ALA AL-DIN AND HIS WONDERFUL LAMP SCENE 1 – THE OLD BAZAAR IN CAIRO SET –Curtain backing NARRATOR – (Voice off) There was once a wonderful lamp – whoever possessed it could gain their heart’s desire. The lamp had passed through many hands, and now lay almost forgotten, buried beneath the sands of time. But there was one, a great Sorcerer, a studier of spells and evil enchantments, who wanted that lamp and ultimate power. MUSIC – ‘Sand Dance’ SET – Open curtains to Desert backdrop SORCERER (voice off – shouting angrily) Catch her Incubus – she’s heard that music, she’s off again! ENTER – curtain, dancing camel chased by Incubus – followed a little later by the Sorcerer. The camel is finally caught and subdued, the music continues quietly in the background. SORCERER (crossly to Incubus) Never will I let you hire transport again, look at the beast (Camela the camel is swaying in time to the music) – Camela the cavorting camel! How am I expected to pursue my ambitions when I have to put up with this (indicates camel)? Any more trouble (raises his stick) and I’ll beat her until she dances to my tune (camel cowers and sidles up to Incubus who comforts her). Just as we are beginning to make progress – this morning I heard tell of a document, in the possession of a seller of books in Cairo, which will lead us to the lamp. Come – we are away to the old Bazaar in Cairo. MUSIC – ‘Arabian Nights’ DANCE –Sorcerer EXIT curtain – Incubus and camel EXIT curtain –Sorcerer at the end of the dance SET – Close curtains MUSIC – ‘The Old Bazaar in Cairo’ ENTER – Carpet seller – side entrance and Harem girls – centre curtain. (EXIT centre curtain before song finishes) Dance Club – curtain/first aid side Carpet Sellers – zamboni end Snake charmers – curtain/both sides Traders and bookseller – curtain/both sides 2 carpet sellers with big carpet – curtain/first aid side Just before the song finishes Sorcerer and Incubus enter - zamboni end. When reaching edge of carpet Sorcerer holds up his hand - sound/visual effect and music stops. Everyone is quiet and still (freeze frame) as if hypnotized. 1 Sorcerer approaches the seller of old books and Incubus goes off to steal some sweetmeats. SORCERER – (clicks fingers and wakes the bookseller up) You have a document I wish to purchase. See here (gives the seller a piece of parchment to read), this is what I need. BOOKSELLER – (looks startled as he reads the parchment and gazes fearfully at the Black Sorcerer) I have what you desire (he extracts a small scroll from a bag around his neck). I am glad to be rid of it – but it will cost you very many dinars Saab. SORCERER – (clicks his fingers to put the bookseller back into a trance and snatches the scroll) It will cost me naught but a click of my fingers you impudent cur! Come Incubus. Sorcerer and Incubus go to EXIT, zamboni end, they stop at the edge of the carpet and the Sorcerer raises his hand once again (sound/visual effect). The music begins from where it finished – which is last phrase of ‘The Old Bazaar in Cairo’ and everyone carries on as if they had never stopped. MUSIC - goes into ‘Marketplace’ - a short piece for street entertainers (acrobat, snake girl dancer and sword swallower). MUSIC – goes into ‘Walk like an Egyptian’ ENTER – Arabs – side entrance ENTER – Street children – zamboni end/both sides EXIT - centre curtain and zamboni end 2 SCENE 2 – THE TOMB OF THE GODDESS ISIS SET – Open curtains to Desert backdrop ENTER zamboni end - Sorcerer, Incubus and Camela SORCERER (to Incubus) From this document it appears that … (Camela looks over the Sorcerer’s shoulder, Sorcerer pushes him away angrily) - get this creature off me, it dribbles! (Incubus pulls Camela away, Camela looks upset). …. only the goddess Isis has knowledge of the lamp. There are (waves the document) certain instructions and incantations which will enable me to summon her back to the living world. Stand back - I have magic to do, (Incubus takes hold of Camela who begins to tremble dramatically) - and control that revolting, four legged dung heap do! SORCERER (Chants spells and makes mystic signs in the air) Sound effect and flash: MUSIC – ‘Bolero’ ENTER - curtain - the goddess Isis and attendants DANCE – the goddess Isis and attendants ISIS You summoned me sorcerer with your black, evil arts – I am thus obliged to disclose the whereabouts of the wonderful lamp. I cast it into the underworld many centuries ago for discord and disharmony was caused by those who sought to possess it. (She takes off a ring) Take this Ring of Destiny, gaze into the jewel and a map will reveal its whereabouts. The ring must be worn by the one who claims the lamp. SORCERER (taking the ring) A task I will relish madam. ISIS (holding up a warning hand) Oh no! The lamp must be retrieved by one who would use it wisely. When the time is right, one Ala al-Din, son of Mustapha may enter the place where the wonderful lamp is entombed. It is he you must seek and outwit, if you can, dark sorcerer. I must return to my ancestors, you must travel the silk roads to China. MUSIC – ‘Bolero’ EXIT - curtain – Isis and attendants SORCERER (gazing into the ring – excited) Incubus! I see the map – come, the lamp will be mine! (C gets in front of him at this point and he pushes her angrily out of the way causing a flurry of clumsy camel legs). EXIT - zamboni end –Sorcerer, Incubus and Camela SET – Close curtain – change to Kitchen backdrop and props 3 SCENE 3 – THE HOUSE OF ALA AL-DIN SET – Open curtain to Kitchen backdrop and props – cupboard, shelf, table with a pile of bowls on, chairs, cooking range with a large pot and ladle, four rubber plants at the back. ENTER curtain end – Mother, very agitated MOTHER Ala al-Din! Where is the boy? Why do you treat your poor mother so? Such troubles you bring upon the head of a poor widow woman. ENTER curtain end – Aladin holding two full sacks ALADIN Well, that took longer than expected, (gives sacks to mother) here’s vegetables for tomorrow’s soup and fruit for today. (Wanders to the cooking pot and lifts the lid). Is the stew ready yet? The children will be here soon. MOTHER (exasperated) Each day it takes longer for each day we need more, the queue of hungry children grows faster than the Emperor’s belly! Stop this