PART I
1. Access the site census bureau, data tools, quickfacts, or type in URL
http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/
 Select the State of New York. In the pull down menu for City, choose either
Yonkers or Buffalo, then click Search and fill out chart below
 Under the People Quickfacts, find the female persons percentage of the
population; calculate how many people in this population are women. Men?

b. Is it a reasonable assumption to estimate that about half of your populations are men
and half are women? Explain why.
c. We will also estimate that about half of the population in each age group are men and
half are women. Is this a reasonable assumption? If not, for which age groups would this
assumption probably not be true? Explain why.

PART II
Task 2a: Choose two countries (one from List A and one from List B)
Make a handout about the population of each country in 2009. Each country must
have a pyramid, explanation of the pyramid, and compare/contrast section.
Access the site http://www.census.gov/ipc/www/idb/ .
 Click data access. There are three tabs to choose from, Country, Region, and
Age Group.
 Choose the Country tab.
 Find your countries from the pull down the menu and choose the year 2009.
You will be directed to three tabs. Click on Population pyramid tab.
 For each pyramid: Right click each pyramid and select Copy Image. Put the image
in a new Microsoft WORD file, by right clicking and choosing paste. Properly
label for each country with the year.
 Explain what factors might have affected the population and what cohorts seem to
be dominant/dwindling. Print out your handout.
 You may want to find out some other information about these countries to give
good explanations why these age-structure pyramids differ (such as the chart
under the demographic indicators tab). Also, CIA World Factbook website has
useful information.
PART III
Task 2b: Create a presentation about one country for two different years, preferably
at least 50 years apart. Be sure to explain the pyramid and provide some reasoning
why it has changed over the years. You should make population projections for the
future using the Pert formula.
 Follow the directions from above to find the population pyramid of the country of
interest.
 Hint! Press Control and click on both years your group is researching. This will
give you both pyramids on one page.

 Using what you know about demography and populations, provide some
explanation about the similarities/ differences of these pyramids.
 Create your pyramids. You may want to find out some other information about
these countries to give good explanations why these age-structure pyramids differ.

Every group will hand in one Age Structure Worksheet and present their findings in a
poster or powerpoint format.
Remember:
 Every person in your group should give feedback and offer comments since you will be
graded as a team
 Use what you already know about demographic transitions! Use vocabulary words, refer
to specific areas of your pyramid, and properly cite your outer sources.
