ECE 2704: SIGNALS AND SYSTEMS INSTRUCTOR: Professor Ting-Chung Poon Office: 641 Whittemore Hall Office Hours: 10:00-11:30 MWF or by appointment E-mail: tcpoon@vt.edu, Phone: 231-4876 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Analysis techniques for signals and systems. Signal representation, including Fourier and Laplace transforms. System definitions and properties. Use of convolution, transfer functions, and frequency response to determine system response. Applications to circuit analysis. Prerequisites: ECE 2004 (C- or above), Network Analysis and Math 2214, Intro. Differential Equations. REQUIRED MATERIALS: Textbook: Signals, Systems and Transforms, (2nd Edition), Phillips and Parr, Prentice-Hall, Inc., Upper Saddle River, NJ, 1999. Textbook: Electric Circuits, (6E), Nilsson and Riedel, Prentice-Hall (2001) Software: The Student Version of MATLAB, The Math Works, Inc., COURSE GRADE: Hour Exams (four ) Homework Final Examination Total points 400 100 150 650 Homework: Homework will be assigned in class. All homework is due at the beginning of class one week later on the following week. Late homework will not be accepted. Homework problems must be worked on standard 8 1/2 x 11 papers with all problems neatly worked and answers clearly designated. Pages should be stapled together in the upper left-hand corner and turned in without being folded. HOMEWORK NOT COMPLYING WILL BE RETURNED UNGRADED. Examination: No calculators will be allowed during exams. All grading are final. However, grading errors will be cheerfully corrected. If you have any questions about your progress and standing in the course, don't hesitate to ask your instructor during his office hours. Homework and exam solutions: Internet will be used to distribute homework and exam solutions. The web address for the class web page is http://www.ece.vt.edu/faculty/poon/ECE2704/ Honor system: You may work together on homework. However, each student must submit an individual and independent homework solution. The GTA will check for copying/cheating. Students are advised to visit the following Website for information regarding Honor System: http://filebox.vt.edu/studentinfo/ugradhonor/ THE HONOR CODE WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED IN THIS COURSE. HONESTY IN YOUR ACADEMIC WORK WILL DEVELOP INTO PROFESSIONAL INTEGRITY.
