However, as Mr Khaw was unable to turn up for the dinner, it was changed to an Informal dinner for our members with a short tribute to the late Dr Chee Phui Hung, who passed away peacefully at his home on February 14th 2010. 3.8 About 80 members attended the informal dinner and tribute. As the time was very short for the arrangement of the dinner and tribute, not many members were informed. Only those who had originally agreed to turn up at the Yu-Sheng dinner was informed of the change of agenda. The Management Committee apologizes for failure to inform all members in time about this event due to the suddenness of Dr Chee’s passing. The Management Committee is planning a publication to commemorate the late Dr Chee Phui Hung. We are inviting all our members to send in any comment or article on the late Dr Chee Phui Hung for this publication. Dr Lim Kuang Hui is the Editor for this publication. The Management Committee thanked both Prof Arthur Lim and Mr Koe Khoon Poh for sponsoring the dinner. d) New Alumni Office at Shaw Foundation Alumni House 3.9 Members are welcome to use the facilities at the “Alumni Service Centre” on the ground floor of the Shaw Foundation House at Kent Ridge. The Office of the Alumni Relations intended to re-plan the office layout of the spaces allocated to the medical alumni and the other 43 alumni bodies to encourage more interactive socializing amongst the group. The open concept plan for all the alumni bodies would do away with any staff for the centre. This plan suits the medical alumni very well as we are already under staff at the Alumni Medical Centre at College Road. 4.0 Sub-Committee Reports a) Renovation Committee Chairman: Committee: 4.1 A/Prof Wong Sze Tai Mr Hoong Bee Lok Mrs Xandra Thean The Executive Room : The Committee is still in the process of procuring furniture for the Room. The room could be used for private dining and meeting. 3 4.2 Members Lift: The project was awarded to AutoPark Engineering & Trading Pte Ltd. The project included the renovation of three toilets; two toilets on level 1 and the Gents’ toilet at the swimming pool deck to make room for the lift shaft from ground floor to level 1. A ramp for the disabled was constructed from the car park at the front entrance gate from the swimming pool deck to the lobby on the ground floor. The lift is in service now. The Management Committee wishes to put on record their appreciation to Dr Della Lee for her generous donation of $150,000.00 to fund the project. The Committee thanked Dr Jeffrey Seow for looking after the project. b) Car Park Chairman: Member: Prof Loh Hong Sai Dr Bertrand Chew 4.3 The Car Park Sub-Committee has studied the various systems available and was in favour of the proposals by Wilson Parking (S) Pte Ltd, which is the main operator in SGH: System A is a manual system whereby our members have to slot in cash card at the points of entry and exit. System B is a semi-automatic, whereby our members slot in the cash card at the exit point only. In both proposals, there are possible incomes for the association from the fees collected. 4.4 The Car Park Sub-Committee postponed the signing of the contract with Wilson Parking for system B when complaints and enquiries were received from members after the official announcement in our newsletter. The matter was being put on hold while the Sub-Committee reconsider the suggestions and complaints of our members regarding the “gated car parking system”. 4.5 The Sub-Committee is now manually monitoring the parking situation and issuing warning tickets for recalcitrant non-members and clamping illegally parked cars as recommended by some of the members. 4.6 Meanwhile, the Association is re-arranging the current sign-posts concerning illegal parking to better locations, and ordering a large sign-board at the entrance to prevent such. c) Newsletter & Archives Sub-Committee Chairman: Member: 4.7 Dr Bertrand Chew Dr William Chew We have started a Newsletter for our members on a simple scale. This is a “home-made” version, printed by our own office at low cost. Members are invited to send in their contributions to the Editor for inclusion in our future publication of the Newsletter. We hope to grow from strength to strength with your increased interest and contribution in writings and support. 4 d) Games Sub-Committee Report Chairman: Member: 4.8 Dr Thean Tsin Piao Dr Robert Looi The Sub-Committee is looking into replacing 2 old machines which are not popular amongst the players. Our patronage remains small, and the only way to keep the interest going is to install new machines. e) Membership Sub-committee Chairman: Mr K P Koe Members: Prof HS Loh Dr J Y Lim 4.9 The Membership Sub-Committee was formed mainly for membership drive. The Committee was concerned that the membership count is dwindling. They hope to boost the membership with special promotional drive. The Committee proposed to print a brochure to introduce the Alumni Association showcasing its history, activities, achievements and well known personalities. The Committee had also encouraged all newly graduated medical, dental and pharmacy students to join the membership. These new graduates will be sponsored by a member. 4.10 13 new members joined after the initial stage of promotional drive. It’s a good start for the exercise. 