The Coca Cola project The “Coca Cola – American solution or American pollution” was made by the Danish teacher Diana Bergen Sørensen, who participated in the seminar in Linz in November 2004. Below is an extract from the initial planning with keywords for the four dimensions from the Active matrix planning model: 1. Pedagogical dimension History Been around for years Medicin - past and present The American Wave Math Measuring Price English American influence Commercials 2. Social dimension History/English Socialization Being part of a group Trends Both sides of a story Positive/negative Math Statistics Health 3. Political dimension History/English Influence of a huge company The American Invasion Math Economy 4. Value/Ethical dimension Always see things from every angle It’s a way of thinking The ”Expanded health” thought The media influence The PowerPoint presentation Coca_Cola.ppt also shows an outline of the project. The pupils worked for almost four weeks with the project in most of the lessons in Danish, English, Math and Physics. Here is one of the activities in Danish: Production of commercial Think of the target group. Find a name and a logo. A drawing must be approved by the teacher. Find a slogan – English or Danish. Think of colours, place, composition, eye catcher, text/language and type of text (and target group). Outline must be approveds. The final commercial is to be made in colour – 1 copy for the teacher. Deadline: Friday the 27th of January. The Coca Cola project was carried out with a 7th grade in January 2006, where the subjects Danish, English, History, Chemistry and Maths were involved. The team of teachers produced the list below for the pupils for tasks to do. The pupils had both very specific things to do, but there were also a possibility of working in a more free way, where they could produce their own exercises. List of materials/tasks for the pupils: Coca Cola content Compare the consumption in Denmark with the consumption in the other Scandinavian countries Compare the content of different beverages Calculate the dimensions and capacities of different containers Make different calculations of prices and differences in percentage Make calculations of tax Look at market shares Make calculations of different beverages Make calculations of different types of packing and use of materials Look at ways of transportation History It has not been possible to translate the attached pdf-documents into English, but here is a small explanation of the content: The file CocaCola-projekt.pdf is a collection of different statistics and basic information about the product and other kinds of beverages: Content of sugar and fat Ways of packing Ways of transportation Sales figures Tax The files CocaColaprojekt_regneark.pdf and CocaCola-projekt_regneark_m.pdf give directions for using a spreadsheet in connection with the project. The small film was made just before the project ended and gives an idea of how the pupils worked with the project.