folly my son, if the palace guard catch you stealing from the Emperor’s garden I will no longer be a mother. ALADIN (indignantly) If you saw those gardens mother you would not ask me to stop. While people starve, the Emperor and his court live in luxury and the Royal Advisor is to blame, he fools the Emperor into thinking all is well with the people but finds ways with tricks and taxes to take their land and living. MOTHER (angrily) So you must risk your life to steal fruit and vegetables, for what – to keep alive hope when there is none, to feed those who will starve when you are gone? ALADIN (reassuringly) Oh mother, don’t despair. (Proudly) I have plans. I intend to marry Princess Yasmina (Mother gasps, hand to mouth) and get this province ruled properly. MOTHER (faintly) You have seen her unveiled? Tell me this is not true, tell me you stopped in the market place and breathed in the smoke from the hookah of old Abdul – they’re pipe dreams my boy. ALADIN (placatingly) Don’t worry, we worked it out while she helped me dig up the vegetables. By law, she must be promised to someone by the Night of the Dancing Dragons, if not she has to marry the Royal Advisor. Well, she is frightening away all her suitors and I’m going to get a dowry. 4 MOTHER (sarcastically) So you’ll need the family jewels then. (Pointing) They’re in the cupboard – two cracked rice bowls, your father’s old sewing machine and the broken fan my mother gave me. MUSIC very faint – ‘The Dance of the Siamese Children’ ALADIN (finger to lips) Hush! The children are coming. They have faith in me, so must you mother. ENTER curtain/first aid side – Orphan Children (Junior Club) DANCE – for children The children then line up to be fed and are given a ladle of the stew in a bowl. EXIT curtain/first aid side – children as they get their stew As this is going on ENTER zamboni end, unnoticed by Aladin and Mother, the Sorcerer and Incubus. SORCERER (scathingly) So, this is Ala al-Din who must be tricked into getting the lamp. A street rat, he’ll not stand in my way. I’ll use him and (clicks his fingers) dispense with him. The children should have all exited and if there is any time Aladin and Mother start clearing up. SORCERER (to Incubus) Time for a little charm I think Incubus (approaches Aladin and Mother). SORCERER (salaams) Greetings to you, I received word that my beloved brother Mustapha passed to the land of his ancestors. I have traveled far to offer my sympathies and help to you. (To Aladin) You, I believe, are my nephew Ala al-Din, (indicates Mother) please introduce me to your beautiful sister. MOTHER (looks at Aladin and shrugs in mystification) If you are the brother of my Mustapha you are welcome. But the dazzling suns of the desert must have shriveled your eyeballs to rabbit droppings if you do not see that I am his widow. SORCERER (feigns astonishment) My sister in law?! I regret the years of study and travel that have kept me from this pleasure (kisses her hand). ALADIN (to Mother) Ma – what is he on about? MOTHER (aside to Aladin) It’s called flattery Aladin, means he wants something from us – we must be on our guard. 5 SORCERER Madam, I am here to help the family of my poor (stifles a sob), dear, departed brother. MOTHER And in return …… ? SORCERER (eagerly) Just a small fav ….. (he sees her expression and tails off), from my heart’s goodness I offer; I am a rich and powerful man. Your son has a trade? His father was a tailor – does the boy sew. MOTHER (dryly) Only wild oats - One could say he gives and he takes – some win, some lose – we manage. ALADIN (cheerfully) You could say I’m in the re-distribution of wealth business. SORCERER You could become a merchant. Tomorrow I will introduce you around, for the sake of my dear dead brother and (bows to Mother and kisses her hand) your exquisite mother. Think on it. Black Sorcerer wanders off to inspect the kitchen and see if there is any stew left. ALADIN (exasperated) Why hesitate mother? – think dowries! MOTHER My brain thinks dowries son - but my heart speaks of evil and treachery. I trust him not, I know of no brother. I must learn more. (Calls to the Black Sorcerer) You caught us unprepared er – brother, we fail in our duty. You need refreshment. SORCERER (producing a menu from about his person) I would not impose. (To Aladin, giving him the menu) Take this boy, it’s from ‘The Flaming Dragon’. I will have 8, 19, 34 and 72 , my credit is good. Choose what you will, your mother also. ALADIN (delighted) The best take-away in town mother! Thanks Uncle. Mother and Aladin eagerly scrutinize the menu. SORCERER (aside to Incubus) That will rid us of the boy for a while. The mother will need more exposure to my powers of persuasion. Check on that camel, she’s been parked for too long – I don’t trust her, a kind word and she’s anybodies. EXIT curtain end – Aladin followed by Incubus 6 The Sorcerer approaches Mother. SORCERER I sense, my dear, you are a woman of integrity and you doubt my intentions? They say eyes are the windows of the soul – look into my eyes sister (gazes at her) and see a pure heart. Trust in me (takes her hand) – just relax and trust in me. MUSIC – ‘Trust in me’ DANCE – Mother and Black Sorcerer – he is hypnotizing her EXIT – curtain end, Mother led by Black Sorcerer SET – close curtain, move kitchen props, change to Desert backdrop. Make sure treasure chests and Foo dogs are to hand for later in the next scene 7 SCENE 4 – THE CAVE OF WONDERS SET – Open curtains two thirds of the way to reveal partial Desert backdrop ENTER zamboni end –Sorcerer, Incubus, Camela and Aladin – the Sorcerer is talking as they enter. SORCERER You did well today nephew, you impressed those to whom I introduced you. Camela nods at Incubus and Aladin and Incubus goes up to shake Aladin’s hand. While they are thus distracted the Black Sorcerer speaks an aside. SORCERER Not such a fool as I thought. I must ensure that I get the lamp but he perishes in the caverns. (To Aladin) Now my boy, all you need is a little capital (rubs his fingers together to indicate money) to set you up in business. ALADIN I am indebted to you Uncle. SORCERER (brushing off thanks) It is a family thing, think nothing of it. I travel light, it is safer that way - here in