School Our Lady of the Rosary College School Development Plan 2013/2014 - 2015/2016 1 Our Lady of the Rosary College Characteristics of education provided by schools of the Sisters Announcers of the Lord Our convictions An educator has to be filled with love and devotion as education is an art which touches hearts. Only people who know how to gain access to hearts will master the art. All human beings have thoughts rooted in religion; they believe in a Creator. Human hearts are inclined to truth, charity and the aesthetics which originate from the Creator. Education is to discover and develop Man’s potentiality for these virtues to the utmost. It is our firm belief that even the most deviant young people may repent and become charitable. Application of our convictions “Prevention is better than cure.” We follow the model of preventive education founded by the great educator Don Bosco. This model works from three principles: rationality, religion, and love. 1. Rationality – We convince students by appealing to reasons. Our rules and measures must be reasonable and easily understood by students. We regularly use encouragement and reminders to persuade students to be charitable and diligent in their studies. 2. Religion – We develop students in the spirit of religion. We educate youths to search for truth, charity and the aesthetics through the values of the Christian Gospel. 3. Love – We strike students’ hearts with sincere love for them. Love forms the nucleus of our education ideal. We do not just use words but action to prove our love. 2 Vision of the school The motto of the School is “Purity and Charity”. Following the teaching of Jesus Christ, with our teachers’ professionalism and our staff’s sense of devotion, we pledge to develop our students’ potential to the fullest and enable them to achieve success in university, career and life and have a positive influence on others. School Mission We follow the teachings of Jesus Christ and regard Our Lady as our model. Our mission is to help our students acquire the Christian values with special emphasis on "Purity and Charity". Through the provision of a caring and loving environment and building up of a trustful and intimate relationship with parents and students, we aim to enable students to become mature, happy and positive people. By equipping students with knowledge and skills, we hope to help them develop their individual potential fully. We also aim to enhance students' social and cultural awareness as well as their care for their country from a global perspective. 3 SWOT Analysis Our Strengths Our understanding of our students and our vision We have a strong understanding of the needs and qualities of our students and our clearly-stated school mission statement captures what we want them to achieve. Our mission statement is understood by our students, parents and teachers. We have successfully achieved our school vision of creating a loving and caring environment for our students and establishing a close bond with the parents. Our academic programme Our students are keen learners and have a high academic performance. The school caters for the needs of, and is active in providing, opportunities for students of varying abilities. Our teachers are committed to the school’s mission. They are knowledgeable, conscientious, dedicated and caring professionals, who work hard, inside and outside the classroom, in the interests of the students. Our teachers are friendly, approachable and have a good rapport with students, fostering an open and harmonious learning atmosphere. We have clear curriculum goals which focus on students’ needs, our mission, and an all-round education. We have a strong English Language programme to support English-medium-ofinstruction learning, as well as a highly active English enrichment co-curricular programme supported by two NETs. To develop students as more active and independent learners, we have a diversified curriculum including project learning, drama-in-education, and thinking and study skills. We constantly evaluate our teachers and the curriculum programme to keep abreast of educational trends and curriculum reform, to improve teaching and learning in the future as well. 4 Our pastoral care Developing a positive self-image and attitude towards life, our students are cheerful, well-mannered, well-disciplined and well-behaved. They participate actively in a wide range of in-school and external life-wide learning activities and community service. The all-girls environment is conducive to building close peer relationships which naturally turn into lifelong friendships. Our students are nurtured to be calm and confident youngsters through our Spiritual Education programme. The school has a well-established Guidance Team. This network of teachers, a social worker and peer guidance ‘big sisters’, provide pastoral support to students experiencing social or emotional difficulties. Our school, parents, alumni and sponsors We are located in the pleasant, quiet area of Yau Yat Chuen, conducive to learning. We have established an excellent reputation in Sham Shui Po district for the quality of our educational and pastoral programme. We have strong support from the parents, our alumni, our sponsors and sister schools in Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Our parents and alumni are actively involved in supporting our students, and our sponsors offer our students scholarships. We have taken the initiative in implementing self-evaluation at school, department and teacher level, and the school actively reports to all stakeholders results of its self-evaluation. We are optimistic about the future. We have a clear direction of development and the school has strategically formulated its development plan in line with its direction of development. Our Weaknesses Curriculum reform represents a challenge to staff and students. With limited resources and large-scale curriculum reform, both teachers and students are still exploring effective learning and teaching strategies in our changing educational landscape. 5 With high expectations on students and teachers, both are burdened with a heavy workload. Our Opportunities We are establishing an Incorporated Management Committee which opens up school management to different stakeholders like parents, teachers and alumni. It is the cornerstone of quality education and boosts the confidence of parents and the public in the school. Its establishment will lay a solid foundation for the long-term development of the school. The New Senior Secondary curriculum, with a flexible combination of electives and the incorporation of Other Learning Experiences, can provide an opportunity for students to have all-round development. With more new teachers joining us and with on-going staff training, new ideas and teaching methods may be introduced to respond to educational reform, and to further enhance student learning. Curriculum fine-tuning will provide some relief of workload to staff and students. Our Threats With the rise of individualism and materialism, our students tend to downgrade or even sacrifice noble goals and values, particularly personal relationships. This makes the work of educating youngsters harder for our teachers. With the complicated family structures of contemporary society, family problems threaten the well-being and academic performance of our students. 6 Major Concerns for a period of 3 school years 1.
