Please come to the computer lab on the 2nd floor in room 225 during your assigned lunch. We will be available from 10:04-11:54. Snacks will be provided. 10/6 Hispanic Heritage fact for today: In 1986 Astronaut Franklin Chang-Diaz flew on a total of seven space-shuttle missions. The first female Hispanic astronaut was Ellen Ochoa, whose first of four shuttle missions was in 1991. 10/5, 6 The bilingual club will be having its first meeting today (10/6) in room 548 at 2:30. If you are interested in multicultural activities, please plan on attending. 10/6, 8, 9 The Grad Bash 2016 committee will be hosting a raffle at our last home football game next Friday. The raffle will be for the first 25 seniors to pay the $50 grad bash fee. The winner will be selected and announced at half time and the prizes will be on display at the game. ATHLETICS 10/6 Tonight the KC Cross Country team runs our closest race to Central. We will be at KVCC’s Oshtemo campus, 6767 West O Ave, which is just down the road! Come cheer on the girls at 5pm and the boys at 5:40pm. The kids and coaches would love to see you there. Hispanic Heritage Month Facts, 1 per day, September 15 – October 15: Hispanics usually place great value on appearance as a sense of honor, dignity and pride. Famous singers with Hispanic heritage include Linda Ronstadt, Jennifer Lopez, Sammy Davis Jr., Christina Aguilera, Gloria Estefan, Trini Lopez, Ricky Martin, Carlos Santana, Selena and Rita Moreno Famous writers and journalists with Hispanic heritage include Isabela Allende, Julia Alvarez, Rudolfo Anaya, Sandra Cisneros, Oscar Hijuelos, Maria Hinojosa, Geraldo Rivera, Louis Santeiro and Gary Soto. Pulitzer Prize winners of Hispanic origin: Oscar Hijuelos in 1990 for his novel The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love. For Drama, Nilo Cruz in 2003 for his play Anna in the Tropics. There is diversity among Latino origin groups in major metro areas. Mexicans make up 78% of Latinos in the Los Angeles area but, in the New York City area, Puerto Ricans (28%) and Dominicans (21%) are the largest groups. Meanwhile, Salvadorans (32%) are most numerous in the Washington, D.C., metro area, and Cubans (54%) are the largest group in Miami. A record 25.2 million Hispanics are eligible to vote in 2014, up from 21.3 million in 2010. But during the last midterm election the voter turnout rate of Hispanics (31%) lagged behind whites (49%) and blacks (44%). More than 35 million Latinos speak Spanish at home. About 38% say Spanish is their dominant language, compared with 25% who are English-dominant and 36% who are bilingual, according to the Pew Research Center’s 2013 National Survey of Latinos.