China, I have a personal, underground vault – never trust the banks boy. That is why we are here. You must enter alone I fear (false laugh), the entrance gets a little narrower on each visit – or perhaps I grow wider eh?! You must be brave, there is a cave of bats – only poisonous if they nip you – and a cave of hungry ghosts – poor souls who were never claimed by their ancestors. (Aladin looks alarmed) Not pleasant , but don’t worry – take this ring (takes off the Ring of Destiny and gives it to Aladin) – it will keep you safe, I promise. The third cave is the one - treasures untold (gives Aladin a bag). You may fill this bag – no more mind! ALADIN (putting on the ring) Thank you Sir. SORCERER Just so – ah, one more thing, a little favour. Last time I was here, I left behind a small lamp. An insignificant piece of domesticity, but of sentimental value, I would be grateful if you could retrieve it. ALADIN Of course Uncle, (looking around) the entrance to this place? The Sorcerer shows him – it is at the curtain end As they all EXIT round the curtain the Sorcerer is speaking as he leads the way, Camela is trembling and needs a push from behind from Incubus who exits last. SORCERER (as they EXIT) Along here between these rocks 8 SET – Curtains close as they EXIT – change backdrop for Grotto which is needed shortly ENTER – Bats - centre curtain, zamboni end both sides and side entrance MUSIC – ‘Summer’ DANCE – for Bats ENTER – side entrance Aladin - half way through and the bats swoop on him, he beats them off. EXIT - zamboni end – Bats ALADIN (exhausted and examining his anatomy) I don’t think I’ve been bitten – that ring must have worked. UV MUSIC – ‘Thriller’ ENTER – Ghosts centre curtain and ghosts on sticks from side entrance DANCE – Ghosts / Aladin EXIT - centre curtain – Ghosts SET – Jewel boxes and Foo dogs pushed into place ALADIN That was scary! (Skating towards zamboni end) Now, is there really treasure down here? I’m not sure I trust my so called ‘Uncle’. SET – Open curtains to reveal Grotto backdrop, jewel chests and Foo dogs MUSIC – ‘Diamonds and pearls’ ENTER – Jewel girls zamboni end carrying bowls of jewels DANCE – Jewel girls At the end of the dance they put down their bowls near jewel chests and EXIT curtain end ALADIN (looking at the jewels) What are these (touches the jewels) – they are very pretty, but they don’t look valuable. I’ll take some, mother can decorate the house at New Year (he fills his bag). ALADIN That’s it then, a few baubles – Must be a trick to get his lamp back! (Looks around and sees it on the floor). There it is (picks it up and inspects it) what a fuss over an old lamp. SORCERER (Loud, angry, echoey voice off ice) What are you doing down there you numbskull?! Have you got it – the lamp – bring it here quickly! ALADIN He’s got his turban in a twist. I risked my life for this (holds up the lamp). I’ll make him wait for it. SORCERER (furious, off ice) The lamp boy! 9 ALADIN Did you say ‘lamp’ Uncle? SORCERER Of course I said ‘lamp’, stupid son of a knicker stitcher. Look on the floor somewhere. ALADIN (holding up the lamp) No lamp on the floor Uncle. SORCERER (exasperated) On a shelf or rock then ALADIN No shelves or rocks Uncle. SORCERER (ominously) So you cannot see a lamp? ALADIN (holding the lamp behind his back and turning round) No Uncle. SORCERER (loud and beside himself with rage) Curses on all who fooled me! I will seal this cavern for ever. A fine tomb for the tailor’s son Ala al-Din! Flash, crash and rumble, Aladin staggers around during this - then silence. ALADIN Looks like a landslide victory to an old sorcerer – Uncle indeed! (Looks around). Must be a way out, I’ll sleep on it (settles down and shivers). It’s so cold – I’ll think of Yasmina, that’ll keep me warm. Lights dim - Aladin sleeps. MUSIC – ‘Eternal Flame’ ENTER curtain end – Yasmina - spotlights DANCE – Yasmina Exit curtain end – Yasmina Lights go up, Aladin stretches and wakes as the music is dying away ALADIN (standing up shivering) Still cold, (surprised) but I slept warmly enough – (slowly) yes, I dreamt Yasmina was telling me she loved me – there were flickering flames, (rubs his hands together to warm them) like a warm fire – I wish I had one now! Sound/lighting effect ENTER curtain end – Slave of the Ring 10 SLAVE (bowing) Is that all you wish for Master? ALADIN (astonished) Where did you come from? SLAVE The ring my lord - (Points to it) the Ring of Destiny, just rub the ring and I can be of service to you. Sometimes a conscience – but always a friend MUSIC – ‘You’ve got a friend’ DANCE – for the Slave ALADIN So you could get me out of here? SLAVE Maybe, tell me why. ALADIN (mystified) Because I’m cold and I’m hungry and I want … (interrupted by Slave) SLAVE (holding up her hand to stop him) I – I – I, you’re talking to a Slave not a Genie. Genies do ‘I want magic’ or even ‘please may I have’ magic if they’re lucky. We Slaves have a social conscience – I can grant any wish that you make for someone else – think about it. ALADIN (thinking) That makes sense – let me see ….. If I’m to die here (counts on his fingers) – please make sure mother is cared for, arrange for the street children to be fed – good fresh food mind, no school dinner rubbish, and (sadly) make Yasmina forget all about me and find an honest suitor. Can you do that? SLAVE Well spoken Ala al-Din. I think you are the best person to care for your mother, feed the street children and rule the land with the Princess. Because you are needed, your wish to escape is granted, as a bonus, I will donate the children’s next meal. Follow me (turns to go and sees the lamp on the floor – points to it) and take that old lamp with you – it might be useful. EXIT curtain end – Slave and Aladin SET – close curtain, remove treasure chests, Foo dogs and jewel baskets. Change to Kitchen backdrop and put on kitchen props. 