4.11 Several comprehensive programme for the different age group have been planned to cater to the diverse needs of our members. Tours to Malacca and Hanoi were planned for March and May 2010 for members and their families, a party at Zouk and a year end count-down party were held for the young members. The Alumni Singing group has been set up to encourage participation from members and their families. The Christmas tree lighting up ceremony was also another family orientated programme for our members. 4.12 It is with much sadness that the Alumni Association has to record the passing on of a great son of the Alumni - the late Dr Chee Phui Hung on February 14th 2010. All that Dr Chee Phui Hung had ever fought for was always for the Alumni! Dr Chee Phui Hung is the Alumni. It was unfortunate that his passing on was on the first day of Lunar New Year. The office was not able to inform many of our members of his sudden departure as it happened during the long holiday break. Those members who would like to share their experiences with the “Agong” - Dr Chee, are requested to send in their writings, photographs or any memorabilia to the Alumni Association office before end of July 2010 to be included in a publication in memory of the late Dr Chee Phui Hung. 5 4.13 “Agong” has always been with the Alumni Association, and now that the “captain” is gone, we hope that the Alumni Association would still be charted on the right course henceforth by the “young blood”. The Alumni Association needs your support to work hand in hand as we sail into the unchartered waters – to build the Alumni into a bigger, better and stronger Association. Come forth therefore to pass the torch on! f) IT Sub-Committee: Chairman: Committee: Dr Dominic Leung Dr Thean Tsin Piao Dr Jeffrey Seow 4.14 The Committee continues to provide the guidance and consultation in IT application for the alumni office and organises video presentation for alumni functions. 4.15 Members are welcome to visit the Alumni Association www.medicalalumni.org.sg for announcement and information. web site: g) Karaoke & Dancing Sub-Committee Chairman: A/Prof Wong Sze Tai 4.16 The Sub-Committee upgraded the karaoke speaker’s system. The Karaoke Lounge is open to all members on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 7.00pm to 11.30pm at a charge of $7/-per member for the whole evening. Booking the Karaoke Lounge for private party is also available on Mondays, Wednesdays & Saturdays at a rate of $25/per hour with a minimum 2 hours booking with the Alumni office. The Karaoke lounge is normally quite packed on Tuesdays. Members who do not like crowd may like to turn up on Thursdays and Fridays. 4.17 Dr Wong Sin Hee has been assisting in organizing the dancing function for our alumni members. Recently, the Alumni dancing group has been combining with the Singapore Medical Association Sensory interest group for theme dancing functions. The various theme nights were “The Red & White August Ball, Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival Night, Back to the 60s – Ago-go night & Bollywood Night”. These theme functions were well attended. Dr PH Fong was tasked to form a singing group. This is a family orientated activity. Members and their family 6 members are welcome to join the singing group, which will be trained by a professional voice trainer. Participating members only need to pay a nominal fee for the training session. The main bulk of the cost will be subsidized by the Alumni Association. 4.19 This is a long term project. We hope to start off with a small group and have it grown as the years go by. i) Leisure: Tour Chairman: Dr Ng Boon Keng 4.20 The Management Committee has requested Dr BK Ng to look into group tours suitable for our members and their families to join. After going through several itineraries, 2 itineraries were found to be suitable for our members. There is one weekend tour to Malacca, and a 7 days tour to Hanoi. Both tours were circulated to members. However, the responses to both tours were not encouraging. j) Young Alumni Chapter Chairman: Dr Wong Keng Mun Member: Dr Alvin Lee 4.21 The Young Alumni Chapter organized a series of friendly Golf tournaments for our golfing members. The first game was played at Raffles Country Club on March 17th 2010. More than 20 members participated in this social game. The second game would be played at Marina Golf course on May 12th 2010. Prof Loh welcomed the members to the AGM. He invited the members to join him standing to pay respect to those members who had passed away last year. The late members were Dr Ho Yuen, Dr Phay Seng Whatt, Dr Siow Li Jin, Emeritus Prof Wong Hock Boon and Dr Yeoh Kean Hong. 1.1 The minutes of Annual General Meeting held on May 30th 2008 were adopted, proposed by Dr Aloysius Teo and seconded by Dr Jeffrey Seow. 13 2.0 Matters Arising 2.1 Referring to item 4.7, Dr PH Chee asked Prof HS Loh whether there is any progress in the membership recruitment of Duke NUS graduates and the graduate nurses. 2.2 Prof HS Loh explained that the Committee met and discussed the issue about incorporating the Duke NUS graduates and the graduate nurses into the membership. The issue was also discussed at the last Council meeting and there was a need to amend the constitution for this purpose. 