Northgate is … baby bundles
This years baby competition was bigger and better with hundreds of entries proving its popularity among shoppers. The competition
was open to new borns up to seven years. Foto First set up in Centre Point Court from 28 August until 3 September to take photos of
the cutest babies for entry submission. The competition, held in Boardmans Court on 8 September, was MC’ed by MC G, shoppers
were entertained by BOKI (South African 2011 Idol) and entries judged by celebrity judges: Sharon Arendse (wife of Andre Arendse),
Zethu (Mamma’s & Pappa’s magazine), Nikki Hattingh (professional magazine model) and Kobus Weyers (General Manager). In
addition to the competition there was kids entertainment such as a balloon sculptor, face painter and sand art. Goodie Glove
(mascot of the Goodie Glove educational children books) also made a meet and greet appearance and sponsored superb books as
prizes!
This success of this competition was evident in that Northgate Shopping Centre was able to donate R7 000 to the Baby Lighthouse
Shelter (monies collected from entries) compared to the R5 000 collected last year.

Northgate is … Face of the North
In line with Northgate’s new strategy (Northgate is ... family) we decided to make the competition open to the whole family! The
baby competition accepted entries up to seven years and this year’s Face of the North competition targeted eight year olds up to 25
years. Young girls were called to compete for the prestigious title of: Junior/Pre-Teen/Teen Face of the North or Face of the North.
The competition on 9 September in Boardmans Court commenced with a fashion show showcasing Northgate tenants Old Khaki and
Mr Price. Stunning young girls apparel was modelled on the ramp by contestants. The fierce competition was judged by a panel of
experienced and celebrity judges: Andre Arendse, Sir Franco d’Arrigo, Adele Watridge, Matty Reid, Annie Malan, Nicci Hattingh and
Kobus Weyers. In between categories Boki, South African Idols 2011, performed to the audience.

Northgate is… family frights!
Halloween is a time where every adult gets to be a kid again and every kid gets to eat as many sweets as they like without mom
complaining. Although the streets are not as safe as they used to be for trick or treating, Northgate Shopping Centre will be giving all
shoppers a TREAT! Halloween characters will be distributing coupon booklets which will enable shoppers to get great discounts and
freebies from tenants, exposing them to stores that they may have not even been aware of. This will be supplemented with fun kids
activities such as pumpkin carving, lantern making and mask making etc. The kids activities will be held in Boardmans Court from 25
– 28 October.

Northgate is… family savings
‘Groupon’ is big for fantastic specials on products, services and getaways so lets make Northgate the
first shopping centre to launch a mall-centered ‘Groupon’ discount emailer called: Northgate is… family savings. Monthly emails
featuring unbelievable limited offer discounts at selected Northgate stores will be circulated entitling consumers to take advantage
of all that Northgate has to offer such as: Buy a Wimpy breakfast valued at R60 for only R30 within the next 24 hours. Email
addresses will be collected throughout the year including previous entrants. An initial emailer will be sent out offering people the
chance to opt out or continue receiving the emailers. A media campaign will be launched to encourage people to sign up.
Progress: the company, Buyaza, are in the process of contacting the Majors and Nationals for their buy-in. Once approved, they will
visit you to explain the emailer.
NOVEMBER
Northgate is … family spinning
Partnering with Virgin Active again, Northgate will raise funds by getting the family involved in some fun fitness. Good music and
great vibes from the Virgin Active team will encourage participation and passers by to donate some spare change for a good cause.
Prizes will be given away giving Northgate tenants to opportunity to create awareness for their brands and jump on board
Northgates extensive advertising. ALL proceeds will be donated to CHOC.
Northgate is… family fitness
The biggest cycling race in JHB is the 94.7 Momentum cycle challenge. Growing each year with 22 000 participants and further
hundreds of thousands of spectators, radio and TV coverage, it gives Northgate a perfect opportunity (as a shopping centre) en
route the event, to support and benefit hugely from it. Northgate supports CHOC in the 94.7 Cycle Challenge and in 2012 Northgate
would like to be an unofficial waterpoint for the cyclists participating. A Northgate branded gazebo will be set up and manned to
supply the thousands of cyclists with water sachets and supplements to help them finish the 100km race.
DECEMBER
Northgate year end function
Get ready to party – lumo style! Look out for your ‘Get your glow on’ year end function invitations. Good food, good entertainment
and good company is a great way to wind down from a stressful year. There will also be a presentation to tenants regarding the
extension plans for Northgate. Exciting stuff!
Northgate is… family giving
Décor: Marketing was able to use the budget to buy much needed new Christmas decor. Aside from purchasing new décor (to
replace unusable décor) budget was also used to purchase décor for the ‘empty’ parts of the mall. There are still numerous spots
that need décor.
Gift Wrapping: The Rotary Club will once again be setting up professional stands to provide gift wrapping services to shoppers.
Giving: The theme for this years Christmas is all about giving back and will be working on a strong charity campaign.

Photo opportunities with Santa: a competition will be held whereby photos with Santa must be uploaded to Facebook and Twitter.
The best photo will win R10 000 towards their Christmas gifts. The winning photo will be chosen according to the most likes and
comments it receives.
