December Meeting Topic: Statistical Opportunities in Grades 6 through 12
The San Antonio Chapter of the American Statistical Association’s December meeting will feature a
presentation by Linda Gann, Secondary Mathematics Instructional Specialist, Northside Independent
School District. We will meet for refreshments at 6:30 pm and then hear from our guest speaker at 7:00
pm. Please distribute the attached flyer to coworkers and others who might be interested. We would like
to extend a special invitation to area high school math and statistics teachers.
San Antonio ASA Chapter functions are always open to nonmembers and guests. Please consider
bringing a colleague or friend!

Abstract: The presentation will include discussion of the following four topics: 1) AP Statistics, 2) CRS –
College Readiness Standards, 3) TEKS – Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Grades 6-12, and 4)
The new proposed 4th year of math course (involving the study of statistics for the common consumer of
information).
Parking: Between 6:30 - 9:30 pm campus visitors can park without a permit in either Lot 4 or Lot 3
Faculty/Staff A or B spaces (but NOT the 24 Hr Reserved spaces).

UIW Offers New Graduate Program in Research Statistics
University of the Incarnate Word is offering a new master's degree program in research statistics, geared
towards those interested in a career as a research statistician. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of
Agriculture, the Research Scholars Program will select 11 students in the Spring 2009. One student will
receive a full scholarship and the rest will get partial scholarships. The deadline to apply is Jan. 6, 2009.
