New Jersey (Atlantic City) – Joe Weinert - Caesars
Atlantic City eliminated 80 table-games jobs, the result of
lost business to the new Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa. "In
response to competitive conditions in the Atlantic City
marketplace, Park Place Entertainment is re-evaluating
staffing levels across its Atlantic City properties,"

Borgata to keep ‘Pimp’n’Ho’ clean
New Jersey (Atlantic City) – Joe Weinert - State gaming
rules explicitly - and we mean explicitly - prohibit casino
entertainment that includes actual or simulated sex acts
and the exposure of six very private anatomical areas.
With that in mind, Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa tonight
will throw an X-rated "Pimp'n'Ho Halloween Party" for
the public that promises flesh and fantasy. "The Double
X-Rated party you've been waiting for," Borgata boasts.
"Dress as a pimp, ho, or anything else in between."
Joseph Corbo, Borgata's general counsel, said the casino
is guilty of marketing hyperbole, not of violating gaming
regulations.

Meeker blames account wagering, casinos
for Hollywood revenue decline
California (racing) - Though Hollywood Park was
Churchill Downs Inc.’s second-biggest earner during the
nine-month period ended September 30, 2003, company
President Tom Meeker said during an analyst conference
call last week that the Inglewood, California, racetrack
"continues to underperform." Net revenues in the
company during the first nine months of 2003 dropped
3.2% from $67.16-million last year to $65.011-million
this year. The company suffered a 12.5% drop during the
third quarter, from $18.674-million last year to $16.34million this year. "Several factors seem to be involved at
Hollywood Park," Meeker said. "First, the growth of
TVG account wagering seems to be pulling fans away
from the racetrack. "Clearly, increased competition by
Native American casinos hurts Hollywood Park and all of
California racing," Meeker continued.

Antioch rejects gaming proposal
California (Indian gaming) - Jane Ramsey - With a
unanimous vote, the Antioch City Council on Wednesday
night rejected a proposed casino project that had ignited
fierce opposition from residents and nonresidents. With
its vote, the council also rejected putting the proposal of
Indian gaming as an advisory measure on the March
ballot. Emotions ran high as hundreds packed Antioch
High School's Beede Auditorium to oppose further
negotiations between Antioch city officials and delegates
of the Guidiville Band of Pomo Indians. …"We're
obviously disappointed. It's one of the better sites in the
Bay Area," said John Troughton, the tribe's Cushman &
Wakefield broker. Troughton remained confident that the
tribe would find another site. "The sites come to us," he
said.

six Va. tribes
National (recognition) - Associated Press - A Senate
committee has endorsed legislation awarding
sovereign status to six American Indian tribes in
Virginia. The Indian Affairs Committee sent Sen.
George Allen's bill to the full Senate on Wednesday.
The six tribes have about 3,000 members. "I think
this is a big day," said Chief Kenneth F. Adams of
the Upper Mattaponi tribe. "These 3,000 people that
have really been so mistreated by Virginia — to
have the state stand behind us and support this bill,
it's big for us." More than 560 tribes nationwide

£30m deal for Rank's slot machine arm
International (UK) – The Yorkshire company once
known as Kunick has bought the slot-machine business of
leisure giant Rank for £30m. Leeds-based Danoptra
Holdings, the name adopted by the management of
Kunick after they took the business private, leaving the
Stock Exchange in June last year, said the deal for Rank
Leisure Machine Services would increase its games
machine business by 50 per cent. Danoptra has two
businesses, slot-machine operation Gamestec, and
Leisure Connection, which manages local authority
leisure centres as well as national sports operations such
as the National Watersports Centre in Nottingham and the
national sports injury clinic at Lilleshall. Colin Daniels,
chief executive of Danoptra, said that the acquisition of
4
the Rank business, which made an operating profit of
£3.1m on turnover of £50m last year, would cement its
position as the second biggest games machine operator in
the UK. Gamestec, which had a turnover of £80m before
the acquisition, is second to Leisurelink, with almost
40,000 machines in the UK.
The Rank business, which has assets of £28.1m, employs
800 people.