2.3 Dr Chee felt that the problem could be the admittance of graduate nurses as they are not mentioned in the constitution. The Duke NUS is already part of the medical faculty. He urged Prof Loh to continue serving in the Committee to see through the process of this change. 2.4 Prof Loh assured Dr Chee that the in-coming Committee would look into the matter. 3.0 Annual Report 3.1 Dr PH Chee commented that the record on item 3.1 of the Annual Report was incomplete. He noted that only some guests were mentioned. He would like to propose that all the 3 VIP table guests to be included. 3.2 The other guests were Dr Andrew Chew, NUS Pro-Chancellor, Prof Lim Pin, University Professor NUS, Prof Tan Eng Chye, Deputy President & Provost NUS, A/Prof Teo Choo Soo, Director Office of Alumni Relations, Mr Joseph Mullinix, Deputy President (Administrative) NUS, Mr Wong Ah Long, NUSS Alumni Advisory Board, Dr Chew Chin Hin, Advisor School of Postgraduate Medical Studies, Dr Tan Peng Guan, Chairman NUS Alumni Chapter (London) and Mr Bernard Toh, Director Projects & Communication Office of President NUS. 3.3 Dr PH Chee asked the Committee on the purpose of posting one staff from the Alumni Association office to help man the Alumni Service Centre at the New Shaw Foundation Alumni House. He said that the Alumni Association should be helped out by the OAR not the reverse. 3.4 Prof Loh explained that the assistance was rendered to the OAR office temporarily to help them launch the Service Centre on April 1st 2009. The NUSS and the Business School are also posting staff there to help man the Service Centre. The Management Committee would be reviewing the situation as it is only a temporary arrangement. 3.5 Prof Loh expressed his appreciation to Lee Foundation and Dr Susan Lim for their generous donation in supporting the Inaugural NUS Alumni Art Show staged from March 27th – April 24th 2009. 14 3.6 Prof Loh invited members to use the Theatrette which was converted from the previous YACAA room and he wished to formally acknowledged the contribution and support by Dr Lo Hong Ling who is Patron of the Young Alumni Chapter Alumni Association (YACAA). The Committee had sought his understanding for the conversion of the room into the state-of-the-Art Theatrette. Members were also invited to use the Executive Room, which was converted from the previous Cyber Room. Prof Loh also thanked Dr Allan Ng for his previous contribution as well. The Executive Room could be used for meeting and dining. 3.7 Dr PH Chee asked the Committee to review the construction of the lift. He felt that the amount of money involved in constructing the lift is not justified, as our lease has less than ten years or so left. Furthermore, he felt that the lift would be used more by the members of the sister’s organizations than the Alumni Association. He expressed that the expenses should be shared by the 4 bodies instead of the Alumni Association bearing it alone. 3.8 Prof Loh replied that the proposal to construct the lift was made before his term and it would be financed wholly by an external source. (Afternote: The fundings came from D.S. Lee Foundation) 3.9 Prof Loh elaborated on the proposed “gated car park” project which the Committee had been exploring. There were complaints about car park facility being abused by nonmembers etc. Thus acting on the complaints the Committee would like the House to support the proposal. 3.10 Dr PH Chee enquired about the set up of the car park equipment and maintenance cost. Dr Chee was informed that the car park would be managed by Wilson Car Park Management Pte Ltd. 3.11 Dr KP Wong raised the concern that the “gated car park” should be free and not be of inconvenience to the members. 3.12 Prof Loh enlightened the House that the “gated car park” system to be manned by Wilson Car Park Pte Ltd for a 3 years contract. There would be no capital involvement from our side. The equipment cost and maintenance would be borne by Wilson. The Management Committee would be negotiating for free parking for Alumni members. If there is no objection from the House, the Committee would explore further. The rates would be the same as those charged by the car parks around Singapore General Hospital. 3.13 The House gave the Committee the mandate to go ahead with the implementation of the “gated car park” system to control the car parking problem at the centre. 15 3.14 Referring to item 4.12, Dr PH Chee asked about the management of the website. Dr Dominic Leung replied that the committee has outsourced to an external web master, and there is much freedom with our own website. Previously, we ride on the OAR website, however, there are many restrictions imposed on us. Dr Thean explained that the initial setup cost was $740/- and the annual subscription was only $240/-. The website is accessible to all members all over the world. It is a focal point for everyone. The web address is www.medicalalumni.org.sg . 3.15 Prof Loh invited Dr JY Lim and Mr Mark Tan to introduce themselves to the House and elaborated on the mission of the Students Chapter and their programme for this year. 3.16 Prof Arthur Lim thanked the two young leaders and hoped that the Alumni membership would be boosted by the new addition of these young members.
