5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
Flash Point :
None
Autoignition temperature :
640C
Explosive limits in air :
Lower 13%
(% by volume)
Upper 25%
Fires : Use water fog or alcohol resistant foam.
Self-contained breathing apparatus should be worn.
Spray drums with water to cool to prevent bursting.
Toxic gases (hydrogen chloride with small amounts of chlorine and phosgene) will be
evolved in a fire.
6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
Ventilate the area. If necessary wear self-contained breathing apparatus.
NOTE Vapour is heavier than air and will collect in low areas.
Absorb on sand or earth and store in a closed metal drum.
7. HANDLING AND STORAGE
Avoid breathing the vapour. The vapour is heavier than air and may collect in low area. Do not
enter without breathing apparatus.
The vapour is decomposed by flames and hot surfaces to form toxic gases such as phosgene.
Store in original containers. Do not store in aluminium, magnesium, zinc or their alloys, or with
rubbers or plastics.
8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION
Maximum Exposure Limit

Contact with eyes gives irritation and pain with possible corneal damage.
Skin contact has a defatting action leading to dermatitis.
Inhalation for prolonged periods produces signs of narcosis and may be fatal. Headaches etc may be
caused with concentrations of 500ppm.
Methylene chloride is a Category 3 Carcinogen.