11 SCENE 5 – BACK HOME SET – Open curtain to Kitchen backdrop and props - cupboard, table with a tin of cookies on it, chairs, cooking range, shelf, plants ENTER curtain end – Mother surrounded by grizzling, girl Street Children STREET CHILD 1 (plaintively - tugging at Mother) The boys look for Aladin – where is he? – We are hungry. MOTHER (exasperated and worried - holding her hands over her ears) Girls! Girls! I hear you. You make my head pound like the palace gong! (Loudly) Be quiet (girls stop and go to sit at zamboni end/Street Children 1 and 2 by table) – boys shout and rage but girls drip, drip, – like water on a stone they wear you down! Oh Aladin, come and rescue me from these whining, pestering, manipulating little girls. MUSIC – ‘Little Girls’ DANCE – Mother STREET CHILD 1 But where is Aladin? MOTHER Do you think that I his mother do not worry for his safety. STREET CHILDREN - wail MOTHER (pulls herself together and speaks sharply) Stop grizzling (picks up a tin from the table and holds it out to Street Child 1 and 2) - here, have a fortune cookie. Street children 1 and 2 bite them and take out the messages STREET CHILD 1 (reading – puzzled) It says ‘go get yourself a job’…. MOTHER (snatching it off her with a sound of annoyance) That was meant for Aladin. STREET CHILD 2 Mine says ‘mind your own business’ …. MOTHER (snatches it and throws it over her shoulder) I was saving that for the Widow No See next door. STREET CHILD 1 (stamping her foot) We don’t want fortune cookies! We want proper food from Aladin! STREET CHILDREN - wail 12 ENTER - side entrance – Aladin with his bag of baubles and the lamp, followed by servants with large, silver dishes of food. The servants remain standing at the back. MOTHER (going to him) Aladin you are safe, (indicates servants) but who ….? ALADIN (embraces mother) Later mother - I have gifts. (Gives her the lamp) One, only slightly tarnished, good quality lamp – even a little oil left. MOTHER (inspecting it) A fine lamp son – I’ll polish it later. (Puts it on the shelf) ALADIN (giving her the bag) … and sparkly decorations for New Year. MOTHER (taking out a bauble and gasping) (Looks into the bag) You have a King’s ransom in the finest jewels here! ALADIN (astonished and pleased) A King’s ransom! (takes the bauble and inspects it) – Or a Princess’s dowry, eh mother? MOTHER Yes indeed – these could be presented to any Emperor. ALADIN Then you must take them to court tomorrow – it is not seemly that I petition for myself. MOTHER (shocked) Me! To the palace – (fans herself) oh the flushes are back - we’ll talk later. Do something about these dreadful children before they start their whining again – (indicates bag) I’ll keep these safe. Mother puts the jewels in the cupboard, Aladin turns to the children. ALADIN (to Street child 1) Call the boys – Say I have brought a feast fit for an Emperor. (Points to the servants standing at the back with dishes) For you – food – glorious food! ENTER – more Street Children, curtain end/both sides MUSIC – ‘Food, glorious food’ DANCE – All Street Children/Aladdin/Mother and servants EXIT curtain end and zamboni end to the music at the end of the dance – All. SET – Close curtains INTERVAL 13 SCENE 6 – THE LANDS OF THE SORCERER SET – Curtains MUSIC – faintly in the background ‘Arabian Nights’ NARRATOR (voice over music) In China, all is well. But, what of the Sorcerer? Still obsessed with thoughts of the lamp he is determined to continue his quest. SET – Open curtains to Desert backdrop ENTER curtain end –Sorcerer, Incubus and Camela. The Sorcerer is holding a prism and Incubus and Camela are dancing together. SORCERER (to Incubus) You are becoming much too attached to that camel Incubus – she’s besotted with you. I should have had her put down, she’s a liability. (Camela stands trembling while Incubus comforts her. The Sorcerer looks her up and down). Still, if we run short of food in the desert we can always eat her – quite tasty camel meat. (Camela trembles all the more). Oh, take her away, I have magic to do. EXIT curtain end – Incubus and Camela SORCERER (holding up the prism and gazing into it) Isis must have been right about the lamp, I acted too hastily. I will harness the power of the prism which speaks through the spectrum. (Chants magic words). Lights dim, bright colours dance about, tinkling sound effect ENTER curtain end – Prismatica who bows to the Sorcerer and stands waiting. SORCERER Prismatica – Spirit of the Prism, take me through the spectrum and answer my questions truly. Show me the fate of Ala al-Din. Show me red for death or green for life. MUSIC – ‘Over the rainbow’ DANCE – Prismatica and the Sorcerer dance as lights change from red to green and back several times, as the music stops they go green SORCERER (looking at his green self in anguish) He lives! The son of a camel turd has survived! (Quietly to himself) But how did he escape? It must have been the Ring of Destiny. Did he find the lamp I wonder? (To Prismatica) Tell me Prism Spirit, did that gutter slime discover the lamp? Show yellow for ‘no’ – blue for ‘yes’. (Shakes a fist) Let it be yellow – let it be yellow! MUSIC – ‘Somewhere over the rainbow’ DANCE in yellow and blue lights – Prismatica and Sorcerer. As she finishes the light is blue, Prismatica curtsies to the Black Sorcerer and EXITS curtain end. 14 SORCERER (howls) Ah! Ala al-Din is free and has the lamp. (Thoughtfully) But he is a half wit and his mother susceptible to my hypnotic charm (strokes his beard). With cunning the lamp can still be mine. (Shouts) Incubus, come, bring that wanton beast with you – we journey once more to China. ENTER curtain end – Incubus and Camela EXIT zamboni end, striding off quickly – Sorcerer MUSIC – ‘Slow boat to China’ DANCE – Camela and Incubus EXIT - dancing zamboni end SET – Close curtains – change to Palace backdrop, put on throne (with Emperor’s robe on it), dias and foo dogs 15 SCENE 7 – THE EMPEROR’S PALACE SET – Palace backdrop. Throne, dias and Foo dogs. ENTER curtain end – Princess Yasmina and her Ladies YASMINA (as she enters) Practice the Bridal Dance – remember I’m to be betrothed on the Night of the Dancing Dragons’, the wedding will follow at New Year. LEILA But how can this be Princess? You have frightened away all the suitors who have petitioned your father. I heard that when they asked you how well versed you were in the marital arts, you showed them how well versed you were in the martial arts. YASMINA (grinning and doing a Kung Fu kick) Too right Leila – and it worked wonders, they fled from the palace clutching their dowries. Ladies giggle behind their fans LEILA Then you