTE CREDIT FOR LIFE EXPERIENCE KNOWLEDGE (C-FLEK)
Whereas, Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) currently awards credit, waives
prerequisites and allows advance placement with departmental approval for life experience
knowledge;
Whereas, some form of Credit for Life Experience Knowledge (C-FLEK) has already been
established within CUNY: BMCC, College of Staten Island, Kingsborough Community College,
Queens College, CUNY School of Professional Studies, Medgar Evers, John Jay, and CUNY BA;
Whereas, BMCC is committed to enabling and encouraging students to make sensible and
informed choices in setting their academic, career and personal goals;
Be it resolved that,
BMCC shall implement a department based, but college-wide, Credit for Life Experience
Knowledge (C-FLEK) program; and
Departments (via their curriculum committees) shall be encouraged to evaluate their current
programs to determine where awarding credit, waiving prerequisites and/or allowing advance
placement based on life experience knowledge might be appropriate1; and
BMCC (via admissions or other appropriate administrative departments/programs) shall
provide published information on the requirements and procedures for C-FLEK and shall
actively promote C-FLEK through web and print means.
______________________
Current college policy states that the maximum number of credits awarded as a combination
of transfer credits and credits for life experience knowledge cannot exceed a total of thirty
(30) credits towards a BMCC degree.
1
Departmental evaluations could include:
 The total allowable number of C-FLEK for each program
 The courses for which C-FLEK will be allowed
 The appropriate measures for awarding credit for life experience knowledge for each
identified course [such as College Level Examination Program (CLEP) and Advanced
Placement (AP) Scores where applicable, appropriate portfolio and/or challenge
exams with clearly defined scores for awarding credit)
 A written plan for administering the department C-FLEK program, including a
protocol for collaboration between the department, admissions and the registrar.
APPENDIX B
BMCC ACADEMIC SENATE ADMISSIONS COMMITTEE
RESOLUTION ON
ACADEMIC SENATE REPRESENTATIVES
TO THE ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETINGS
Whereas, the college faculty are to partake in the enrollment management according to the
Bylaws;
Whereas, the Academic Senate Admissions Committee needs access to student data regarding
recruitment, admissions, and retention in order to carry out its charge effectively;
Whereas, the BMCC Enrollment Management Committee deals with such information, but
currently includes no faculty representatives;
Whereas, the CUNY university-wide enrollment management committee has a faculty
representative in the committee;
Be it resolved that the Enrollment management committee include a Senator and an alternate
designated by the Academic Senate as voting members of the Enrollment Management
committee, and
Be it further resolved that the chairs of the Enrollment Management committee inform the
Senate’s designated representative(s) reasonably far in advance of the dates, times, places, and
agendas of the meetings of the Enrollment Management Committee, and facilitate their full
participation in the committee.
APPENDIX C
RESOLUTION ON THE FACULTY EXPERIENCE SURVEY
Whereas BMCC scored poorly on the UFS FES;
Whereas the Academic Senate charged an ad hoc committee to interpret the results of the
FES;
Whereas the Academic Senate further charged the committee to suggest solutions to some of
the problems revealed by the FES;
Whereas the FES ad hoc committee deemed there needs to be more communication between
the faculty and the administration;
Resolve that the Academic Senate develop an annual evaluation of the deans, vice-presidents,
and the president.
Resolve that the Academic Senate establish an archive on overrides of Academic Senate votes
by the President;
Resolve that the Academic Senate recommend that the President agree to appear before the
Academic Senate to explain any override of an Academic Senate vote.
Resolve that the Academic Senate recommend that the President release the college's allfunds budget (tax-levy, discretionary and soft money funds) to the Academic Senate Budget
Committee annually.
APPENDIX D
RESOLUTION ON SHARED GOVERNANCE
Whereas, it is crucial to a policy of shared governance that the faculty, staff and
administration meet regularly; and
Whereas, the Academic Senate passes resolutions that require discussion with, and
implementation by, the administration and staff; be it
Resolved that the President of the college and members of the Cabinet s/he deems
appropriate, meet with the Chair of Academic Senate and members of the Academic Senate
Executive Committee s/he deems appropriate once each month the BMCC Academic Senate is
in session.