must marry your father’s advisor, Soh Mein! YASMINA Never! (Aside to Leila) I am to marry, it is true. I have heard from Aladin (Leila gasps). He is to be a rich merchant – and has a dowry, his mother will present it at court today! Leila I was so worried about him – I dreamt he was in a cold, lonely place. I comforted him and the next morning I knew all would be well. (Turns to her Ladies) But we waste time, hurry Ladies do – before the petitioners arrive. Lead them Leila. MUSIC – ‘The Tao of Love’ DANCE – for Ladies while Yasmina watches YASMINA (clapping) Well done! Ah, my parents and Soh Mein return from the tea dance. ENTER – zamboni end, Emperor, Empress and Advisor EMPEROR (taking his wife’s hand) Oh, how I love to dance, come, one more – the peasants can wait MUSIC – ‘Can’t be bothered now’ DANCE – Emperor, Empress, Advisor – backed by Yasmina and Ladies Sound of palace gong. EXIT hurriedly Yasmina, Ladies and Empress. ADVISOR (calls) All those seeking an audience with the grand Emperor may enter the Throne Room. 16 MUSIC – ‘Fanfare for the Common Man’ ENTER zamboni end – Peasants and Mother ADVISOR (calling authoritatively) First supplicant approach the Emperor MUSIC in background First supplicant approaches, bows and ‘speaks’ – this is mime, he is obviously very agitated and asking for something. The Emperor is deferring to the Advisor who is shaking his head and indicating that the petitioner leaves. The petitioner EXITS side entrance, head bowed. The Advisor confers with the Emperor. ADVISOR The grand Emperor has decreed that all petitioners seeking work, food, reduction of taxes or the return of land should leave the Throne Room, he is unable to help at this time. They may return if a suitable dowry is received for the hand of Princess Yasmina. MUSIC – ‘At the end of the day’ DANCE – all petitioners except Mother EXIT – Petitioners, zamboni end, both sides. Mother remains EMPEROR (pointing at Mother who is kneeling, head bowed) Who is that woman Soh Mein? What has she under that cloth? Perhaps she cooks (licks his lips), perhaps it’s a little gift eh! ADVISOR (calling disdainfully to Mother) Your grand Emperor, has bestowed upon you the gift of an audience. Approach and pay homage. Mother approaches reverently and pays homage, bowing over her tray. EMPEROR (impatiently) Rise woman, rise – you’re squashing the goodies. What do you offer? MOTHER (timidly) A dowry, my Lord - from my son, Ala al-Din Emperor and Advisor look at one another in astonishment and begin to laugh. EMPEROR (holding his sides and wiping his eyes) Oh uncover it woman do. Is it a stewed rabbit or a new line in noodles? MOTHER (pulls off the cloth) Sorry to disappoint my Lord – it is merely a few bright baubles. Mother backs off. Emperor rises in astonishment and comes down from his throne as the Advisor picks up the tray of baubles and takes them to him. They examine the jewels. 17 EMPEROR (to Advisor) I know a jewel of quality when I see one Soh Mein – these are the finest I have ever seen – and so many of them! ADVISOR (worriedly to Emperor, looking at Mother furtively) Hush my Lord! Let us not be hasty. I have heard of Ala al-Din – he is a street rat! These must be stolen. Punish the woman for her impudence - and the son for his crime! You need no dowry, I will wed the Princess and bring wealth to the province. EMPEROR Not so hasty Soh Mein, how can I refuse such a gift? A few of these jewels alone would pay off all my debts. ADVISOR They won’t last for ever – how can you keep them and refuse him the hand of the Princess? EMPEROR You’re the Advisor, Soh Mein – advise! ADVISOR (thinking) Hmm – you could say you will accept them as a ‘statement of intent’, that the Princess is herself a jewel and worth much more than these trinkets. You could ask for something impossible to supply (takes out parchment and charcoal and prepares to write) – write a wish list. EMPEROR Oo, what fun! I’m partial to pearls … ADVISOR (pausing before her writes) Pearl’s what? EMPEROR (uncomprehendingly) Pearls the size of chickens eggs! – From Southern seas. The men get carried away ADVISOR - some of the more expensive spices from India – and their best blended incense? EMPEROR (giggling) Perfect – how about gold ornaments from Eygpt, exquisite African furs and the best Phoenician glass – write it all down! ADVISOR (nudging the Emperor) How about a slave girl or two….? EMPEROR (shocked) Soh Mein! You are to marry my daughter. 18 ADVISOR (placatingly) Just a joke my lord EMPEROR (regretfully) Pity it will come to naught. I’ll speak to the woman. The Emperor goes to speak to Mother, this is mimed in the background – his telling her and giving her the list – her horror as she hears of the demands. ADVISOR (in foreground) How close my plans came to disaster. I’ll investigate from where Ala al-Din stole these jewels, rid myself of him and maybe lay my hands on more. MUSIC – very faintly for the exits ‘Money, Money, Money’ EXIT zamboni end - Mother shaking her head. EMPEROR (calls to Advisor) Come Soh Mein – bring the jewels. The Grand Treasurer can value them. EXIT curtain end, to music – Emperor and Advisor SET – close curtains. Change to Kitchen backdrop and props. 19 SCENE 8 – NEW LAMPS FOR OLD (OR TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE) MUSIC – ‘Money, Money, Money’ can continue through set change SET – Open curtains to Kitchen backdrop and furniture. ENTER , side entrance – Sorcerer. He is wearing a cloak with a hood to disguise him as a pedlar and carries an oil lamp, he has a full sack on his back. SORCERER (shouts) New lamps for old! (looks around but there is no response) Oh the humiliation, first Incubus elopes with that camel, then I have to pose as a pedlar – and a stupid one. New lamps for old – what rubbish. I’ll try ‘two for the price of one’, that has a more entrepreneurial ring. ENTER zamboni end – MOTHER. She is looking distracted and heading for home. SORCERER (aside) At last (approaching Mother – disguising voice) Beautiful lamps Madam - two for the price of one, find me one of your oldest and I’ll take it in exchange for two superbly reconditioned models. MOTHER (hurries past warding him off and shaking her head) Not now – I have more on my mind than oil lamps. (Stops) Two for the price of one you say? (Sorcerer nods) Come back later and we may do business. EXIT side entrance - Sorcerer looking pleased. MOTHER (going into house and calling out) Aladin are you home? My poor boy, our hopes crumble like the bones of our ancestors. ENTER curtain end – Aladin carrying the silver dishes which came with the children’s food ALADIN (distracted, mind on dishes) I’ve just been polishing these, they’re real silver. We could sell them and buy more food for the children. (Remembering where Mother has been) But mother, the Emperor – did he accept my dowry? MOTHER (Looking despondent and shaking her head) I have failed you Aladin, I am not worthy to be called ‘mother’. The Emperor and his Advisor took the jewels – ‘as a sign of intent’ they said! ALADIN They thought they were stolen I’ll bet! So the Emperor won’t accept me as a suitor? MOTHER (taking out the Emperor’s list) Oh yes he will – if you can supply what’s on his shopping list by the Night of the Dancing Dragons. 20 ALADIN But that’s tonight! (Takes the list) What does he want? I’ve got some good friends and I’ve started dealing with the merchants now. (Reads from list) Pearls! Rare spices and incense, gold, furs, Phoenician glass! (In despair) They jest with us mother. What am I to do? Yasmina has sent away all her suitors, (in horror) she will have to marry that villain Soh Mein! My high hopes crashing down around me. ENTER – Aladin backers, side entrance MOTHER The children will lighten your heart son. MUSIC – ‘High Hopes’ DANCE – Street Children start it off, Aladin bows his head to think, notices a small ant on the floor and takes over the dance, backed by the children. Whenever ‘oops there goes another rubber tree plant’ is sung, one of the plants at the back falls over. EXIT – side entrance, Street Children, waving MOTHER (nodding briskly) We can do it! (Gathers up the dishes) I’ll start by selling these. Any trader who tries to cheat me will feel the sharp edge of my mother’s fan across his ear. You think of a plan and listen out for an old pedlar – he’s giving two lamps for the price of one. (Indicates the lamp) Polish up that old thing. Mother EXITS curtain end with dishes. Aladin picks up the lamp. ALADIN The lamp from the treasure cave! If I could get back down there …. (He begins to polish the lamp). MUSIC – ‘A friend like me’ ENTER curtain end, sound/lighting effect – The Genie DANCE – for Genie GENIE (voice deep, American south) ‘am at your service Sir. ALADIN (astonished, putting the lamp on the table) Are you the Slave of the lamp? GENIE (affronted) A Slave – me a Slave! No Sir – ‘am the one without the conscience. Why you can have the whole world in a paper bag if you wan’ it. ALADIN Well let’s start with the easy stuff (reads from the list), like: Pearls the size of chickens eggs, rare Indian spices and incense, Egyptian gold ornaments, finest African furs and best Phoenician glass? 21 GENIE No probs. It’s a dowry ain’t it. Better getcha a new waistcoat if you’s a goin’ a courtin’. I’m gonna make you a new man Sir – ma new Master’s gonna be Prince Ali aka Ala alDin. MUSIC – ‘Prince Ali’ ENTER – side entrance– Servant with jeweled waistcoat and turban for Aladin which he puts on (this Servant then exits so that he can re-appear at the end of the line). The Genie then leads, Aladin follows and Servants ENTER from side entrance, carrying all the things on the Emperor’s shopping list As this procession circuits the rink, it is joined by the Street Children and the Peasants who ENTER from zamboni end, both sides and curtain end, both sides, as the group passes. EXIT – zamboni end as the music dies away – everyone. As the procession exits ENTER side entrance –Sorcerer, dressed as pedlar ENTER zamboni end – Mother They meet in the middle looking towards the place where the procession disappeared. MOTHER (to Sorcerer) Such excitement! (Proudly - fanning her face) That was my son, going to wed the Princess he is. I knew he’d think of something, such a resourceful boy, but loyal and honourable, as I hope I am. I returned just to make sure you got the opportunity to give me two new lamps for one old one. (Goes to table to get the lamp) Here, Aladin should have cleaned it for you, but he was too busy getting a dowry together I suppose. (Breathes on the lamp and picks up the corner of her dress) I’ll just give it a ….. .(Sorcerer snatches it from her hand). SORCERER (throwing off his pedlar’s cloak) No need Madam! The rest of my life will be devoted to polishing it. Go tell your (scathing) ‘honourable son’ that I have it and next I will have Yasmina. (Gives dazed Mother a push in the direction of the curtain end) Hurry woman! The cloak of night begins to fall. The Dancing Dragons will soon take to the streets and impede your progress. EXIT side – Sorcerer laughing Mother picks up his cloak, stands head bowed as the lights dim, EXITS curtain end. SET – Close curtains, remove kitchen props – next backdrop needed is the Desert one (scene 10). 22 SCENE 9 – THE NIGHT OF THE DANCING DRAGONS SET - Curtain as back drop – UV scene MUSIC – faint in background for furniture moving and Dragons set up – ‘Prince Ali’ NARRATOR (voice off – over music) Let the dancing dragons celebrate the betrothal of Princess Yasmina to our new Prince Ali Ala al-Din MUSIC – ‘The Dragon’ ENTER - side curtains – Firework girls ENTER – centre curtain Dragon 1 ENTER – centre curtain Dragon 2 DANCE – for Dragons EXIT - centre curtain Dragon 1 EXIT – centre curtain Dragon 2 EXIT – centre curtain Firework girls UV finishes, lights up ENTER zamboni end – Emperor, Empress, Advisor and Aladin EMPEROR (as they enter) Welcome to the family, I cannot deny your magnificent dowry will make a difference to our lives. ADVISOR (ingratiatingly and excitedly) Yes indeed. I have planned a new pavilion for the palace grounds and if we acquire more land from the peasants we can install our own hot baths and spa. ALADIN (to Emperor) A great Emperor, your eminence, is judged by the health and happiness of his people – not by the grandeur of his dwelling nor the excesses of his lifestyle. EMPEROR (looks taken aback and thoughtful) Well spoken Prince Ali – forgive me, I have grown thoughtless with age. You will rule well with my daughter Yasmina, she also has a kind heart and a wise head. (Turns to Advisor) Soh Mein, we must look closely at the provision we make for our people. Our palace lands grow at the same rate as our queues of petitioners! (Advisor looks shamefaced) EMPEROR (turning back to Aladin) Now Aladin, I may call you Aladin ? (Aladin smiles and nods in assent) My daughter should be here at any time and ….. (interrupted by the entrance of a frantic Leila). 23 LEILA (bowing to the Emperor and Aladin) Oh great Emperor and Prince Ali, the Princess is gone! A great black cloud descended and when it cleared the Princess was no longer with us. ADVISOR (triumphantly to the Emperor) I told you there was sorcery in all this when that dowry arrived! Arrest this trickster! EMPEROR (to Aladin) This is not your doing Aladin? ALADIN (shocked) Indeed not Sir – you must trust me. ADVISOR You lie! EMPEROR No! You saw the crowds cheering him to the palace - my people trust him and so do I. But Aladin, can you find my daughter and return her home before the New Year celebrations and your wedding? ALADIN I can. But leave me – I have to think. The Emperor pats Aladin’s shoulder before he sadly EXITS, centre curtain, with the Advisor, Empress and Leila. ENTER running, zamboni end, as the others go – Mother MOTHER Oh Aladin! That treacherous, slimy slug who professed to be the brother of my dearest Mustapha is back. He has taken that old lamp, seemed to set great store by it, he said to tell you that he would take Yasmina from you. I tried to get here sooner but the streets were full of dancing dragons. Aladin, what will we do? ALADIN (calmly) Don’t worry mother. Go home and make me some of that remedy you give to the mothers of troubled babies, the ones whose teeth stop them sleeping. MOTHER (goes to embrace him) My poor boy – all these troubles and you have an aching tooth – come to mother. ALADIN (fending her off) I’m fine mother – it is not for me – make me a small phial fifty – no a hundred times more powerful than you would for the babies. Go quickly – I will collect it. EXIT zamboni end – Mother shaking her head and shrugging in puzzlement ALADIN Now, with a little help from the Slave of the Ring (rubs the ring) … 24 Sound/lighting effect ENTER - centre curtain – Slave of the Ring SLAVE Your wish, Master? ALADIN I am going to rescue the Princess Yasmina from the Sorcerer. But I need to know where she is and how to get there. It is a wish for everyone who loves the Princess. SLAVE My conscience is satisfied. The Princess is imprisoned in the Sorcerer’s new castle, in Cairo. Carpet is the best form of transport – preferred colour? ALADIN (puzzled) Er – whatever you like. SLAVE (puts fingertips to head) I’ll just wish it Sound and light effect – magic carpet appears from curtain end. ALADIN (inspecting it in delight) That’s unbelievable! SLAVE On you get. Just tell it where to go. It can reach a thousand knots a metre, but sorry, no seat belts, so hang on to your turban – sick bags under front off side corner. Good luck! ALADIN (waving) Thank you – I’ll be in touch. EXIT curtain end with a flash – Slave ALADIN (climbing on to the carpet) Now carpet, to my home first, I have something to collect. Then, on to Cairo and the Sorcerer’s castle! Sound and light effect for carpet EXIT curtain end – Aladin and carpet 25 SCENE 10 – A HAPPY NEW YEAR SET – A room in the castle of the Sorcerer. Desert backdrop with curtains opened only enough to make the backdrop look like a view from a window. Needs the divan, a table, a tray with goblets and a bottle of wine, could also use the plants from Aladin’s house. ENTER – side entrance – Yasmina walking sadly MUSIC – ‘On my own’ DANCE – for Yasmina Sound of knocking from the window ALADIN (voice off – stage whisper – Aladin is wearing a sword) Yasmina let me in! YASMINA (looking around in disbelief) Aladin?! Where are you? ALADIN Outside the window! Yasmina crosses to the curtain, pulls it aside, ‘opens the window’ and helps him in. YASMINA How did you reach me? This tower is so high, no one could climb it. ALADIN A friendly carpet, I’ll introduce you later. (Taking her hand and looking at her) Has that wicked Sorcerer harmed you? YASMINA No, but let us escape quickly, he comes every evening at six – to woo me he says, I have to eat and drink with him. (Shudders) He’s really creepy Aladin. (Goes to pull him to the window) Come, show me this carpet, then we must go! ALADIN No, we have to be free of him forever – I’ll have to face him. YASMINA But his magic is so strong – you stand no chance. ALADIN Tell me – have you ever seen him with an old lamp? YASMINA Why yes, how strange you should ask – he carries it with him always. 26 ALADIN Then we do have a chance, but I’ll need your help (takes out the phial and shows it to Yasmina) When he comes, could you tip this into his wine? Clock strikes six, Yasmina and Aladin start and look towards the door (zamboni end), Yasmina takes the phial and hides it on her person. SORCERER (smarmy voice off) Yasmina, fair flower of the East – I am coming to woo you. Yasmina pushes Aladin behind the curtain, arranging it so that he is hidden. Sound of a key grating in a lock. ENTER - zamboni end – Sorcerer – he has the lamp tied to his belt SORCERER (shivering and looking around suspiciously) I thought I heard voices. YASMINA Perhaps you heard my prayers my Lord. SORCERER Mmm – but it is cold in here my delicate blossom. (Notices the open window, speaks sharply) The window is open – why would that be? YASMINA (quickly crossing to shut the window) I needed the freshness of the evening air my Lord. Your visits make my heart pound and my temperature rise. SORCERER (smugly as he goes to caress her) I affect you so my sweet Princess? YASMINA (moving away and going towards the divan) All day you have been studying your magic arts Sir, – come, rest here (indicates divan) while I pour your wine Yasmina goes to the table to pour the wine, she adds the contents of the phial, Aladin peeps out and gives her the ‘thumbs up’ and the Sorcerer goes to recline on the divan. SORCERER (stretching out luxuriously) Yasmina, I think you soften towards me a little. YASMINA (giving him his wine) Perhaps we should drink to our future my Lord. SORCERER (downing the drink and handing her the goblet – shakes his head to clear his vision, speaks drowsily) That wine was even better than I remember (yawns) it takes me back to my childhood. (Head drops and he sleeps). 27 Yasmina returns the goblet to the table as Aladin comes out from behind the curtain. They creep across to look at the Sorcerer – he lets out a great snore and they jump back. YASMINA (awed whisper) He sleeps like a baby. ALADIN It’s a teething remedy – adapted for Sorcerers of course. (Draws his sword) Now I must kill him. (Raises sword) YASMINA (moving rapidly away and covering her eyes) I’ll wait over here. Aladin has a few false tries then puts his sword on the table. ALADIN It doesn’t seem right to kill a sleeping man. YASMINA But if he wakes he can magic you away with a click of his fingers. ALADIN I know – but it’s my conscience. (Has an idea) I’ll ask the Slave of the Ring – she understands consciences – she’ll say what’s right. I’ll ask the Genie as well – he has no conscience, but he might have a good idea. Aladin carefully takes the lamp from the Sorcerer’s belt then he rubs the ring. Sound/lighting effect ENTER curtain end – Slave of the Ring who bows Aladin rubs the lamp ENTER curtain end with sound/lighting effect– Genie The Slave of the Ring and the Genie salaam to one another ALADIN I need guidance friends. I have to rid myself of this Sorcerer (points to him). I cannot kill a sleeping man – but if he wakes I stand no chance. SLAVE Then we must find a fate worse than death – (thinking) mmm – to lose those he loves perhaps? ALADIN - and if he loves no one but himself? SLAVE Then logically he must lose himself - (pondering) but how? ALADIN (turning to the Genie) Genie what do you think is the worst fate to befall a man? 28 GENIE Why, havin’ to be a Genie of course. Livin’ in a poky little lamp and granting wishes to whoever owns ya! You have the power – but what’s power without freedom? When I was made a Genie I lost mah true self. SORCERER – (makes ‘coming round’ noises) YASMINA (agitated) He’s waking up! Aladin puts the lamp on the floor by the divan, in easy reach of the Sorcerer. YASMINA (goes to get it) No Aladin – he’ll get it! ALADIN Leave it Yasmina, turn away from him as he wakes. The Sorcerer opens his eyes and looks at them then he sees the lamp and, thinking that they are unaware of him, slowly reaches down to get it SORCERER (snatching the lamp, leaping up and roaring) Trickery and treachery – but I will not be beaten (waves the lamp), I have the lamp, the Genie will obey me! ALADIN (calmly) And what will you ask of him Sorcerer? SORCERER Power! To be the most powerful sorcerer in the world ALADIN Yes - and the all powerful Genie will grant your wish – for he alone (points to the Genie) possesses supreme power. SORCERER (pauses to think – then speaks slowly) How clever of you Aladin – you are right – supreme power belongs only to the Genie. So that’s what I want – to be the Genie. (Turns to Genie) Genie I wish to take your place. GENIE (delighted) Your wish is mah command Sir – (punches the air with his fist) mah last command! SORCERER (shrieks and doubles up – makes towards the back) Aah! I’m shrinking! Sound effects – flashing lights The others hurry over to him and stand around him so that he is able to disappear under or behind the curtain. 29 GENIE Why you gotta fit into your little, oil lamp pad Sir. ALADIN (picking up the lamp and calling down the spout) You in there Genie? SORCERER (doleful voice from oil lamp) You want me Master? ALADIN Not just yet – the carpet will get us home. Curl up and rest till I call on you. SORCERER groans YASMINA (taking the lamp and inspecting it) Oh he may as well be of some use Aladin. Genie ? – or have you proper name? GENIE Just call me ‘You Genius’. YASMINA You Genius, does this lamp really work? Can we light it to guide us home? GENIE Sure can ma’am. Gets a little hot in there but it works mighty fine. YASMINA Then let’s do it. MUSIC – ‘Light your Lamp’ DANCE – Aladin, Yasmina, Genie, Slave of the Ring During the dance the carpet comes on and as many as it will hold get on it and EXIT, curtain end, at the end of the music. SET – Close curtain. Move props and change to Lantern Ballroom backdrop. MUSIC – faint in background ‘The Tao of Love’ NARRATOR (off ice) Let us celebrate, on this first day of the first moon, the New Year and the wedding of the Princess Yasmina to Prince Ali Ala al-Din! SET – Open curtain to Lantern Ballroom backdrop MUSIC – ‘The Sabre Dance’ ENTER – Sabre Dancers, curtain/first aid side and zamboni entrance DANCE – Sabre Dancers When the dance is finished they stand at the back (not blocking centre) ENTER – centre gap – Kung Fu fighters MUSIC – ‘Kung Fu fighting’ DANCE – Kung Fu fighters 30 When the dance is finished they stand in front of Sabre Dancers (not blocking centre) MUSIC – ‘China Tea’ ENTER zamboni end, both sides – Ladies in waiting with parasols DANCE – Ladies in waiting ENTER – Chinese Signs, centre gap DANCE – Chinese Signs and line up in front of Kung Fu Fighters ENTER - centre gap Dragon1 ENTER – Street Children, zamboni end, both sides. Line up in front of Chinese Signs EXIT – Dragon 1 ENTER - Dance Club and stand at the back (not blocking centre) ENTER – Dragon Dancers As the music finishes they all move to the back (not blocking centre) NARRATOR (off ice) Let us share the moment when Our Aladdin pledges his love. MUSIC – ‘Evergreen’ ENTER curtain end, centre gap – Aladdin followed by Emperor, Empress and Mother arm in arm, followed by the Advisor held firmly between the Genie and the Slave of the Ring, Incubus with Camela who is wearing a garland for the occasion. This group line up at the front of cast keeping centre gap. DANCE – Aladdin with rest of cast backing As the dance finishes everyone makes sure that there is room for the carpet to enter. MUSIC – Faintly then louder as carpet bearing Yasmina enters -‘Whole new world’ – instrumental NARRATOR (off ice as carpet moves to the front) Cheers for the Royal Couple – our own Princess Yasmina and Aladin! Aladin helps Yasmina off, carpet backs off and they wave it goodbye. MUSIC – ‘Whole new world’- vocal DANCE for Yasmina and Aladin with cast backing ALADIN Now one last wish for everyone ….
